Let's Get Sketchy! Nov. 30, 2013 at Keyano Theatre

A number of arts organizations are working together to put on a multi-disciplinary and interactive themed event at Keyano Theatre. “Let’s Get Sketchy!” will take place in Keyano Art Gallery and in the Theatre lobby on the evening of November 30th as patrons arrive for the Saturday performance of Catalyst Theatre’s new musical Vigilante. In the spirit of the production, set in the late 1800’s, actors in period garb will be posing in a number of different locations. Artists and community members will sketch the tableaus while poets and creative writers capture the scene in words. All of this will happen while local musicians create a live soundtrack to the #YMMARTS Happening.

“Let’s Get Sketchy!” is a collaborative project of Boreal Artist Institute, Brazen Elephant Productions, Full Moon Cafe, Keyano Theatre Company, Arts Council Wood Buffalo, Portrait Artists McMurray and NorthWord.

NorthWord and Events Wood Buffalo presents Shane Koyczan

NorthWord Magazine, launching issue #8 Fire, and Events Wood Buffalo presents Shane Koyczan, a virtuoso of the spoken word and one of the stars of the 2012 Vancouver Olympics Opening Ceremony. He will change your mind about poetry forever.

With his rhythmic verse in high gear, he navigates his audience through social and political territory with a furious honesty and a tender humanity that has brought audiences to their feet in New York, London, Edinburgh, Sydney, and Los Angeles. Winner of the US Slam Poetry Championship and the Canadian Spoken Word Olympics, Koyczan is truley and extraordinary talent that has blown the dust off of the designation "poet".

"Shane Koyczan is electrifying. It's a rare poet who can make his audience laugh and cry; this is a writer who will break your heart then heal it." - Val McDermid, author of the Grave Tattoo.

Words in Motion Launch

The Words in Motion 2012 was a pilot program that was introduced by the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. This program was created to promote literacy and to allow new and existing writers an opportunity to share their poetry. Poetry was gathered from local school students and the general public.

There was a wonderful turnout for the Words in Motion launch which took place at the Fort McMurray Public Library on April 2; close to 100 people attended the event to support our local poets. Highlights of the evening included a speech by Mayor Melissa Blake, two of the selected poets shared their poetry, and a WOOSH bus was onsite, displaying two poems inside.

The launch of Words in Motion was very successful. There were 118 poetry entries from local school students and 26 entries from the general public. It was wonderful to receive such a wide array of poetry from residents of all ages. Forty poems were selected by the selection panel to be displayed inside of the buses for the month of April which is National Poetry Month.

All poetry submissions are available to be viewed at the following website: http://www.woodbuffalo.ab.ca/living_2227/Art---Culture/Words-in-Motion/Words-in-Motion-Poetry.htm

A special thank you to our partners: the Fort McMurray Public Library, NorthWord, and the Fort McMurray Catholic and Public School Boards. Also, we would like to thank our selection panel members: Jennifer Mason, Shauna Murray, and Kiran Malik-Khan.

This April, travel to your destination via public transit and enjoy reading poems written by local poets.
