Nominations Now Open for the Prime Minister's Volunteer Awards!


Do you know an outstanding volunteer? Why not nominate them for a Prime Minister's Volunteer Award?

The Prime Minister’s Volunteer Awards recognize the enormous contributions volunteers, innovative not-for-profit organizations and forward‑thinking businesses make to their communities through voluntary contributions and innovative ideas and approaches to address social challenges. Volunteering, charitable donations and philanthropy all play a key role in helping communities to address these challenges, and these prestigious awards are an opportunity to recognize the tremendous contributions of many Canadians who work together to improve the well-being of families and communities across the country.


The Prime Minister's Volunteer Awards program consists of 17 awards in total, two at the national level and 15 at the regional level. The Awards highlight best practices in community leadership and encourage partnerships across sectors. The goal of the awards is to inspire Canadians from all walks of life to find new ways of making a difference in their communities

The call for nominations  for the Prime Minister's Volunteer Awards is now open! The deadline for submission of nominations is 23:59 (Pacific Time) on May 9, 2014.

Before you submit a nomination, please read Guidelines for Nominators. These guidelines will provide all of the information you need to better understand the nomination process and complete your nomination.

Nominations for 2012 Stars of Alberta Volunteer Awards close September 25


Nominate an outstanding volunteer today!

With the deadline for nominations fast approaching, Albertans are encouraged to help honour exceptional volunteers by submitting their names for the Stars of Alberta Volunteer Awards.

The awards will be handed out at the Stars of Alberta Volunteer Awards gala ceremony on International Volunteer Day, December 5.

Volunteer with Write Break Adult Literacy Program

Write Break Adult Literacy Program is recruiting volunteers from the community to work with adults learners.  The learners are working on basic literacy skills; reading, writing, English as another language. Pairs are asked to commit to 2 hours per week and they meet at Holy Trinity Community School, Keyano College or the Public Library. Training, materials and tutor support are provided for the volunteers.  There is no cost to the learner.

National Volunteer Week April 15-21




April 15 - 21, 2012 is National Volunteer Week.  The Wood Buffalo region will join over 150 communities around Alberta that will pay tribute to community volunteers who graciously donate their time and energy.  National Volunteer Week is Canada's largest celebration of volunteers, volunteerism, and civic participation.

WinterPLAY volunteers accepted donation from the community

Fort McMurray community supports local causes during recent Syncrude winterPLAY Festival

Fort McMurray, AB, March 28, 2012 – During the recent 2012 Syncrude winterPLAY Festival money was raised to support local causes.

Events Wood Buffalo volunteers accepted donations for the Parsons Creek Landing fire victims throughout the winterPLAYGROUND weekend down on the Snye. Local talent putting on the Hot Acts Cool Plays festival also decided to donate any proceeds received from theirperformances. Over $1000 was raised thanks to the generosity of this community and distributed through the United Way. www.fmunitedway.com

Two-legged and four-legged representatives of the Fort McMurray SPCA were at the winterMARKETPLACE where they were able to raise $3680 towards providing shelter, care, nutrition, and love to an annual average of 1,000 abandoned, lost, homeless, and neglected animals in this region. www.fortmcmurrayspca.ca

Through donating their time and energy to tend bar at events throughout 3 weeks of the festival, the Holy Trinity Music Parent’s Association raised $9000 towards the Holy Trinity Band and Choir trip to Orlando, Florida, in May to take part in Magic Days at Walt Disney World.

Knowing of the Fort McMurray Boys and Girls Club need for a new roof, Events Wood Buffalo and YMM Podcast teamed up to auction off a jersey signed by Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Oilers star rookie, via social media on www.ymmpodcast.com. With her winning bid of over $700, which she generously increased to $1000, local Fort McMurray businesswoman Stephanie Lopushinsky took home the jersey. www.fmbgc.ca
