Workshop #1
AN INTRODUCTION TO COMMUNITY-BASED RESEARCH AND EVALUATION Sherry Ann Chapman
Assistant Director (Lifelong Learning), Community-University Partnership for the Study of Children, Youth, and Families, Faculty of Extension, University of Alberta
Community-based research & evaluation (CBRE) is becoming an increasingly recognized, interdisciplinary approach to creating and sharing knowledge. This workshop will offer an introduction to CBRE: What is it? How and when to do? We will begin with a discussion of various definitions of CBRE and principles underlying each. We will draw on participants’ experiences and build in time for networking toward potential, future, local CBRE partnerships.

Workshop #2
DIGITAL STORYTELLING WORKSHOP
Carolina Cambre
PhD Student, Educational Policy Studies, University of Alberta
This workshop will explore the art/skill of digital storytelling in two parts. In the first part we will discuss the notion of DS as a tool for research, the rules for creating digital stories (when and why to break them),  and what digital stories may be good for in terms of working through some conceptual aspects of this approach. In the second part we will work through our understanding of the DS process through small group activities.

Workshop #3
SURVEY TECHNIQUES FOR SOCIAL RESEARCH
Daven Seebarran
Executive Director, The Health Promotion Centre – Wood Buffalo HIV AIDS Society
This session will provide participants with some innovative tools and samples of how front-line agencies conduct ethical research to inform programs, determine gaps in services, and produce evidence based approaches.  Participants will learn about surveying techniques, research ethics, and dissemination.

  1. This past weekend I attended the Unwrap the Research conference, it was really great. I learned a lot about the history of our region and some very exciting predictions about our future growth. The conference organizers let those of us in attendance know that their will be many resources from this weekend uploaded to the Conference sight in the near future. So for those of you who were unable to attend you can still get filled in. I will let you know as soon as I do when those resources are available.

On another note, a visual component of the conference was on display in the MacDonald Island main concourse. If you happened through the multiplex on the weekend you may have seen the two visual art exhibitions. These two shows were unrelated in background but the context was the same – representing Fort McMurray. A collection of white framed photographs donned the left side of the atrium; these works were created as part of a collaborative research project facilitated by Andriko Lozowy a young Doctoral Candidate from the University of Alberta. The photographic images were flanked by a series of large, brightly coloured landscape oil paintings by Saint Albert artist, Brenda Kim Christiansen. I took some pictures on my phone, however I’ve forgotten the appropriate cord to transfer them to the computer, so I will add them as soon as I can in a larger more in detail post.

    Cheers,

    Connor
