As a fun and interactive addition to the Benefit Concert there will be a song circle or "round robin" in the atrium at the end of the concert where audience members can bring their own instruments and participate.

Timberlea School Breakfast Program is run by parent volunteers who provide healthy breakfasts to hungry students, ensuring they get a great start to the day and are ready to learn. This program costs approximately $6,000 per year and relies on donations.  If you are interested in supporting this amazing program, please contact Jessica Balsom or Rick Thorne at (780) 743-5771.

The Legacy Children’s Foundation focuses on supporting financially challenged, at risk, children and youth providing them with musical instruments and the financial resources to pay for lessons from exceptional, local, musicians. Participants also receive various music-related workshops that introduce them to the many career options available to them in the music industry. Instructors are selected not merely for their musical talents but for their ability to mentor and form positive relationships with their students. Royal Tyrrell Museum Palaeo Arts Contest

PALAEO ARTS CONTEST

Palaeontologists use fossils to understand ancient animals and environments. Palaeoartists then help scientists to bring their research to life. Here’s your chance to be a palaeoartist!
The Royal Terryll Museum's annual Palaeo Arts Contest is open to all grade levels, has prizes for every winner, and offers the chance to have your winning artwork displayed at the Museum. This year, their scientists have selected a Lambeosaurus skull to discover and interpret through art!
Students should do research about their topic, then let their imagination go wild by turning what they have learned into an original work of art.

All contest entries must be postmarked, or delivered to the Museum, no later than December 31, 2014.

Lambeosaurus is a type of hadrosaur (duck-billed dinosaur).
These plant-eating dinosaurs lived in herds and sported interesting crests on their skulls.

For more information on the contest and how to apply, please click here or visit www.tyrrellmuseum.com

POSTER CATEGORIES

KINDERGARTEN    Hadrosaur Family
Palaeontologists think that the head crests of hadrosaurs (duck-billed dinosaurs) got bigger and developed as the dinosaurs grew up. What do you think? Did baby hadrosaurs have crests? Were the crest of males and females different? Draw a Lambeosaurus family showing what features made them the same, and what made them different.

GRADES 1 – 2         Lambeosaurus Locomotion By looking at their fossil leg bones and footprint tracks, palaeontologists believe that hadrosaurs could walk on four legs (quadrupedal), or sometimes run on two legs (bipedal). What do you think? Show how Lambeosaurus got around.

GRADES 3 – 4         Dinosaur Defense
How might Lambeosaurus have protected themselves from predators? By herding? Running away? Calling for help? ShowLambeosaurus defending itself from predators.

GRADES 5 – 6         Head Gear Most hadrosaur species looked pretty similar, but the crests on their skulls were very different. Show how hadrosaurs used their crests. Was it for species recognition? To get a date? Team sports? Playing in a musical band? Perhaps a wacky fashion show? Be creative!

Instruments of Change Music Program in Wood Buffalo

The Legacy Children’s Foundation/Tervita "Instruments of Change" Music Program is Coming to Wood Buffalo!
The Legacy Children’s Foundation is pleased to announce that their proven and popular music programming is coming to Wood Buffalo!
The program will support financially challenged/at risk children and youth by providing: musical instruments, the financial resources to pay for lessons from local, first rate musicians and various music related workshops that introduce youth to the many career options available to them through the music industry... to date well over 500 young people in close to 30 different community based locations throughout Alberta have been supported.
Daniel, a participant in one of Legacy’s school based sites, flashes a huge smile when asked to talk about his experience with the program.  Daniel is a grade 7 student who has been taking lessons since November 2012.  His favourite part of learning to play guitar is having the ability to share and show off his skills to his family and peers.
He is most excited to be able to learn notes and tabs so that he can teach himself how to play songs that he finds on the Internet. Prior to becoming engaged with the Legacy program, he would feel sad because he was not able to play songs that he heard and liked. His goal, by next year, is to be able to play a lot of songs and to be able to tune a guitar without having to use an electronic tuner. Daniel commented that lessons are only possible for him as a result of being offered the opportunity by the Legacy Children’s Foundation Gift of Music programming.
The primary objectives of these programs are to assist youth like Daniel to complete their education and to stay on a positive life path. The programs continue to yield incredibly powerful results with over 80% of participating youth remaining in school and out of trouble with the law. As we all know completing high school is a huge cornerstone to becoming a successful and contributing adult and Legacy is honoured to bring their program to a community that has shown such a high level of enthusiasm and that has an incredible pool of artists to draw from.
