The Post gallery seeking new volunteer Curator and Director

Fort McMurray, AB, June 8, 2012 - Events Wood Buffalo and the Post gallery are saying goodbye and a very big thank you to volunteer Curator/Director, Connor Buchanan. 

After over a year in this position, during which she built the gallery from the ground up, Buchanan is heading overseas to begin an Arts Administration Masters in the Netherlands. “Although I’m hesitant to part with this community, I’m really excited to be taking the next step along my career path as a cultural advocate,” said Buchanan. “I know we have people in this community who have the skills and the passion to keep this vital arts and culture resource available to the community.” 

The Post has decided to divide the current position into two distinct positions – Curator and Director. Both positions will continue to be in a volunteer capacity. Celebrate local art at the Post

You're invited to join the Post gallery in celebrating the talent of local High School art students this Thursday, June 7 at 7:00 p.m. with the opening of QUAD HIGH – a unique exhibition that is an opportunity for art students in our community to collaborate.

This fantastic annual exhibit features students from Composite High School, Father Mercredi Community High School, Holy Trinity Catholic High School, and Westwood Community High School. Introducing works in a variety of media such as painting, drawing, and sculpture, QUAD HIGH will only be on display from June 7 to June 23. Don’t miss out!

Show your support for these talented and creative youth of Fort McMurray, stop by the gallery this Thursday at 7 p.m. to meet and great the fantastic students and instructors behind this exhibition.

Eight is Enough: upcoming exhibit at the Post

The first exhibition at the Post art gallery came to a close on March 31 and since then, the Post's volunteers have been busy preparing for the next show, Eight is Enough, the graduation exhibit of the 2012 Visual Art and Design diploma program at Keyano College. 

This exhibit will feature paintings, drawings, prints and sculptures from the eight graduating students. 

Please come by the gallery between 7 - 9pm on Friday April 13th, 2012 to show your support for our local emerging artists! These folks have worked very hard over the last two years and are eager to share their accomplishments with the community. This is also a great opportunity to purchase some wonderful works of art at 'student' prices - don't miss out on your chance to own an original work of art created right here in Wood Buffalo.

Celebrate An Evening of the Arts with NorthWord at winterPLAY

NorthWord magazine and Events Wood Buffalo cordially invite you to the launch event for our sixth issue, which features a theme of Sin. Celebrate An Evening of the Arts with NorthWord at winterPLAY on Friday, February 24, 2012 at The Post Gallery – in Keyano College.

There will be musicians, readings from authors published in the sixth issue, art and an open microphone, giving everyone a chance to share their inner artist at the free event.

"Events Wood Buffalo is delighted to be part of the launch of NorthWord's latest issue. We're very excited that the launch is happening in the Post, Fort McMurray's new public art gallery, and during the 2012 Syncrude winterPLAY festival. We're very much looking forward to experiencing a 'Sinful' celebration of the arts," said David Whitelock, Executive Director of Events Wood Buffalo.

Jennifer Hemstock, President, Northern Canda Collective Society for Writers (NCCSW), publishers of NorthWord magazine echoed similar sentiments.

“The launch event for our sixth issue is a special one for the NorthWord group. For the first time we are partnering with Events Wood Buffalo and participating in winterPLAY. The Post gallery is the perfect venue for an evening of literature, music and socializing. We hope everyone will join us to celebrate our sixth issue and look forward to the next half dozen,” said Hemstock.

Local writer and blogger Kevin Thornton is the guest editor of this issue, who looks forward to meeting everyone.

Based in Fort McMurray, Alberta the NCCSW publishes NorthWord twice yearly, rotating editors and themes from issue to issue.

The group is now accepting submissions for issue number seven, to be edited by local writer and journalist Kiran Malik-Khan. The theme is Harmony. The deadline is March 30, 2012.

Short stories or excerpts from current projects, fiction or non-fiction (3000 words maximum), verse of no more than 50 lines, along with anything surprising, original, or inventive can be submitted to the editors at northword@hushmail.com.

Introducing the Post, Fort McMurray’s new public art gallery

Fort McMurray, AB, February 8, 2012 - With its opening exhibition happening this month as part of the 2012 Syncrude winterPLAY Festival, Fort McMurray’s newest public art gallery offers an 1100 square foot presentation venue for contemporary art and programming. The opening exhibition is a two-person show featuring works by celebrated Albertan artists, David Janzen and Julian Forrest.

Located in the Keyano Theatre and Arts Centre, the Post is a space meant to foster dialogue, new understandings, and enjoyment in exploring the diversity of contemporary fine art. Part of the gallery’s mandate is to foster support for contemporary artists, as well as offering local artists professional development programming. The gallery will also highlight the work of local art studentsthrough annual projects such as the Tri High Student Exhibit, the Graduation Show of the Keyano Visual Arts diploma program, and A Winter Affair.

Reflecting the diversity of approaches that exist within contemporary art, the Post’s exhibition calendar will offer the Wood Buffalo Region an opportunity to see significant work by established and emerging artists. A diverse array of exhibitions, guided tours, and late night events will be available throughout the year. The Post aims to be a centre of collaboration and exploration for visual arts. Serving both the urban area of Fort McMurray and the rural hamlets of the region, the gallery will host a minimum of six curated exhibitions yearly.

The name and brand of this new gallery speak to our vision of building support and appreciation for the arts. Created by design team Kriza Borromeo and Matthew Kim, the Post’s brand references the history of the Wood Buffalo Region while representing the gallery’s contemporary sensibilities with the circle as a strong icon of completion, connection, and life. The font selected embodiesFort McMurray's youthful and growing community. To reflect the naturally occurring aurora borealis seen here within our northern geography, a bright blue was chosen as a spin on our particular blend of the aurora.

“We wanted a fresh look that captured the youthful and creative community here in Fort McMurray. The branding speaks to our desire to connect with people of all ages. We want to provide new and exciting experiences in an atmosphere that piques the imagination, encourages creativity and critical thinking,” said Connor Buchanan, Volunteer Curator/Director.

The inaugural show will be open to the public as of February 18th. Gallery hours will be dependent on volunteers. Housed within the dynamic, curved lower foyer of the Keyano Theatre and Arts Centre, the Post is a new public art gallery created to engage the community. 

Volunteers needed for local art gallery:The Post is looking for volunteers to cover 2 and 4 hour shifts. Open to the public as of February 18th, the gallery hours will be dependent on volunteers. Volunteers of The Post will receive gallery training and enjoy various professional development opportunities. If you are interested in getting involved, training sessions are being offered within the first two weeks of February. Our first training session will be on February 4th in the Gallery. Registration is required so please email the curator if you are interested in attending.

Volunteering with the Post offers individuals the opportunity to gain hands on experience in many areas of gallery work such as prepatory duties, assisting with the curatorial practices, working directly with artists at various levels of their careers, arts advocacy and writing, program delivery and much more.

The Post: There's a new gallery in town

Gallery Description: 

Over the past six months, Events Wood Buffalo has been in the development stage of a new initiative called the Post. The Post is a public art gallery housed within the curved lower foyer of the Keyano Theatre and Arts Centre. The name for this new gallery alludes the gallery’s goal of becoming a sustainable presence in this community, a presence that helps to foster appreciation and support for the arts.

We hope to operate within the below hours of operations, however we are dependant on volunteers, so please if you are interested in being involved contact the curator via the email below.

Saturdays 10am – 5pm

The development of this gallery has been a collaborative effort and we are always looking for new people to join the Post team. In conjunction with an advisory group Events Wood Buffalo has been working to develop an administrative process and governing documents for the gallery. We are also currently exploring funding opportunities for staffing and programming.

We are still looking for two members for our volunteer advisory group as well as volunteers who are interested in assisting with sitting the gallery so that we may coordinate a regular schedule of hours of operations. Volunteers of the Post will receive gallery training and enjoy various professional development opportunities. If you are interested in volunteering don't miss out on the upcoming training sessions within the first two weeks of February.
