This family oriented free event is created to celebrate our partnership with many visual art organizations and community members.  There will be artist demonstrations as well as workshops for all ages.

This unique seminar will give you marketing insights from Scottsdale, AZ gallery owner and author J. Jason Horejs.

With over 16 years of gallery experience, including 8 years as owner of Xanadu, Horejs has experienced first-hand the challenges artists face when approaching galleries. He has also observed that many artists are making the same mistakes and are ill-prepared to be talking to gallery owners, setting themselves up for frustration and often failure.

Amazingly, despite the fact that there are thousands of workshops and courses providing artists with opportunities to learn new artistic techniques and skills, there are very few opportunities to learn about the practical side of the art business, especially when it comes to the topic of finding the right galleries to carry your work and how best to approach them. Finding a great demand for information in this area, Horejs developed this intensive workshop that will provide you with an inside understanding of the gallery business.

Armed with the knowledge of what gallery owners are looking for, what groundwork needs to be laid ahead of time and how best to present themselves, Horejs believes every artist can successfully find good representation for their work and generate sales.

Surfaces: New exhibit opening at MacDonald Community Art Gallery

Surfaces: Exploration of Light, Texture and Contrast

From May 2 to May 30

Artists: Joanne Pilgrim, Tamara M. Hannah and Lil Barefoot 

Grand Opening: May 3 at 7:00pm

Location: MacDonald Island Community Art Gallery (second floor of the Suncor Community Leisure Centre)

This exhibition presents a variety of media such as fused glass, ceramic tiles, paintings and collages. Surfaces: Exploration of Light, Texture and Contrast is all about exploring, mixing and trying a variety of materials and surfaces. Three local visual artists invite viewers to interpret their artwork and explore their passion for colour, light and shadow.

"My work in this exhibition explores relationships between nostalgia and traditional ceramic techniques. I have incorporated simple hand building, wheel thrown designs, and surface treatments to create objects that invoke different aspects of nostalgia.                                     Instead of vivid memories, I have abstractly captured visceral representations of familiar sentiments".

"I developed my art skills by working and trying different mediums such as paper tole and faux painting. Looking for something different l took a course about fused glass and how to use a kiln. Currently, I am working with glass creating utility and non utilitarian art".

Call for Artist: Stony Plain Town Mural Program

This is an open competition for the creation of a mural in Stony Plain.

The selected artist will work with the Town of Stony Plain's Creative Community Committee, representatives from the Stony Plain Public Library and members of the community to design, develop and paint a mural on the Stony Plain Public Library Building. The mural will be part of the Town's extensive mural program, which depicts the rich heritage and culture of the community.

About the Town of Stony Plain Mural ProgramThe Town of Stony Plain retains all the warmth and charm of its deep cultural and agricultural roots. More than 30 breathtaking murals, designed by artists from across Canada, illustrate this rich heritage. These outdoor paintings, ranging in size and scope, depict scenes from Stony Plain's past and adorn a number of buildings throughout the community.

The mural will be placed on the south wall facing the parking lot in the space between the library and a retail business.

The Mural Using a contemporary/abstract style, the mural will reflect the history and development of the Stony Plain Library and its role in the community. The mural will be featured as part of the Alberta Culture Days celebrations held at the Stony
Plain Public Library on Sept. 29, 2012. The Library has requested that a community involvement component be part of the mural creation, where possible.

Artist's Responsibilities

• Attend required meetings to determine mural concept and production – June/July, 2012
• Work with the Creative Community Committee and other stakeholders to develop and design a mural maquette
• Paint the mural following established timelines and provide suggestions for community involvement during the process
• Work with the Creative Community Committee and Stony Plain Library to launch the new mural

Skills and Qualifications

• Experience in community-based programs
• Excellent communication, organizational and team-work skills
• Experience in mural painting
• Knowledge of the community is an asset

Submission Requirements

• Letter of interest
• Up-to-date resume
• Three (3) reference letters
• Colour slides or photographs depicting a maximum of six (6) past works, including samples of mural work (please label each slide or photo with the following: artist’s name, title, location, date, size and medium; include a postage-paid self-addressed envelope, if you require materials returned)
• Preliminary sketch of conceptual design and/or artistic vision statement for the proposed mural
• Commission fee

ProcessUpon review of submissions, a short list of artists will be contacted to produce a detailed design based on the mural theme. The designs will then be reviewed, and artists will be contacted for a final interview. The selected artist will be required to attend preliminary meetings with the Creative Community Committee and key stakeholders in June/July, 2012. Painting of the mural will take place in a schedule mutually agreed to by the Town of Stony Plain and the artist.

All submissions will be short (max. 15 minutes) and can be music, writing/storytelling, dance, fine/visual arts, and traditional arts, to be presented on stage in traditional or contemporary styles from established and merging Aboriginal artists. Written pieces may be workshopped and will be presented by professional indigenous actors/directors.

Federation of Canadian Artists – Call for Submissions

Drawing Exhibition is an open, international, juried exhibition of original drawings, in any drawing media, open to all living artists worldwide. A special category has been included for students enrolled in post-secondary institutions in the arts as well as emerging artists. This category will be juried separately and will qualify for prizes offered, adjudicated by the award jury.

Categories
Student/Emerging Artist category – if you are enrolled in a post-secondary art institution, or you are in your first 5 years of serious artistic endeavour, then you are eligible to enter this category.

Artist category – all living artists that do not qualify for the student/emerging artist category. Entries must not be copies, derivatives, or based in any way on other copyrighted or published paintings, photographs or other artistic works. They must be entirely the work of the entrant, executed without the supervision of an instructor. Work must not have been previously exhibited in any other FCA exhibition. All work must be for sale and priced in Canadian funds with intent to sell. Inadmissible works: Photographs, giclées, posters and any other type of mechanical reproduction. To avoid disappointment, please contact the FCA if you have any questions about eligibility.
