Chicago set to sizzle at Keyano

Go big! That’s the attitude being taken on as Keyano Theatre Company (KTC) prepares to unleash Chicago on the Wood Buffalo community in February. Rehearsals began in early December under Director Valmai Goggin, Music Director Hilary Hornberger, and Choreographer Beth Fauerbach. Since then an ever-expanding team has been working together to pull off an outrageous show.

This vivacious production features a cast of 25 singing and dancing to more than 15 choreographed musical numbers in two acts. There is a seven person artistic team, and over 30 production staff and volunteers working hundreds of hours to bring the spectacle to life.

Keyano Theatre’s stage will house a custom designed two-level set with a 9-foot platform and welded jail cell doors, moving staircases, an array of lighting marquees flown in as aerial set pieces, and over 300 sexy costumes and accessories. All of the pieces of this massive musical puzzle are built onsite, exclusively for the show by Keyano Theatre staff.

“This is a show that has a global reputation and a huge fan base,” said Claude Giroux, Artistic Director, Keyano Theatre Company. “We are pulling out all the stops to make sure that our patrons get a world-class musical theatre experience.”

The musical by Fred Ebb and John Kander is based on Maurine Dallas Watkins’ play about two real-life murderesses; Beulah Annan and Belva Gartner. Chicago is the fourth-longest running Broadway musical of all time and the longest-running Broadway revival playing over 6,200 performances worldwide. Lead roles Velma Kelly, Roxie Hart, and Billy Flynn are played in the KTC production by local community members Amanda Campbell, Alexandra Price, and Jeff Hoffman respectively.

As the production is expected to sell out, Keyano Theatre recommends purchasing tickets now to avoid disappointment later. There will be nine performances of Chicago featuring two matinee performances to accommodate the shift workers in the Wood Buffalo community.

Chicago previews February 16 and runs until February 25. Opening night is Friday February 17 featuring a special post-show champagne reception catered by the Sawridge Inn & Conference Centre. Tickets are on sale now at the Keyano Box Office. Call 780-791-4990 or visit keyano.ca/theatre
