Relaxation During the Hustle and Bustle

The holiday season can be so busy, you may get caught up in the bustle and bustle.  It is important to take time for yourself so you don’t feel overwhelmed.  Enjoy the small things.

Put together a holiday playlist with some of your favourite tunes.  Music is a great way to help you relax. A quote by Plato really captures the power of music, “Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, and life to everything.”  Take time to enjoy some music over the holidays.

Maybe a family colouring night is in the books this year.  Colouring is a great way to de-stress and bring out your creativity.  There are colouring books in numerous styles, making it easier to find one that suits each member of the family.  As well, there are many sites which offer free printable pages such as: http://www.crayola.ca/free-coloring-pages/ ; http://www.supercoloring.com/ ; and http://www.canadianfamily.ca/colouring-pages/ .  Dig out some pencil crayons, crayons or markers and have some fun colouring!

It might be a good time to start reading a new book.  Reading a well-written book can help by taking you away from the busyness of life.  According to Readers Digest, the following are the best new books for December 2016:

  • 99: Stories of the Game by Wayne Gretzky
  • Born to Run by Bruce Springsteen
  • Canada by Mike Myers
  • The Whistler by John Grisham
  • Appetites by Anthony Bourdain
  • A Game of Thrones: The Illustrated Edition by George R. R. Martin
  • Live by Night by Dennis Lehane
  • Talking as Fast as I Can by Lauren Graham
  • Cooking for Jeffrey by Ina Garten
  • Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them: The Original Screenplay by J.K. Rowling.

You can find a brief description of each novel here. If one of these sparks your interest, why not visit the Wood Buffalo Regional Library and check one out? For those exceptionally cold nights, reading is a great way to pass the time!

Find some time to relax.  Enjoy the festive lights. Reward yourself with time just for you.

Give the Gift of Music

This holiday season you are invited to make a difference in the lives of local young people as the Legacy Children’s Foundation launches an exciting crowd funding campaign to raise $50,000 for music programs that support at-risk youth in Alberta.

Going on twelve plus years, Legacy Children’s Foundations Gift of Music program has helped deserving youth ages 9 to 24 stay in school by providing long-term mentorship and music lessons. Students receive a gently-used instrument, participate in weekly lessons with instructors, and develop their musical talents and entrepreneurial skills, all while focusing on completing their education.

Legacy Children’s Foundation encourages caring individuals to rally friends, family, and colleagues to participate in the Indiegogo fundraiser and give the Gift of Music to deserving youth. Without this funding, Legacy Children’s Foundation will unfortunately be forced to scale back operations next year which will leave many youth without mentors.

The Indiegogo fundraiser campaign runs over the holidays from November 14, 2016 to January 12, 2017, and can be viewed at https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/give-the-gift-of-music-education/#/ Be the first to take advantage of exciting perks and incentives as certain quantities are limited.

If unable to make a monetary donation you can help by simply sharing this campaign with others, please help spread the word to give the 'Gift of Music'!

For more information about the Gift of Music program and the Legacy Children’s Foundation, please visit www.legacygiftofmusic.com.

Prepare To Be Amazed With Some WinterPLAY Magic!

Prepare To Be Amazed With Some WinterPLAY Magic!

Come one, come all to see the street performer and busker extraordinaire, Nikolai Smith! This familiar WinterPLAY personality – who you may remember from last year’s Festival as the renaissance jester – is back to wow you once again in 2016 with his juggling, sleight of hand and roving entertainment. Nikolai’s comedic, interactive and energetic performance makes him one of Alberta’s most sought-after festival entertainers and a Fort McMurray fan-favourite.

With a full weekend line-up, you can be sure to see Nikolai’s act on the following dates and times:
·         Friday, February 19 @ 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.
·         Saturday, February 20 @ 1 p.m. – 6 p.m.
·         Sunday, February 21 @ 1 p.m. – 6 p.m.

One aspect of Nikolai’s performance that makes his show so fun to attend is that he often needs members from the audience to be his assistant to help complete his tricks. For kids who want to be selected, (and for parents who want to avoid the limelight), Nikolai offered up one secret to improve your chances at getting picked, (or for parents, getting looked over): SIT UP FRONT! That’s right adult viewers, if you think hanging out in the back row will keep you out of the performance, Nikolai said that’s his favourite area to pull parents from to engage in the show. So don’t be shy when attending a Nikolai show: get up close, prepare to be amazed and get ready to shout ABRACADABRA!

For more information on Nikolai Smith, check out his website at: http://www.nikolaismith.com/.

Dan Gillies Performs at the 2016 WinterPLAY Festival

Dan Gillies is no stranger to the Wood Buffalo community – especially if you attended last year’s – 2015 Western Canada Summer Games Opening Ceremony- having performed at countless festivals, private events and bars since 2008. He’s known for his jazzy instrumental performances, but at this year’s WinterPLAY Festival you’re in store for a very different Dan Gillies than you’ve seen in the past.

On Friday, February 19, 2016 from 7 p.m. – 8 p.m. you can expect to hear the likes of the Goo Goo Dolls, Foo Fighters and a plethora of Big Shiny Tunes 2 artists thanks to Dan’s 90s rock-inspired set-list! With his hair down and a more rock-inspired look, you might be caught doing a double take, half thinking you’re seeing Dave Grohl himself on the stage.

Being collaborative and sampling from different genres is what’s kept Dan’s career thriving. He says that being versatile and willing to try new things is what has allows him to capitalize on so many different performance opportunities. While he considers himself primarily a strings man, he does own a set of bagpipes (though rumour has it they won’t be making an appearance anytime soon in one of his performances). Dan’s new “rock show” set is the culmination of a pet project idea that started about a year ago and one that he’s been testing out at a variety of events since then. It’s very exciting to have Dan perform at WinterPLAY again and he couldn’t be more excited to continue to share this new vibe of his with the RMWB community.

So whether you’re a long-time fan of 90s era music or just looking to have a music-filled Friday night out, but sure to check out Dan’s set at 7 p.m.!

For more information on Dan Gillies music, please check out his website: DanGilliesMusic.com.

Elizabeth Clarke in Concert

Fort McMurray is in for a classical delight!

The Fort McMurray Music Teachers’ Association is pleased to present a weekend of classical music, October 17th and 18th at the Casman Centre Amphitheatre.

On Saturday, October 17, 1 pm-5:15pm, there will be a Master Classes recital featuring local piano students. On Sunday, October 18, 7 pm, master pianist Elizabeth Clarke will perform. Both performance are free of charge.

Last week, Community Strategies Coordinator, Alanna Bottrell chatted with Fort McMurray’s own Elizabeth Clarke about her passion for piano.

Alanna Bottrell: Tell us about yourself

Elizabeth Clarke: I was born and raised in Fort McMurray, where I lived with my family until I finished high school.  Then I did my undergraduate degree in music at the University of Alberta, Augustana Campus in Camrose and now I am finishing my Masters degree at the University of Victoria.

AB: I assume you took piano lessons as a child.  Was it a chore or did you love it?

EC: Yes, I started when I was six.  As with any kind of learning, sometimes I loved it and sometimes it was hard work and I wished I could be off playing with my friends instead.  That probably still applies!

AB: What made you stick with it?

EC: Initially I think I liked the challenge, and I wanted to play because my older sister did.  After that it was just something I always did.  From the beginning I saw that the more I practiced the better I got, so I wanted to stick with it and see how far I could go.

AB: Who's the best piano teacher you ever had?

EC: That's a hard question, as I have had a lot of piano teachers and I have learned different things from each of them.  Some have focused more on technique, some on musicality, and some on performance skills and I am grateful for what I have learned from all of them.  I think the best teacher is one who understands the individuality of each student and is able to work in a way that inspires them.

AB: What advice do you have for a child/youth struggling with piano lessons?

EC: I think it's incredibly important for students to listen to advanced piano repertoire performed by professionals from an early age.  That's what inspires us to work harder and get better.  If your only concept of piano playing is rudimentary finger exercises or struggling to read notes, of course you won't want to stick with it.  But if you know how exciting and beautiful piano playing can be, then you have something to work towards.

I think it should be required for all young students to go to Classical music concerts where possible or at the very least listen to a lot of recordings.  Symphonies, chamber music, opera, solo repertoire- it really doesn't matter as long as their musical curiosity is piqued. I think another key is showing children how creative they can be at the piano.  So many piano methods are very restrictive, teaching children "right" and "wrong" finger technique without encouraging them to listen to the sound they are actually making.  So it becomes more like typing class than music making.  Students can be much more inspired when they learn to listen and realize that they can make artistic choices that affect the music.

AB: What are your career aspirations?

EC: I'm hoping to start my doctoral degree next year, and eventually have a career that blends teaching and performing.

AB: What are some things that people don't know about piano players?

EC: I think a lot of people don't realize how much intellectual thought and hard work goes into preparing a piece.  Just learning the notes is the equivalent of a sculptor ordering a block of marble.  It's the basis that everything starts from, but the real art comes from what you do with your block.  Pianists have to make so many choices about nuances in the music and these can really make the difference between a moving performance and something that falls flat.  The only way to figure all these things out is careful practice and experimentation.  We don't just sit down and magically make music happen!

AB: What will you be playing at the concert in Fort McMurray?

EC: I will be playing pieces by Benjamin Britten, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Robert Schumann, and Ludwig van Beethoven.  The first piece, Britten's "Holiday Diary" suite was written in 1934 while he was still a student at the Royal Conservatory in London, England, and is dedicated to his piano teacher at the time, Arthur Benjamin. It is meant to evoke scenes from a seaside holiday and is a lot of fun to play.  The Rachmaninoff was written only three years before, in 1931, but it is stylistically very different and more closely related to the traditions of the 19th century.  It is very beautiful but has a dark, gloomy mood throughout.  Things get more hopeful with my Schumann piece, whose German title translates to "Songs of Dawn".

It's a set of five short pieces that are meant to evoke the feelings one would have at the approach and growth of the morning.  The final piece is Beethoven's Piano Sonata in A Major, Op. 101.  It's one of his last piano sonatas and has a deeper, more spiritual mood than some of his earlier works.  Many of these pieces are not often performed, so I am excited to share them with people who may not have heard them before.

AB: What's your favourite music to play?  Why?

EC: Some of my favourite composers are Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, and Brahms.  I love how their music is both emotionally moving and intellectually well put together.  Careful thought went into every note that was composed, and the focus is usually on the beauty of the music itself and not on the virtuosity of the performer.  It's a real challenge to think through this music and come up with a convincing interpretation, but it's always.

For more information about the concert please contact:  Janey at 780-792-8928.

The World Meets in Wood Buffalo

From September 23-27 the Regional Municipality will be celebrating Alberta Culture Days. Alberta Culture Days started in 2008 as Alberta Arts Day – one day to recognize the value of the province’s arts and cultural communities, with 100 events held in 30 communities. Since then, it has expanded into an annual three-day celebration that helped inspire the creation of Culture Days — a pan-Canadian movement to raise the awareness, accessibility, participation and engagement of all Canadians in the arts and cultural life of their communities. In 2014, there were more than 1,200 events in 98 Alberta communities.

The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo has taken part since 2009 and the event has become so popular that three days are not enough to showcase the community’s vibrant arts, rich heritage and cultural diversity. We are devoting five days to promoting and appreciating the artists, creative professionals, volunteers and non-profit groups that help make the region a great place to live, work and PLAY! From September 23-27, there are all kinds of activities and performances for residents of all ages. All of the events are planned and presented by our very own community members and are FREE to attend.

The World Meets in Wood Buffalo, created and organized by the Multicultural Association of Wood Buffalo, has been a highlight of the Alberta Culture Days Festival for the past two years.  The event brings together cultures from around the world onto one stage to preform cultural and folk dances plus music from their home countries. This year the show will feature over 15 different cultural dances. Admission is free plus there will be multicultural snacks for purchase. The event will be taking place September 26, 6pm-9pm and September 27, 2pm-5pm at Shell Place, SP Grand Ballroom CD.  The World Meets in Wood Buffalo is proudly sponsored by Nexen, The United Way, the Government of Canada, and the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.

The Multicultural Association’s mandate is to support cultural groups and newcomers through services, programs, events and initiatives that foster cross-cultural awareness and understanding. By integrating newcomers and encouraging local residents to take pride in their heritage the Multicultural Association helps to build and celebrate the diverse culture of Wood Buffalo.  Their vision is to create unity in diversity with the goal that our diverse cultures are reflected in all aspect of our society from the economy to government.

“Building bridges across different cultures and developing friendships are the bedrock of building community; it also makes a community welcoming and inclusive and helps people stand up against racism and discrimination. Multiculturalism adds colour and vibrancy to the community, breaks myths and misconceptions about uncommon cultures and building a place all can call home,” says Executive Director Mary Thomas.

If you would like to support the Multicultural Association they are seeking volunteers to help at their upcoming events, their language clubs taking place at local schools, and participants to take part in dialogues and discussions.
