The first Government of Canada History Awards

The new Government of Canada History Awards is a new program that will honour outstanding students and teachers who show an interest in celebrating Canadian history. The Awards will be administered by Canada's History, an independent national organization with a mandate to make our nation's past relevant and accessible to all Canadians.

The Awards consists of up to 225 awards for secondary school students and up to 30 awards for secondary school teachers. Award winners will be selected from across Canada, with fair distribution for all provinces and territories. They do not interfere with provincial and territorial educational systems, but rather promote an appreciation of Canadian history by rewarding excellence from teachers and students who choose to compete.

Recipients of Government of Canada History Awards for students will include secondary school students who demonstrate outstanding achievement in undertaking projects on Canada’s history. The Government of Canada History Awards for teachers will be awarded to secondary school teachers for their innovative teaching plans on Canada's history. Canada’s History will be responsible for screening applicants’ submissions and for choosing the assessors to evaluate those submissions.

Instruments of Change Music Program in Wood Buffalo

The Legacy Children’s Foundation/Tervita "Instruments of Change" Music Program is Coming to Wood Buffalo!

The Legacy Children’s Foundation is pleased to announce that their proven and popular music programming is coming to Wood Buffalo! 

The program will support financially challenged/at risk children and youth by providing: musical instruments, the financial resources to pay for lessons from local, first rate musicians and various music related workshops that introduce youth to the many career options available to them through the music industry... to date well over 500 young people in close to 30 different community based locations throughout Alberta have been supported.

Daniel, a participant in one of Legacy’s school based sites, flashes a huge smile when asked to talk about his experience with the program.  Daniel is a grade 7 student who has been taking lessons since November 2012.  His favourite part of learning to play guitar is having the ability to share and show off his skills to his family and peers.

He is most excited to be able to learn notes and tabs so that he can teach himself how to play songs that he finds on the Internet. Prior to becoming engaged with the Legacy program, he would feel sad because he was not able to play songs that he heard and liked. His goal, by next year, is to be able to play a lot of songs and to be able to tune a guitar without having to use an electronic tuner. Daniel commented that lessons are only possible for him as a result of being offered the opportunity by the Legacy Children’s Foundation Gift of Music programming.

The primary objectives of these programs are to assist youth like Daniel to complete their education and to stay on a positive life path. The programs continue to yield incredibly powerful results with over 80% of participating youth remaining in school and out of trouble with the law. As we all know completing high school is a huge cornerstone to becoming a successful and contributing adult and Legacy is honoured to bring their program to a community that has shown such a high level of enthusiasm and that has an incredible pool of artists to draw from.

Amazing Astronomy at the Oil Sands Discovery Centre

The Oil Sands Discovery Centre is bringing you an out-of-this-world experience by giving you the unique opportunity to observe the night sky from inside the dome of a real planetarium!

Drop-In Planetarium shows will be offered Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays throughout the month of February at the times noted below. Planetarium shows are included with admission. Space in the planetarium is limited so arrive early! 

Large groups must pre-book to view the planetarium separately. To inquire about available times contact Diana Moser at extension 231. Spaces are filling quickly so book early!

An astronomy themed Discovery Lab will also be offered Friday afternoons, Saturdays, and Sundays for the entire month of February! Included with admission.

Name the New school in Eagle Ridge

Name that school

Residents of Fort McMurray are running out of time to be a part of history as their chance to name a new school coming to Fort McMurray is almost up.

According to the Fort McMurray Catholic School District website, the district is currently looking for public submissions on what to name a new school coming to Eagle Ridge with construction expected for 2014.


The website explained, “The public is invited to submit a potential name for our new school. Along with the proposed name, please include a rationale for your submission, for example, a prominent Catholic figure or one with historical meaning in Fort McMurray.”


Name submissions must be sent to the New School Naming Committee by Feb. 1 and can be sent to Kathleen Murphy-House at kmurphy@fmcsd.ab.ca.

Free Amateur (HAM) Radio Course

The Amateur Radio club of Alberta is offering a free public information session on Saturday, January 7, 2012 at the Fort McMurray Public Library starting at 10:00am.  Learning how to use an amateur radio device is considered to be a valuable skill; they can be used as a means of communication when cellphones and other transmitter devices fail.

Host a Canadian Conservation Institute Workshop

 

The Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI) offers workshops for heritage organizations and associations both within Canada and internationally. Their goal is to help institutions build capacity in preserving and conserving the objects in their collections. 

Your institution or association is invited to submit an application to host a CCI workshop in your region for the 2012-13 fiscal year (April 1, 2012 – March 31, 2013). Details about the workshops can be found at; www.cci-icc.gc.ca.  The cost to host the workshop is $500.00 and there are two available workshops for the British Columbia – Alberta region.

In addition, two regional workshops are available each year for Aboriginal communities and organizations. 

The Canadian Conservation Institute is committed to the ongoing development of specific modules based on expressed community needs, demand and research.  They hope that the support within the workshops will serve as valuable reference tools for participants when they return to their working environments.
