CBC Canada Reads 2013 is Seeking Nominations!

Started in 2001, Canada Reads is CBC's annual battle of the books, where five Canadian personalities each select a book they want Canadians to read. They defend their chosen title in a series of debates, and the books are eliminated one by one until a winner is declared. The debates air on CBC Radio One, CBC TV and are livestreamed online through CBC Books.

New for 2013!!!

"Canada Reads is back for its twelfth season. And this time around, we're doing things differently. Canada Reads 2013 is going back to fiction, but that's not all. This year's battle of the books will be divided along geographical lines. After all, we're one great nation but we also have our local pride.

So we decided to tap into that loyalty to regional roots in order to build this year's Canada Reads book list."

 

How will it work?

We divided Canada into the following five regions. (We wish we could have had more, but only five books can vie for the Canada Reads crown.) Each region will be represented by one book in the debates.

• British Columbia and Yukon
• Prairies and North
• Ontario
• Quebec
• Atlantic Provinces

In order to arrive at a Top 10 list for each region, we are inviting public nominations. You can nominate only one title in each region -- but you needn't be from that region to submit a nomination. You can nominate a book in each of the five regions if you wish.

We will also be mining regional book awards and tapping into avid readers from CBC's team from coast to coast for their recommendations. These lists will be put to a vote and the votes each book will receive will count toward their overall total.

In each region, the 10 books with the most votes will move on to round two. So there will be five Top 10 lists in total. These will be revealed on Wednesday, October 24, on Q and on the Canada Reads website.

Program Description
The Grants for Literary Arts Promotion program provides support to Canadian non-profit arts organizations that increase public awareness of and access to Canadian literature.

The Operating Grants component of the program provides annual and
multi-year funding to established literary organizations that play a major role in fulfilling the program objectives. Annual grants cover a 12-month period, and multi-year grants cover a 24-month period.

Program Objectives
The objectives of this program are to:
increase the promotion of Canadian literary artists (writers, translators, storytellers and literary performance artists)
encourage the development of literature through promotional, networking, professional development and research activities, and

support audience development activities for literature.

Eligibility
If you are applying to this program component for the first time, you must discuss your organization’s eligibility with the Program Officer before submitting an application. To be eligible to apply, your organization must:
- be a Canadian professional organization with a primary mandate in Canadian literary arts promotion
- be an incorporated and non-profit organization
- have a stable, administrative structure that is sufficient to ensure the success of the promotional activities, with a minimum of one paid staff member
- have been in operation for a minimum of five consecutive years
- have an annual program of literary activities in which most of the participating Canadian writers, literary translators or publishers are recognized as professionals, OR host a major annual event¾such as a literary festival or a salon du livre¾in which a majority of the writers or literary translators presented are recognized as professionals
- pay artists’ fees
- have a variety of revenue sources
- generate annual revenues of more than $75,000, including government support, as shown in your organization’s most recent financial statements
- have already received a minimum of three consecutive and recent Canada Council grants for literary arts promotion activities (the funding received must have been for your core activities and have been at least $20,000 in the previous year), and
- be able to submit the required financial statements or a review engagement report for the last fiscal year (as detailed on page 4 of the application form)

Note that meeting the eligibility criteria does not guarantee that you will receive a grant.

Grant Amount
There is no maximum amount that may be requested from the operating grants component of the program. However, the grant amount can be a maximum of
50 percent of your organization’s total revenues.

CADAC Financial Reporting
The Canada Council for the Arts is collecting financial and statistical information through a national online database called CADAC (Canadian Arts Data/Données sur les arts au Canada). This system enables arts organizations applying for operating funding from public funders who are members of CADAC to submit their financial and statistical information in the same format. Previously, applicants to these funders were required to provide the same information in multiple formats on multiple occasions.

The following are member partners: the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, the British Columbia Arts Council, the Canada Council for the Arts, the City of Vancouver, the New Brunswick Department of Wellness, Culture and Sport, the Manitoba Arts Council, the Ontario Arts Council, the Saskatchewan Arts Board and the Toronto Arts Council. Discussions are ongoing with other provincial, territorial and municipal arts funders to encourage them to join the CADAC partnership.

Fiction award contest for emerging Canadian writers

The New Quarterly (TNQ) is a magazine of Canadian fiction, poetry, and conversation, primarily about the writer’s craft.  Their mandate is to nurture emerging writers by publishing and promoting their work alongside that of well-established writers.  TNQ offers a lively mix of fiction, poetry, author interviews, writing techniques and more. 

Currently, TNQ is accepting submissions for the Peter Hinchcliffe Fiction Award.  Sponsored by the St. Jerome’s University English Dept, this award will offer $1000 to the winning story.

This contest is named in honour of Peter Hinchcliffe, who was instrumental in the founding of the magazine and has made an impact in the lives of many students in his longstanding role as lecturer at St. Jerome’s University. 

The $1000 top prize will be awarded for a work of short fiction by a Canadian (citizen or resident) writer who has not yet published a first novel or short story collection.  Though there is only one top prize, all submissions will be considered for paid publication ($250) in the magazine. All submissions will be judged blind.

Entry fee: $40 per submission. Each submission includes a one-year Canadian subscription (or subscription extension) to The New Quarterly

Eligiblity: Submissions must be previously unpublished. Entrants must be Canadian or currently residing in Canada. Writers must be in the early stages. We define a writer in the early stages as someone who has not yet published a first story collection or novel.

There is no word limit. Entrant’s anonymity will be carefully preserved throughout the judging process; please ensure that your name does not appear on your document. Decisions will be made by August 31; finalists will be notified by email.

Fort McMurray Public Library hosts local author Julie Rowe

Author Julie Rowe will provide advice and tips on writing the story you've always wanted to write, but weren't sure how to start or finish. Julie will also talk about the state of publishing today, including self-publishing options and resources. Handouts will be provided and she will hold a prize draw for a unique book cover purse. The book talk is free to attend and starts at 2:30 on the second floor of the library on April 28.

Julie Rowe has been a Fort McMurray resident for 36 years and has two books out ICEBOUND and NORTH OF HEARTBREAK; both available through the library’s e-book collection Overdrive. Her writing has also appeared in several magazines such as Today's Parent, Reader's Digest (Canada), and Canadian Living. She currently facilitates communication workshops at Keyano College. WinterPLAY: Events Feb 24 - 26th

Celebrate An Evening of the Arts with NorthWord at winterPLAY

NorthWord magazine and Events Wood Buffalo cordially invite you to the launch event for our sixth issue, which features a theme of Sin. Celebrate An Evening of the Arts with NorthWord at winterPLAY on Friday, February 24, 2012 at The Post Gallery – in Keyano College.

There will be musicians, readings from authors published in the sixth issue, art and an open microphone, giving everyone a chance to share their inner artist at the free event.

"Events Wood Buffalo is delighted to be part of the launch of NorthWord's latest issue. We're very excited that the launch is happening in the Post, Fort McMurray's new public art gallery, and during the 2012 Syncrude winterPLAY festival. We're very much looking forward to experiencing a 'Sinful' celebration of the arts," said David Whitelock, Executive Director of Events Wood Buffalo.

Jennifer Hemstock, President, Northern Canda Collective Society for Writers (NCCSW), publishers of NorthWord magazine echoed similar sentiments.

“The launch event for our sixth issue is a special one for the NorthWord group. For the first time we are partnering with Events Wood Buffalo and participating in winterPLAY. The Post gallery is the perfect venue for an evening of literature, music and socializing. We hope everyone will join us to celebrate our sixth issue and look forward to the next half dozen,” said Hemstock.

Local writer and blogger Kevin Thornton is the guest editor of this issue, who looks forward to meeting everyone.

Based in Fort McMurray, Alberta the NCCSW publishes NorthWord twice yearly, rotating editors and themes from issue to issue.

The group is now accepting submissions for issue number seven, to be edited by local writer and journalist Kiran Malik-Khan. The theme is Harmony. The deadline is March 30, 2012.

Short stories or excerpts from current projects, fiction or non-fiction (3000 words maximum), verse of no more than 50 lines, along with anything surprising, original, or inventive can be submitted to the editors at northword@hushmail.com.
