We are hiring - Culture Coordinator

The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo is now hiring a Culture Coordinator. This is a relief position for approximately nine (9) months working thirty-five (35) hours per week in the Community Strategies Branch of the Community Services Department.

Position Description:
Under the general supervision, is responsible for enabling citizens and user groups to develop community programs, projects and events, to deal with issues, operate facilities, and establish systems to empower them to take ownership. Areas of focus to include: culture, arts, recreation, youth, organizational development, and administration of special events and programs.

- Degree in Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts (Anthropology, Museum Studies, Art History, Arts Administration, Tourism)
- Diploma in Arts, Culture, Tourism, or related discipline from a recognized institution, with two (2) years related work experience.
- Event and volunteer management, and budget control experience is preferred.

Learning Through the Arts seeks Fort McMurray Artists!

What is LTTA?
Learning Through the Arts is an arts education program that infuses art into curriculum. We train artists to become artist-educators: artists who can partner with teachers in the classroom to teach Language Arts, Science, Social Studies or Math. A division of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, we've been in existence for 17 years. 

- We believe that artists, through their artform, can change the way school happens. Our goal is to engage and empower the youth in Fort McMurray's schools. 
- We work with sculptors, dancers, painters, writers, drama/theater artists, jewelry designers, First Nations cultural artists, musicians, singers, filmmakers, and photographers, hip hop dancers, dj specialists, and more!

- We provide FREE training in Fort McMurray for any artists who are interested in working in the classroom. 
- Any time you spend in a classroom with us is paid work- from observing to working in partnership with a teacher. 
- We have an extensive mentorship program and we do our very best to help all artist-educators experience success. 
- We're working with every school in the Fort McMurray Catholic School District and many of the Fort McMurray Public schools. 
- We can provide part-time to full-time work for artists in schools.

Alberta Dance Festival 2013

The Alberta Dance Educators' Association hosts, organizes and produces the Alberta Dance Festival. This event attracts over 4,000 students of dance to the Myer Horowitz Theatre on the University of Alberta campus in Edmonton in May. Dancers vie for medals and scholarships in categories of classical/character ballet, tap, jazz national and musical theatre.

The Alberta Dance Festival has grown to be the largest dance festival in Western Canada and perhaps all of Canada. Adjudicators are drawn from Canadian and American dance masters, teachers or performers.

The Alberta Dance Festival has been held annually since 1976. It is one of the largest festivals, attracting more than 4,000 dancers from across Western Canada.

The Festival provides an opportunity for dancers to perform in a non-competitive atmosphere. Medals are awarded using a standard marking system and over $20,000 in cash scholarships are given away each year. The festival is open to participants ages six years and up in the disciplines of Tap, Musical Theater, Stage/Novelty, Jazz, Hip-Hop, Lyrical, Ballet, Modern & contemporary.

Alberta Dance Festival 2013
This year’s Festival will take place at the Myer Horowitz Theater, located on the University of Alberta Campus in Edmonton, Alberta. Admission to the Festival is free of charge for all events.

Travel Grants to Professionals in the Visual Arts - Canada Council for the Arts

Program Description
The Travel Grants to Professionals in the Visual Arts program provides assistance to professional visual and fine craft artists, independent critics and curators, and architecture professionals. The grants are for travel to attend or participate in activities related to their practice, whether in Canada or abroad.

Visual and fine craft artists may apply for either travel for exhibition OR travel to artists’ residency.

Independent critics and curators, and architecture professionals may apply for either travel for presentation OR travel for research.

Applicant Eligibility
Note that meeting the eligibility criteria does not guarantee that you will receive a grant.

General Eligibility Criteria
To apply to the Canada Council for the Arts, you must be a Canadian citizen or have permanent resident status, as defined by Citizenship and Immigration Canada. You do not need to be living in Canada when you apply.

Only individuals can apply to this program. If you are travelling as part of a group or collaboration, each member must apply separately.

You must meet the Canada Council’s definition of a professional artist, defined as someone who:
·        has specialized training in the artistic field (not necessarily in academic institutions)
·        is recognized as a professional by his or her peers (artists working in the same artistic tradition), and
·        is committed to devoting more time to artistic activity, if possible financially
·        Visual and fine craft artists, independent critics and curators, and architecture professionals must also have:
·        produced an independent body of work, and
·        maintained an independent professional practice for at least three years following the completion of specialized training in the field.

Specific Eligibility Criteria
In addition to meeting the general eligibility criteria outlined above, you must have a history of public presentation or publication. This is defined as follows:
·        Visual and fine craft artists
·        You must have had at least three exhibitions of your work in a professional visual arts or fine craft context, over a three-year period.
·        Independent critics and curators
·        Critics: You must have had at least three independent critical texts or reviews published in a professional context, over a three-year period.
·        Curators: You must have created at least three independent public exhibition/presentations and have had three independent critical texts or reviews published in a professional context, over a three-year period.
·        Architecture professionals
·        Practitioners of architecture (architect, landscape architect, or architectural or urban designer): You must have had at least three published articles, publications, exhibitions or other public presentations of your works of architecture in a professional context.
·        Critics and curators of architecture: You must have had at least three published articles, publications, exhibitions, or other public presentations on works of architecture in a professional context.

Project Eligibility
This program covers the following types of travel:
·        Visual and fine craft artists
·        Travel for exhibition: Travel to attend an exhibition of your artworks. Travel must be in response to an invitation by a professional visual arts or fine craft organization, or in another context where your work is recognized by a professional curator, gallery director or art dealer.
·        Travel to artists’ residency: Travel to participate in a professional artists’ residency. Participants must be chosen through a selection process.  The host organization must offer support in the form of a confirmed grant or honorarium, or contribution towards accommodations.
·        Independent critics and curators, and architecture professionals
·        Travel for presentation: Travel to attend a public presentation of your work at a professional venue or to present at a conference or symposium. The travel must be in response to an invitation from a professional organization.
·        Travel for research: Travel to undertake professional activities, such as studio visits or site visits related to a specific research project.

Grant Amount
Grants are available in fixed amounts ($500, $750, $1,000, $1,500, $2,000 or $2,500). The amounts of $2,000 and $2,500 are usually reserved for travel to or from Northern or remote parts of Canada, or international destinations other than the United States and Europe.

Alberta Historical Resources Foundation Heritage Awards 2012

The Alberta Historical Resources Foundation's Heritage Awards Program recognizes significant contributions of individuals, teams, organizations, corporations, congregations, institutions, municipalities, First Nations and Metis Settlements to the protection, preservation and promotion of Alberta's heritage. Heritage awards are presented every two years.

In 2012, the AHRF Award winners were honoured at a celebration held on Friday, November 30 at the McKay Avenue School in Edmonton.

The 2012 award winners were:

Kermith Anderson of Scandia, Judith Ann (Miller) Carleton of Blackfalds and Jack Manson of Thorsby were presented with Outstanding Achievement Awards

Catherine Cole of Edmonton received the Heritage Awareness Award.

Heritage Conservation Awards were presented to the Town of High River, the Lacombe and District Historical Society and the Arts and Heritage Foundation of St. Albert.

The City of Lacombe was also recognized for work on the city’s multi-phased Heritage Management Program with the presentation of the Municipal Heritage Preservation Award.

Heritage Conservation Award
Projects nominated in this category are those that demonstrate sustained commitment and outstanding contribution to the conservation of historic places in Alberta. This award recognizes excellence in the preservation, restoration or rehabilitation of a historic place having local, regional or provincial significance as well as excellence in architecture, engineering or craftsmanship.

Heritage Awareness Award
Projects nominated in this category have made outstanding contributions to local, regional or provincial history through: innovative programs that educate, interpret or promote public awareness of Alberta's history excellence in research, writing or publishing

Municipal Heritage Preservation Award
This award recognizes a municipal government which has demonstrated exemplary commitment to heritage conservation through its identification, protection and promotion of municipal historic resources.
Outstanding Achievement Award
This award recognizes an individual's exemplary and long-term leadership and contribution to the preservation and presentation of Alberta's history. Nominees should have a minimum of 10 years involvement with heritage in the province and have made personal contributions to the field well beyond the responsibilities of any heritage related employment. Their efforts to preserve, promote, interpret or otherwise encourage heritage preservation and awareness should demonstrate either exceptional diversity or high achievement. Achievements must be identifiable as provincial in scope and have resulted to improved public understanding and appreciation of Alberta's heritage

Open Call for Original 2D Artworks!

The MacDonald Island Community Art Gallery presented by Kirschner Family Corporation will be hosting a group exhibit for the month of February 2013 with the title, About Sports This group exhibit will feature two dimensional artworks that explore the theme of Sports in any interpretation or conceptual connection.


There is no exhibition fee for the About Sport exhibit. All two dimensional mediums, sizes and styles are welcomed.


The applications must be received electronically by January 23, 2013 send to

2. All pieces must be original, not copies or prints are allow

3. All artwork must be dry and ready to hang (wire setting 1/3 from the top of the artwork).

January 24, 2013 - Artists will be notified by e-mail of selection to exhibit.

1. It is the artists’ choice to list a piece of artwork for sale, or not. The price and all arrangements for the sale must be managed by the artist.

2. Artists are responsible for making arrangements to drop-off and pick-up their artwork at the designated times and place. Because the gallery has no storage space, artwork cannot be stored.

3. Any artwork not claimed by the artist by the designated time, or alternate time arranged in advance with the MacDonald Island Community Art Gallery, will be deemed donated to our annual charity sale – with all proceeds going to a designated charity or non-profit organization.


Basis security measures are in place (periodic patrols by guards, security cameras, safety hooks), but exhibits will NOT be supervised at all times. The gallery is located in a public facility and is a designated fire escape route. The gallery is equipped with sprinklers. All possible care will be taken to keep artwork in the same condition as it was when delivered to the gallery, but neither MacDonald Island Park nor MacDonald Island Community Art Gallery can guarantee this and cannot accept liability for loss or damage to artwork. Each artist will be required to sign a waiver in order to exhibit their work in the gallery. Each artist is responsible for securing INSURANCE for their artwork.

Community Spirit Program (CSP) Application Deadline December 31, 2012

The Community Spirit Program (CSP) donation grant application deadline is December 31, 2012.

The donation grant provides an opportunity for eligible non-profit and/or charitable organizations to receive a provincial grant. The grant is based on total annual cash donations from individual Albertans that have been received by an eligible organization over a 12-month fiscal period. The grant can be used to support an organization's operations, programs and/or capital projects. The maximum grant available is $25,000 up to a maximum of $50,000 over three years. A minimum total of $1,000 in eligible cash donations needs to be received prior to applying for a grant.

Eligible non-profit and charitable organizations are encouraged to submit their applications.

Holy Trinity Knights and Angels Presents Christmas House Tours

December 16th, 2012, 4:00-7:00pm - $20 Admission to tour 3 homes

We welcome you into our home to enjoy the festive spirit.

Volunteers from the communities of Timberlea, Wood Buffalo and Thickwood will open their homes for you to tour and enjoy their festive decorations. This joyful holiday event will beginning at 4 p.m. and will run until 7 p.m. You can start or stop at any home during these times. The homes are listed on the attached poster as well as on the back of the tickets. There will be a hot chocolate stand at the home in Thickwood for you to enjoy and warm your bellies, while admiring the incredible outside decorations before you venture inside. The home in Timberlea will have a bake sale for you to stock up on your Christmas treats. All proceeds from the hot chocolate stand will be for the Knights and Angels and the bake sale is a fundraiser for the choir at Holy Trinity School.

The CRAZE presented by Fort McMurray Realtors returns New Year’s Eve!

(Fort McMurray, AB, December 4, 2012) – MacDonald Island Park is excited to announce the event schedule for the CRAZE presented by Fort McMurray Realtors, Fort McMurray’s annual New Year’s Eve family extravaganza.

The CRAZE features a variety of free family events and activities for youth of all ages and will run from Noon until 6:00 pm at the Suncor Community Leisure Centre, culminating with the Shell New Year’s Eve Fireworks. A full event schedule can be viewed below.

Close to 6,000 attendees descended on MacDonald Island Park for the CRAZE in 2011 and organizers are expecting similar crowds on December 31 due to the diversity of fun activities and events on tap.

“As a free event open to the entire Wood Buffalo community, the CRAZE truly offers something for all youth,” said Jeremy Irla, CRAZE Co-Chair and Senior Supervisor of Leisure Services at MacDonald Island Park. “We invite families to take a look at the schedule and to join us in celebration on New Year’s Eve.”

The Alberta Association of Agricultural Societies would like to invite you to participate in the 2013 Breaking New Ground AAAS Convention & Tradeshow February 1 - 3, 2013.

Participation in the convention provides artists and/or entertainers exposure and booking opportunities to over 600 convention delegates representing over 140 Agricultural Societies and the many events they hold throughout Alberta. Delegates attending the convention are board members, volunteers and community leaders who are key influencer's and decision makers.

Selected Acts will be provided with space to display your communication materials and will receive additional exposure in the delegate package.

The Capacity Building Program provides strategic support to Aboriginal arts groups, collectives and organizations. This support is intended to assist the development of administration, financial management and governance structures. The program also provides opportunities for organizational development and professional development.
The Capacity Building Program is composed of the following three components. The Flying Eagle
  1. Annual Project Funding
  2. Multi-year Project Funding 

Component Description
The Flying Eagle component provides flexible short-term support to Aboriginal arts groups, collectives, organizations, independent arts administrators and artistic mediators. Grants may be used for organizational development and professional development.
Proposed activities must advance effective organizational governance and management. They can also aim at professional development in the field of arts administration.
Projects must demonstrate clear potential impact for the applicant organization and (or) individual.


Eligible Applicants
Aboriginal arts groups, collectives, organizations, independent arts administrators and artistic mediators are eligible to apply. Independent arts administrators and artistic mediators must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada, as defined by Citizenship and Immigration Canada.

To be eligible to apply to this component, applicants must demonstrate a clear commitment to the creation, public presentation and appreciation of Aboriginal arts practices.

Applicants may receive only one Flying Eagle grant in the same Canada Council fiscal year (1 April to 31 March).

Ineligible Applicants
First Nations Band or Tribal Councils or groups directly linked to Band or Tribal Councils.
Educational Institutions (schools, universities).

Eligible Activities
Proposed activities must advance organizational development or professional development. Some examples of eligible activities are:

Grant Amount
You may apply for a maximum of $4,000. You may not be awarded the full amount that you request.

Generally, this program pays a maximum of $400 each day toward the fees of professional management consultants and (or) advisors.

Nominate your Neighbour Recognition Form

Recognize a Wood Buffalo home or business for their outstanding front yard winter lighting displays and decorations.

Nomination period is open from November 15 to December 15, 2012.

Photographs submitted must be the property of the entrant and must not have been previously published or be under consideration for publication
Displays must be visible for public viewing
All pictures submitted are to be in digital format, landscape layout and labelled as: lastname_firstname_address
Images must be accompanied by a completed entry form
A panel of judges will select the photo to be featured in "Display of the Week"
Nominees will be contacted to confirm participation in the Nominate your Neighbour program

Fish Oil and Berry Juice - Fort Chipewyan Artist In Residency

In August 2012, two artists traveled to Fort Chipewyan to take part in the Wood Buffalo Artist in Residency Program (you can learn more about this program by visiting

One of the artists, Alisdair MacRae, worked closely with the Fort Chipewyan Bicentennial Museum and Mr. Oliver Glanfield to produce a project about the region and its history.

The Future of Oil - Book Talk

Join us on Friday, December 7, 2012 at 6:30pm on the second floor of the Fort McMurray Public Library for a book talk with local author Sanjay Patel, hosted by Russell Thomas.

Sanjay will be discussing his new book, The Future of Oil, which addresses the important issues and controversies of Canadian oil sands.

Following the presentation there will be a question and answer period and book signing. Light refreshments will be served.
