Keyano College Lecture Series: How to Write Poems About Fires

Keyano College is once again hosting a free lecture series for the community to enjoy.

The lecture series is hosted by various instructors from the College, and the lectures range in theme and topic. Attending a lecture is a wonderful opportunity to engage in meaningful conversation and to learn something new about a topic that has piqued your interest!

The next lecture will be held on Friday, October 28, 2016 and will explore "How to Write Poems About Fires". The lecture will be hosted by Dr. Ryan Cox, an English instructor at Keyano.

Dr. Cox seeks to demystify the process of creating a poem and will answer questions such as, "How do you write a poem?" and "What does a poem even look like?"

There will also be a special presentation of new poetry that was written with the support of an Alberta Foundation for the Arts grant.

Be sure to make Oct. 28th in your calendars and join Dr. Cox in the Keyano Recital Theatre at 7 pm.

FREE Lecture about the Cold War at Keyano College

What are you supposed to do when you see the flash? Duck and Cover! For forty-five years, humanity lived in fear of the atomic bomb. Civilians were bombarded by propaganda telling them to be afraid and protect themselves from the Red Menace that could happen any moment. How did people become so afraid and how did the messages of fear change over time?

Come back in time to when children cowered under their desks, when families built bomb shelters in their years and the missiles could fly at any time.

This FREE lecture series will be taking place in the Keyano Recital Theatre at 7 pm on Friday, February 21, 2014.

How we get from Dracula to Twilight or Why Slow Zombies are Scarier

The way a culture construct its monsters reveals its deepest fears and anxieties. Concerns about political turmoil, economic conditions, scientific advancement and even gender and sexuality all manifest in the scary stories that we produce. As a result, our monsters are constantly changing. So what does the movement from Bela Lugosi’s Dracula to Twilight’s Edward Cullen tell us about shifting attitudes towards sex? What are the cultural reasons for the current zombie craze? These secrets and more will be revealed as we look at the evolution and meaning of some of our favourite monsters.

The stories come from a worldwide tradition that stretches back to earliest times, and these traditional tales reveal some of the deepest anxieties and preoccupations of human life. Are these stories for children? Step over to the dark side of the nursery and explore why Grimm is grimmer than you thought.

Keyano Lecture Series: Comet ISON - Oct. 11, 2013

The discovery of Comet 2012 S1 (ISON) created a sensation with predictions that this comet could be visible during daylight. Whether this comet lives up to its potential is a matter of speculation that will be settled in the Fall of 2013 when ISON approaches the sun. In this lecture, Dr. Jean-Pierre De Villiers will discuss the process of discovering comets,
predicting their trajectories, and explaining the transformations that comets undergo on their journey into the inner part of the Solar System.

Join us afterward for a viewing of ISON.

Conformal Gravity: Has Einstein’s Dream Been Realized?
Lecture by Jean-Pierre De Villiers

You may have heard of superstrings, a model that promises to unify all the fundamental forces of nature, but have you heard of conformal gravity? This new approach to gravity holds out great promise as a framework for reconciling the quantum and classical world view of physics. This talk summarizes recent developments in the field and explores whether or not the quest begun by Einstein has been realized.

Weather permitting, there will be an astronomical viewing following the event. We serve refreshments after the presentation, which offers guests a chance to meet and chat with our professors.

Contact Alanna.Bottrell@keyano.ca for more information about this lecture and future lecture topics.
