Give the Gift of Music

This holiday season you are invited to make a difference in the lives of local young people as the Legacy Children’s Foundation launches an exciting crowd funding campaign to raise $50,000 for music programs that support at-risk youth in Alberta.

Going on twelve plus years, Legacy Children’s Foundations Gift of Music program has helped deserving youth ages 9 to 24 stay in school by providing long-term mentorship and music lessons. Students receive a gently-used instrument, participate in weekly lessons with instructors, and develop their musical talents and entrepreneurial skills, all while focusing on completing their education. 

Legacy Children’s Foundation encourages caring individuals to rally friends, family, and colleagues to participate in the Indiegogo fundraiser and give the Gift of Music to deserving youth. Without this funding, Legacy Children’s Foundation will unfortunately be forced to scale back operations next year which will leave many youth without mentors.

A Wood Buffalo Narrative

The Legacy Children's Foundation

Since 2006, The Legacy Children’s Foundation has been working hard to create all-inclusive music programming in Alberta that engages financially challenged families and at risk children and youth. Through music programs such as The Instruments of Change mentoring program in Wood Buffalo, The Legacy Children’s Foundation has witnessed the powerful draw that music has for young people and how significant this type of programming has been in shaping the lives of this community's most vulnerable populations.

Instruments of Change provides musical instruments to under privileged children and youth while also supplying them the financial resources to pay for lessons from local, first-rate musicians, and various music-related workshops that introduce them to the many career options available to them through the music industry.

"I like that song!"

That is what Morgan, a student at Anzac school said with a big smile, when we learned Phyllis Sinclair’s song "Minoh Awasis" this fall. Phyllis is a songwriter and writes in Cree, and Morgan has connected with this song which has traditional aboriginal percussion.

We adapted Phyllis' song to guitar, using a percussive style on a simple Chord progression. The student is taking Cree in school and is pleased to hear songs can include Cree. 

 

Morgan has a one half hour lesson per week with her mentor.  Morgan sets up her music space with enthusiasm and focuses intently on the frets and always wants to know the next step. Morgan keeps her own notes.

Morgan was referred to Instruments of Change Wood Buffalo by her music teacher Kelli Northrop at Anzac School. Morgan has expressed her joy in music, playing ukulele and some guitar with Grandfather in the past.

Students in Wood Buffalo experience success in so many ways, and now through the Music Arts!

Timberlea School, Second Annual Benefit Concert

                                       

                                

Come and enjoy some great music while helping your community at the Timberlea School Second Annual Benefit Concert, Friday, October 2, 6pm - 9pm. Timberlea School will be collecting monetary donations for their Breakfast Program and gently used instruments for Instruments of Change program run by the Legacy Children’s Foundation. As a fun and interactive addition to the Benefit Concert there will be a song circle or "round robin" in the atrium at the end of the concert where audience members can bring their own instruments and participate.

Timberlea School Breakfast Program is run by parent volunteers who provide healthy breakfasts to hungry students, ensuring they get a great start to the day and are ready to learn. This program costs approximately $6,000 per year and relies on donations.  If you are interested in supporting this amazing program, please contact Jessica Balsom or Rick Thorne at (780) 743-5771.

Mount Royal University Conservatory Hiring Instructor

Mount Royal Conservatory is seeking an instructor for its Music With Your Baby (MWYB) program. 

We are looking for someone who enjoys working with very young children (0-36 months), teaching songs and musical games to parents and children, fostering a love of music, and giving parents skills for creating a musical environment in their families and homes. 

MWYB welcomes a diversity of Earl Childhood pedagogical backgrounds and training. 

Teachers in the MWYB program have, over the years, had backgrounds in a variety of early childhood pedagogical disciplines: Suzuki, Dalcroze, Orff and Kodaly. MWYB class sizes are small – usually no more than 8 children, along with their parent(s) – and are 45 minutes long. 

Classes take place at Mount Royal University’s Lincoln Park Campus. This position commences in September, 2014.

Free Family Fun Gala!

The Pakistan Canada Association will be holding its first Family Fun Gala at the Syncrude Sports and Wellness Centre.

The Family Fun Gala will include many activities for kids such as face-painting, Hina Tatoo, bouncy castle, pick-up basketball, and MUCH MORE!! Kids will be able to interact with each other and enjoy a fun, action-filled event with their peers!

It will go on from 12 pm until 5 pm. Bring your family & friends and join us for a great day!

Stuffed Animal Sleepover at the Fort McMurray Public Library

Feel the Forces Discovery Lab 2013

Discover some of the different forces of the world through hands-on experiments. 

Measure friction with some familiar every-day objects, you may be surprised. 

The force of gravity is what creates weight on Earth. Test this forces and see the effect on a rubber band. 

Roller coasters stay in place because of centrifugal force. See this in action with a simple experiment using a spinning cup.

Fort McMurray Public Library Children's Summer Reading Incentive Program

Children's Summer Reading Incentive Program- Imagine!

Registration is still open for 6-12 year old readers. The registration fee is $5 and each craft and activity is $2. Each participant has the opportunity to win weekly prizes for reading just 90 minutes each week! Participants can begin recording their reading minutes starting July 2. Participants can enter 1 ballot per week online or at the Children's Help Desk. Keep track of your total reading minutes to enter the grand prize draw for most books read!
