Call for Submissions-2016 Street Banner Contest

The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo’s Street Banner Contest is back! The theme for the 2016 contest is My Home – Wood Buffalo Landmarks. The Street Banner Contest is a civic beautification program that aims to engage community members, showcase the beauty of the region and highlight local artists. Four designs will be selected by a panel of volunteer judges from the community. Winning artists will be awarded $500, and have their selected artwork displayed on street banners from May 2016 to November 2016.

Last years’ competition had 46 stunning submissions making it a difficult feat for our artist selection panel to choose only four finalists. The four finalists entries, shown above, had their selected artwork displayed on banners throughout the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo in celebration of the 2015 Western Canada Summer Games.
Artists may submit their entry for the 2016 contest from January 6 until 4 p.m. MST to Friday, Feb. 19, 2016. For more information please visit the RMWB website or contact a Community Strategies Coordinator at 780-788-1489 or email beautification@rmwb.ca.

#Throwback Thursday @ Canada's History

If you are an active Twitter or Facebook user, you've probably seen Throwback Thursday photos of your friends from years gone by.  You've probably even posted one of yourself sporting that rat's tail or mullet hair due wearing an acid washed jean jacket and holding a Sony Walkman with your favorite mixed tape inside. Well, Canada's History Magazine has put a twist on Throwback Thursdays using historical photos of Canadian events and places.  Each week, an archival photo is posted on Canada's History Magazine Twitter account and people can tweet an answer.  One person is chosen weekly as the winner and given a free magazine subscription.  When the winner is announced, details of the photo are also released as well as links to events and occurrences that relate to the photo.  The latest Throwback Thursday photo showcased the CANOL Project at Fort Fitzgerald in 1942.  During the Second World War,  a pipeline and road were to be constructed that spanned from Norman Wells, Northwest Territories to Whitehorse, Yukon that would secure an oil supply during the war.

Although an American Initiative, the CANOL Project has its own place in our local history.  In 1942, American soldiers arrived in Waterways by train and established a military base where Keyano College is currently located.  The base, known as The Prairie, extended to the Clearwater River.  This base became a staging ground to support the CANOL project and every available local boat and barge was used to transport cargo and equipment to Norman Wells from The Prairie.

The Throwback Thursday, Canada's History Magazine contest is a really neat way to share history and have fun at the same time.   Follow Canada's History Magazine on twitter for your chance to win a free magazine subscription.  And while your having fun guessing the photo, indulge in the historical information that's presented with each photo from the week prior.

"Shakespeare Selfie" Writing Challenge ends May 9, 2014

April 23, 2014 marked the 450th birthday of William Shakespeare. To celebrate, CBC’s Canada Writes will be holding a national writing challenge and pairing it with a series of original fiction.

Shakespeare used selfies all the time. But instead of a camera, he used a quill. From April 14 to May 9, Canada Writes will be asking Canadians to take a Shakespearean character, situate him or her in a present-day scenario, and write a new soliloquy (a speech in which the character talks to him/herself) or monologue for that character.

What would Hamlet mutter under his breath if he had been dragged to a bad poetry-slam event? What choice bon mots would Caliban unleash after his Plymouth Reliant breaks down on the Trans-Canada? We want to know in this writing challenge. #shakespeareselfie

CHALLENGE DETAILS:

Word count: 200 to 400 words
Challenge open to Canadians aged 12 and over
Submission period: April 14 to May 9, 2014

The New Quarterly Magazine Verse Contest- Deadline March 14, 2014

The Nick Blatchford Occasional Verse Contest: $1 000 for one glorious poem
Sponsored by TNQ editor Kim Jernigan and family in celebration of the man who sparked their love of poetry, this contest is for poems written in response to an occasion, personal or public-poems of gratitude or grief, poems that celebrate or berate, poems that make an occasion of something or simply mark one. We are interested in light verse and in verse more sober, in the whole spectrum of tones and occasions. One of Nick's own poems, which we think captures the broadness of his (and our) sense of 'occasion', is pictured at left. For a bit lengthier background on the genre, you can also turn to Amanda Jernigan's funny and thoughtful essay on poems and occasions, linked below. Both originally appeared in Issue 100 of TNQ.
We will award a grand prize of $1,000 to the poem judged most worthy. Another $1,000 in prize money will be distributed as the judges fancy. However the prize money falls, the best of what we see will be published in The New Quarterly, at our usual rates, and posted on our website.
Entry fee: $40 for up to 2 unpublished poems, $5 each for additional poems. Submissions include a one-year Canadian subscription (or subscription extension) to The New Quarterly and may be accompanied by a brief paragraph describing the event that occasioned the poem.
Eligiblity: Entrants must be Canadian or currently residing in Canada. Entries may not be previously published, accepted, or submitted for publication elsewhere. There are no restrictions on length or number of entries, as long as the appropriate fees are paid. Entrants anonymity will be carefully preserved throughout the judging process. The decisions will be made by August 31; winner(s) and finalists will receive notification by mail.
