Sock Drive September 2013


The Canadian Institute of Public Heath Inspectors (CIPHI) have decided to dedicate the entire month of September to collecting socks for the less fortunate in the community.

The sock drive will run throughout the month of September. the CIPHI are collecting new pairs of socks and they will be donated to agencies that serve the disadvantaged in Fort McMurray.

Those interested in donating new socks to the drive can do so by arranging a donation pick up with a CIPHI inspector by calling the office at 780-791-6078, or by visiting the Northern Lights Hospital between 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. and dropping their donating off with volunteers set up in front of the cafeteria during the month of September. There is also a donation box for socks set up at the Public Health Unit building in Thickwood.

Now in its fourth year and gaining national recognition, Sculpturewalk is a year-long outdoor exhibit of original sculpture by local and international artists.

The application deadline is October 15, 2013. Next year’s installation day & Opening Gala is May 10th, 2014.

Castlegar Sculpturewalk is now accepting applications from sculptors (national and international) to take part in the 2014 event.  The sculptures are owned by the artists and loaned to the exhibit, where they are available for purchase, lease, and are open for public voting.

There is a total of $25,000 in prizes available, which includes the purchase of the People’s Choice winner by The City of Castlegar for permanent display. Travel/shipping subsidies are available.

Alberta Culture Days at Heritage Park- September 29th 2013


The Fort McMurray Historical Society is proud to showcase a variety of archival material and films. With two separate showings, you don't want to miss this historical cultural event! Please provide a small donation to aid in the restoration of Heritage Park. The showings will take place on September 29th from 1 to 7.

You can join in the heritage plaque launch event and take your picture in a life-size plaque from 2 pm to 5 pm. 

This event is on Sunday, September 29, 2013 at Heritage Park. 

NorthWord magazine Issue #9 Launch and Silent Auction- Sept 28th 2013


Celebrate NorthWord magazine's ninth issue with a theme of Change. Celebrate the written word with beautiful poetry, prose, and art from local writers and artists. Join us for a silent auction and bid on delightful items! All proceeds go to support NorthWord's production of the next issue. This Thing Called Grief- Sept. 27, 2013

Please join the Alberta Hospice Palliative Care Association in a full day workshop called "This Thing Called Grief" on Friday, September 27, 2013 at MacDonald Island Park. 

 You will learn how death and grief responses are influenced by religious and cultural belief systems, and you will leave with new skills, insights and sensitivities.

Intro to Stage/Film Combat Techniques Workshop- Sept 23, 2013

Ever wonder what it takes to perform physical combat scenes in film and on the stage? The YMMFMA and the Keyano Theatre Company is holding an Introduction to Stage and Film Combat workshop led by Paul Gélineau, Director of the Academy for Fight Directors Canada on Monday, September 23, 2013 from 7 pm – 9 pm at the Keyano Theatre and Arts Centre – Room #141.

This 2-hour workshop will give you an introduction to the Fight Academy, cover Safety Factors, teach attendees the basic hand-to-hand combat techniques and how fight choreography will translate onto film.

This is a hands-on practical workshop so attendees are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing that allows them to move around freely. Attendees will also have to a sign a waiver at the beginning of the Workshop.

Hello Fort McMurray ARTISTS! I am excited to invite you to a FREE artist training weekend this October 4, 5, and 6. The training will be run by Shelley MacDonald and Cheryl Andrews. We welcome you to come find out about the community that we've been developing! We have a group of local artist-educators, First Nations Elders and Youth Mentors, and mentor artists from Alberta and the rest of the country all working together to make LTTA a Fort McMurray success story.

The Enbridge Famous 5 Speaker Series profiles extraordinarily successful women.

The Famous 5 Foundation is proud to partner with Enbridge Inc to present the 14th Annual Enbridge Famous 5 Speaker Series featuring five dynamic and engaging women.

The first speaker of the 2013/2014 series is Cara Luft, singer, song-writing and founding member of the Canadian folk trio, The Wailin' Jennys.

Les Miserables Volunteer Info Sessions- Sept. 13-15, 2013

Are you interested in being a part of KTC’s epic Les Miserables experience? 


Keyano Theatre will be hosting two community information sessions for interested volunteers. They are looking for performers, stage hands, crew, ticket takers, ushers, wardrobe assistants and more! There is a fun position for everyone! 

There are 2 easy steps to being part of the experience:

1) You must attend the information session for all volunteers opportunities on Friday, September 13th from 6pm-8pm

2) Anyone wanting to be in the volunteer cast will have to attend either Saturday, September 14th or Sunday, September 15th.

We are looking for a mixed cast of all ages. Be prepared to sing and move and have fun!

Community Registration Day- Sept 14th 2013


Community Registration Day presented by Syncrude is a one-day event at MacDonald Island designed to allow community members to access information and registration services for a variety of organizations and activities – all in one location! It’s an opportunity for families and individuals to engage with all of the sport, recreational, cultural, and community initiatives in the Wood Buffalo region.


The event is set up in a “tradeshow” format with each organization or group hosting a booth specific to their activity or organization. Throughout the day community members can visit booths to access all the information they need to become involved in a wide variety of non-profit and community groups. It serves as encouragement to “get up and go”, and become involved in the myriad opportunities available to residents. Community Registration Day presented by Syncrude has an additional benefit for non-profit organizations and community groups, who are able to use this opportunity to build capacity by connecting directly with residents, leading to strengthened social network.

9am to 10am - Exhibitor Set Up at Nexen Field House

10am to 11:30am - Networking Breakfast presented by Non Profit Sector Link at Miskanaw Ballroom. Invites will be forwarded to your organization upon completion of registration.

Keyano Conservatory Dance Try-Outs- Sept 7th 2013

NEW Competition Dance Team



Try-Outs: Saturday, September 7, 2013 from 1- 4 pm, Room 138, Keyano College

Competition team allows you to show off your dance abilities and compete throughout the year against other dance studios.  You can perform in solo, duo, or group dances.  Competitive dancing helps you gain confidence in your dance skills and self-expression.

Philosophy

Keyano Conservatory’s Competitive Dance Team is dedicated to enhancing a dancer’s technique while giving them a variety of performance opportunities and exposing them to the larger world of dance. Our mission is to give dancers a fun, positive, educational experience. Every dancer is eligible to be a part of the team and students will be split up according to their skill level.

Dance Shows

Competitive dancers will participate in four dance recitals per calendar year; 

1)      The Conservatory Halloween Howler will take place in the Recital Theatre October 25th and 26th. This show will be a celebration of everything Halloween, ghosts, goblins and of course, zombies.

2)      Christmas Concert will take place in the Main Theatre December 13th and 14th. This show will be a celebration of the holidays and feature Conservatory music students and the Competitive team. 

3)      Cupid’s Mistake will take place in the Recital Theatre February 14th and 15th. This show will center on the themes of love and heartbreak.

4)      Year End Dance Recital will showcase all Conservatory dancers, competitive and non-competitive, but the Competitive Team will have more dances and will be a highlight of the show. 

Competitions

The Competitive Team will perform in three dance competitions through the year;

1)      Shy Ann: Santana Dance, April 11 - 14, St. Albert, AB

2)      Evergreen Dance Festival, April 30 – May 4th, Sherwood Park, AB

3)      Northern Dance Competition, Fort McMurray Alberta, April 21st-23rd.

Tuition

To be a part of the Competitive Team dancers must be registered in one ballet class and one Conservatory dance class in the style in which they want to compete in. The tuition for the Competitive Team is $599 per dancer. This fee allows students to participate in a weekly two hour practice over and above their regular classes. 

Try Outs

If you are interested in being a part of the Competitive Team please first register at the Office of the Registrar in person or by phone, (780) 791-2688, then come to the try outs September 7 , room 138, 1pm-4pm. 

All students are eligible to be on the team; the try outs are a way for our instructors to have a chance to get to know you, access your abilities, skill set, and allow them to place you within the team.

Northern Insights- Arlene Dickinson- TONIGHT

Northern Insights is brought to you by the Fort McMurray Public Library; it is a 3 year-long speaker series designed to bring bestselling authors and journalists as well as educational, thought provoking, and entertaining speakers to Fort McMurray. Northern Insights will engage the community, expand our minds and capture our imaginations.

The next speaker in the series is The Dragon Den's Arlene Dickinson. Tickets will be available for purchase at the MacDonald Island Box Office and online at www.macdonaldisland.ca. Premium seating tickets will sell for $79 and general admission will sell for $49.

Games Legacy Grant 2013

Grants are available for amateur cultural and athletic activities competing or training at a provincial level or higher. 

All Athletes and Teams must QUALIFY to compete or train.

 This fund is designed to encourage the development and growth of amateur cultural and sport activities for youth and adults within a priority framework.

The maximum grant amount is $1,000 for individuals and $2,000 for groups. Limited funds are available.
The deadline to apply for the FALL allocation of the Games Legacy Grant is September 30th, 2013.
