2013 TransALTA interPLAY Festival: Mark Your Calendars!

Events Wood Buffalo is sending a friendly reminder to all residents of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo to mark your calendars, plan to stay in town and get ready for the 23^rd annual TransALTAinterPLAY festival!

On the heels of the YMM Canada Day announcements, this year’s interPLAY festival is also gearing towards a local theme of community pride and showcasing the talents we have in our backyard. In saying this, we are looking for performers, artists, volunteers and much more as submissions for interPLAY events are now available.

The popular Marketplace is also back for another year to showcase local artists and artisans. Residents can view and purchase local goods such as clothing, art, accessories and much more. To be a part of this year’s Marketplace, please complete the form at, www.inter-play.ca.   

The 8^th annual Suncor Homegrown Talent Competition is looking for the best vocals Fort McMurray has. If you think you have what it takes to be the number 1 singer in the region, please register yourself or your band at, www.inter-play.ca, and EWB staff will contact successful applicants by July 12. The Suncor Homegrown Talent Competition will take place the last three days of interPLAY, August 9-11 at the Keyano Theatre.

If acting and the theatre are more your lifestyle, interPLAY will be taking over all three spaces at the Keyano Theatre & Arts Centre, August 9-11, for a three-day set of performances. Those residents interested in performing and being involved in the different plays, including fringe theatre and cabaret, are asked to fill out the submission form at, www.inter-play.ca.   

If music and the theatre and not your forte, we are also looking for busker performers! Whether your talent is dancing, miming or fire-breathing unicycling, we want you! Register your talent or team at, www.inter-play.ca and successful applicants will be contacted for further information.

And if music, theatre and buskers are not your area of expertise, we’re also looking for volunteers to make this year’s interPLAY the best yet! Volunteers will be needed in all three Keyano Theatres, the KidsPLAY Zone and much more!

Oil Sands Karaoke Screening and Contest Enjoys Success!

“Oil Sands Karaoke” movie documentary screenings and 100.5 K-Rock Karaoke Contest at Bailey’s Pub a huge success 

Fort McMurray, AB. – May 13, 2013 – The much-anticipated documentary “Oil Sands Karaoke” hit the big screen in Fort McMurray on Thursday at the Keyano Theatre and Arts Centre, with additional showings on Friday and Saturday.

“It was great to see so many community members come out to cheer on the performers and film makers in what was a truly a movie that showcased the talent and beauty that our region offers,” said Krista Balsom, Editor of Your McMurray Magazine and Fort McMurray’s Child Magazine. “The remaining screenings were very well attended and the Karaoke Contest hosted by 100.5 K-Rock’s McCully went extremely well.” In support of the film screenings, a karaoke contest took place at Bailey’s Pub at 10:00 PM on Saturday, May 11 and was hosted by 100.5 K-Rock’s Ben McCully, one of the film’s stars.

“Oil Sands Karaoke” is a documentary about five oil patch workers vying to win a karaoke contest in one of the most controversial places on the planet – our home – Northern Alberta’s Oil Sands. A documentary unlike any other, “Oil Sands Karaoke” challenges us to re-examine our biases. 

“Oil Sands Karaoke” is produced by Charles Wilkinson (film director) and Tina Schliessler. The world premiere took place during Hot Docs on April 26 at the Toronto International Film Festival. Hot Docs is the biggest documentary festival in North America.

Alberta honky-tonker Corb Lund returns to Keyano Theatre

Keyano Theatre has just added a concert to the 2012/13 Syncrude Arts Alive Presents series to close the season. 

Corb Lund wowed audiences in December 2011 in the 594 seat main theatre with one of the most celebrated shows of the past few seasons. Alberta-born honky-tonker Corb Lund’s song craft covers it all. Ranging from rockabilly to Western swing, cowboy balladry to country-rock. And, of course, the occasional yodel!

His latest release, Cabin Fever, debuted at No. 1 on the Canadian Billboard top 200 and was nominated for the 2013 Juno Award for roots album of the year.

The highly anticipated return of Corb Lund; the recent recipient of Edmonton’s ATB Financial Ambassador for the Arts Award recipient will take place June 19, 2013 at Keyano Theatre. Landmark Study Sheds Light on Profound Benefits of the Performing Arts

After two years of intensive action research, the value and benefits of performing arts presentation for Canadians are brought to light in a unique report.  This report, released on April 29, 2013,  was commissioned by the Canadian Arts Presenting Association.

According to the CAPACOA news release, the Key Findings in this report are:

• Canadians value the performing arts, with 3 in 4 reporting attending a wide range of live events.
• Canadians volunteer in the performing arts: for each paid staff member, there are 17 volunteers giving their time to performing arts presenting organizations.
• Media viewing of performing arts doesn’t replace live attendance; it supplements it. Canadians are twice as likely to ascribe a high importance to live performing arts attendance than to any media-based viewing.
• Canadians attend events predominantly in specialized performing arts facilities and outdoor venues, and most say these facilities are important to the quality of life in their communities.
• Canadians believe that the presentation of performing arts equally benefits the individual who attends and the community as a whole.
• For Canadians, the highest-rated benefits of the performing arts in their communities are energy and vitality along with improved quality of life, and a more creative community.
• There are more than 1,400 presenting organizations of all types in Canada: volunteer presenters and professionally-run organizations, based in a purpose-built theatre or operating in non-specialized venues, presenting festivals and series of performances, specialized in a single artistic form or presenting several disciplines such as music, theatre, dance, comedy and storytelling.

Call for Local and National Experimental Sound Artists

Deadline for submissions: Friday, March 29th, 2013 by 6:00 pm.

Sounds Like Festival Dates: Thursday, July 25 through Saturday, July 27th, 2013.
Sounds Like invites local, national and international artists to submit proposals for the third iteration of Saskatchewan’s only audio art festival! We are looking for performance- oriented audio art projects that may (or may not) incorporate video projection and/or sculptural components for the third iteration of the Sounds Like Audio Art Festival. 

Selections for the festival will be made by a programming committee comprised of representatives from the three parent organizations: AKA Gallery, Holophon and PAVED Arts. Live performances will be staged in our shared, multipurpose event space at the AKA/PAVED Arts building. Additional installation works may be programmed to occupy surrounding spaces, including but not limited to the main floor gallery spaces, at the discretion of the programming committee. 

Sounds Like showcases contemporary audio art, installation and performance from across the country. Individuals and/or collectives engaged in experimental sound projects are encouraged to apply with sound and video documentation of recent projects relevant to the proposal. In addition please provide a detailed project description, current Curriculum Vitae and any relevant technical details related to staging the proposed works. 

Media Submission Guidelines: 1 to 4 audio/video clips on a CD-R or DVD-R; up to 10 jpeg images (optional), RGB, 1080 x 810 pixels; along with a printed list of submitted works containing relevant details of the support material and/or review instructions.

The Alberta Association of Agricultural Societies would like to invite you to participate in the 2013 Breaking New Ground AAAS Convention & Tradeshow February 1 - 3, 2013.

Participation in the convention provides artists and/or entertainers exposure and booking opportunities to over 600 convention delegates representing over 140 Agricultural Societies and the many events they hold throughout Alberta. Delegates attending the convention are board members, volunteers and community leaders who are key influencer's and decision makers.

Selected Acts will be provided with space to display your communication materials and will receive additional exposure in the delegate package.

Please submit your Showcase Application as soon as possible; all Applications must be received by December 15, 2012. To ensure fair consideration, it is important that all of the materials requested are included with your application.

Please Note: There are 2 stages - each with their own application form. Main stage acts will be selected prior to the Tradeshow stage acts being juried. The Main stage is located in the main plenary area with full backline & sound production - performances are in the evenings. Tradeshow stage acts perform in the tradeshow area with no backline or sound production.
