Community Calendars

September is the most exciting month for anyone with a passion for stationary and office supplies (some adults are just as passionate about those “back-to-school” sales as the students are) .  However, December presents another opportunity for anyone that craves the freshness of crisp blank pages and the excitement of selecting design: buying a new calendar for the year ahead.

As you start to fill your calendar with appointments and meetings, you could consider looking ahead at local events to ensure you don’t miss anything in the months ahead!

There are a few local organizations that provide lists of upcoming community events.

Arts Council Wood Buffalo: http://www.artscouncilwb.ca/calendar/
This is a listing of events within the arts community, and is colour coded by discipline (ie; performing arts, literary arts, etc)

McMurray All Connected: http://mcmurrayallconnected.ca/calendar/
This community calendar includes a variety of broad, searchable categories (ie; business, seniors, etc)

The Hub: http://www.thehubfrc.ca/index.php/hub-calendar
Have little ones?  Keep them busy all year by finding out what events are taking place at The Hub!

Wood Buffalo Regional Library: http://wbrl.ca/events
The library is not just for books anymore!  Library events include ESL Conversation and craft classes – all free of charge!

GRAFFITI ABATEMENT MURAL PROGRAM 2016

The Bob Lamb Bandstand at Borealis Park will be featured as the host location of the Graffiti Abatement Mural Program (GAMP) this year.  The program was launched in 2012, and aims at exploring urban art in a legal and respectful way and while deterring graffiti. To date, there are 4 murals around the urban service centre of Fort McMurray.

The 2016 Call for Artist is posted here: www.rmwb.ca/murals

The 2012 mural was installed behind Composite High School, by artist Wil Yee (with the help of Composite High students)

The 2013 mural was painted by Toronto artist Uber5000, at Father Turcotte O.M.I School

The 2014 mural was painted by Daniel Kirk and Ivan Ostapenko, it is located on the Beacon Hill pump house.

The 2014 mural was painted by Daniel Kirk and Ivan Ostapenko, it is located at Lions Park.

Artist Daniel J. Kirk States “There are different intents behind different acts of expression, some are rooted in creative forces rather than destructive forces. And, for me, I try to find within myself the ability to create instead of destroy.” While being interviewed during the installation of the 2015 mural at Lions Park.

It’s the creative forces that the RMWB wants to foster in its citizens and residents. The 2016 Graffiti Abatement Mural Program will feature a new Mural & Mentorship Project.  This new project offers a local emerging artist the opportunity to build their portfolio and provides peer learning.  For more details on this program or to view the 2016 Call for Artist – Mentor please check out the RMWB’s Graffiti Abatement Program webpage at www.rmwb.ca/mural  For more information on the Mentee Program, or to view the 2016 Call for Artist – Mentee please visit the Arts Council Wood Buffalo website at http://www.artscouncilwb.ca/call-mentee-applications-graffiti-abatement-mural-mentorship-program/

Great Memories-Inside the Artists' Studio

Last night the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo's Artist in Residency (AIR) program, in partnership with Arts Council Wood Buffalo, hosted Inside the Artist Studio, a free arts workshop featuring the Artists in Residence: Renny Hua, Ruddy Tuneeko, Ruth Perry, and Luke Maddaford

Each artist coordinated an activity, giving the participants the opportunity to learn four different art techniques.

The first activity was taught by Reeny Hua. She showed everyone how to create a layering effect on canvas using masking tape.

Ruth Perry taught the group how to create their own logos and designs that could be transferred onto a t-shirt or any piece of fabric using an iron.

Luke Maddaford followed, teaching the participants how to create their own Zine.

Ruddy Tuneeko finished the evening by showing the group how to create their own sunset landscape.

Diana Moser, Special Projects Coordinator for Arts Council Wood Buffalo, successfully managed the evening, keeping the group on track while maintaining an easy flow between the activities while keeping a relaxed and fun atmosphere.

The participants were a collection of youth and adults who all shared an interest in creativity and art. They filled the room with laughter, made new friends, and thoroughly enjoyed each activity. The workshop allowed hardworking individuals the chance to escape their daily routines and enjoy an evening of creativity in a community setting. Each participant added their own creative flare to their pieces and each work was unique!

The results of the evening could be seen in the smiles of the participants and their creative works of art!

If you would like to participate in any of the upcoming AIR events or to learn more about the Artist in Residency program please visit our website at www.rmwb.ca/AIR or contact Community Strategies Coordinator, Michael Beamish, michael.beamish@rmwb.ca, (780) 788-1498.

Live as an Artist

Some people believe there is no economic value in the arts and becoming an artist, following one’s creative sensibilities, will only end in a life of poverty and struggle. But this negative belief is simply not true seeing as any rewarding career involves struggle and even in some of the most remote places in Canada talented artists are proving that you can make a living from your passion. In Nunavut, like no other place in Canada, the arts are commercially alive, positively impacting the economy, and creating fulltime careers in places where employment can be limited. Nordicity’s (a leading consulting firm specializing in policy, strategy, and economic analysis in the media, creative and information and communications technology sectors) 2010 Economic Impact Study: Nunavut Arts and Crafts Final Report states:

In only the few generations that it has existed, Nunavut’s commercial arts and crafts sector has grown to impressive levels. Through its multiple stages from material supply, to product creation and wholesale and retail distribution, the sector generates a total economic impact of $33.4 million annually, leading to 1,068 full-time equivalent (FTE) jobs – all from a territorial population of 32,558.  However, straight economic metrics such as contribution to gross domestic product and FTEs do not do Nunavut’s arts and crafts sector full justice. Because of the occasional nature of arts and crafts production, it is estimated that roughly 3,000 Nunavut residents earn some income annually from arts sales. These arts sales, which generate in total more than $27 million in direct payment to artists, eventually result in more than $50 million in end consumer sales, with more than $30 million generated through retailers in the rest of Canada (outside of Nunavut) and around the world.

The art industry in Nunavut not only creates jobs but also allows Nunavummiut to express their culture and way of life, creating a cultural bridge to them and the outside world. The report goes on to assert:

Beyond financial impacts, the arts and crafts sector represents a key piece of Nunavut society. Arts and crafts production provides more than direct employment opportunities; it allows Nunavummiut to be both artists and entrepreneurs in a very self-sustaining fashion by literally creating saleable products with materials gathered from the land…Nunavut arts and crafts provide a constantly evolving representation of the land and its people. Nunavut artists continue to use numerous media – sculpture, tapestries, prints, clothing, sketches, traditional crafts and jewelry, to name a few – to express themselves and their lifestyle to the rest of the world. As the territory continues to evolve culturally, art will provide one outlet to express the blending of old and new cultures. With the proper support to provide access to training, materials and markets, Nunavut’s artists will also continue to translate cultural and artistic expression into significant economic benefits.

So if you are a closet artist wishing that you can make a living doing what you love it is possible even in the most remote areas of Canada. There are many municipal, provincial and federal grants and programs available for artists. So what are you waiting for? Take a leap of faith and live the life you want!
If you live in the Wood Buffalo area and you are looking for ways to start your career as an artist but need some assistance, the Community Strategies Coordinators working for the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, are here to help you. You can contact us at recreationandculture@woodbuffalo.ab.ca  or by phone at (780)743-7966.
