Winter Cities Shake Up 2015

This coming January, Edmonton will take its place on the world stage of winter cities as host of the Winter Cities Shake-Up - an international conference on making winter way cooler!  

The Winter Cities Shake-Up (www.wintercitiesconference.com) is an international conference on all the ways we can improve the quality of life in winter cities. It’s an opportunity to share best practices, think outside the box, and network with delegates and speakers from winter cities around the world. The conference will take place January 28 – 30, 2015. It’s also a great occasion to showcase Edmonton’s leading edge winter initiatives: from cold-climate construction to urban planning, and from internationally recognized winter festivals to our city’s award winning WinterCity Strategy. 


What is the Winter Cities Shake-Up?
Winter Cities Shake-Up 2015 is a conference for people who live in winter cities and want to improve their communities’ quality of life year-round, but especially in the winter. For three days in January 2015, international experts in many areas, including designers, artists, and civic leaders, will gather in Edmonton, Canada to present findings and share experiences in one of three areas:

• Winter Fun - there are lots of outdoor activities that can bring in all types of people - even those who think they'd rather hibernate in winter. Find out how to program inviting, accessible activities and try some of them out yourself. 
• Winter Design - explore how we can plan and design our cities so that streets and public places are warmer, more fun and easier to get around in during winter months. 
• Winter Business - from companies that are finding great economic value in locating to a winter city, to how people are marketing the cold season as one of their community's greatest assets, discover how winter economies can hold great untapped potential for urban centres.

Alberta Museums Association Conference

 

There are many things within the museum sector that we do not talk about, and many that we have talked about for years, but have taken little action on. Challenges in museum management and operations — such as financial stability, succession management, deaccessioning, storage and space issues, and dissolution and closure — are often considered too contentious to discuss. There are also the stories that museums do not tell; the artifacts that museums do not display; the multiple viewpoints that are not shared; and the questions asked by the public that museums do not know how to answer. It is about time we face our fears and challenge our perspectives to be courageous leaders capable of making real change in our museums and our communities.

The 2012 AMA Conference will be a catalyst for original research that will bolster the knowledge and skills available to museums in all stages of organizational life as they confront sustainability challenges and start having those crucial conversations that keep our organizations nimble and vital.

National Council on Public History Conference, call for proposals

From April 17 – 20, 2013, the National Council on Public History will meet at the Delta Ottawa City Centre, in the heart of downtown Ottawa, Canada for the National Council on Public History Conference. The program committee invites panel, roundtable, workshop, working groups and individual paper proposals for the conference. The theme is ‘Knowing your Public –The Significance of Audiences in Public hHstory’. Submissions are welcome from all areas of the field, including teaching, museums, archives, heritage management, tourism, consulting, litigation-based research and public service. Proposals may address any area of public history especially submissions which relate to the theme. Sessions are 1.5 hours (working groups may be longer); significant time for audience discussion should be included in every session. Please visit the National Council on Public History website at www.ncph.org for details about submitting your proposal.
The deadline to submit your proposal is July 15, 2012.

Announcement: Art + Law Conference

Those of you who follow us on Twitter and/or Facebook may have already heard of the upcoming Art + Law conference organized by CARFAC National that will be held in Ottawa from June 8-10. From reading our bulletins and Magazine, you would also know that we have been particularly active on the copyright file during the last few years in Canada and internationally, avidly watching, reporting and analysing the developments of C-11. It seemed natural then that we would partner with CARFAC and engage our network and expertise towards the success of the conference, in particular towards the copyright panel. Other topics that will be discussed during the three day event are labour relations and artist’s resale rights, which I am sure will interest many of you out there! As a benefit of your CCA membership, we have made sure that you are eligible to register at the special early bird rate of $75 or $50 for students. Still, if you can’t make it to Ottawa that weekend there are ways to take part in the discussions. Both the copyright and labour relations panels will be open to a live interactive debate where artists and legal experts are invited to contribute questions via twitter at #artlaw. Additionally, CARFAC has launched an exciting contest for emerging artists and law students. Four travel bursaries of up to $500 each will be awarded, two for emerging artists and two for law students. To win, contestants must upload a video to Youtube explaining why CARFAC is important to them. The videos with the most likes as of April 6th will be the winners. Contest Rules: Only emerging artists and law students are eligible. Videos should be on the positive impact of CARFAC’s programs and services on visual artists in Canada. All videos must include CARFAC’s web address. Bursary recipients must attend the Art + Law conference. Only one bursary may be awarded per participant. The amount of the bursary will not exceed the amount of the participant’s travel expenses and conference fee. Annual Museums and The Web conference registration now open

Leading the North

Leading the North is the annual conference hosted by  Northern Alberta Development Council (NADC) and northern municipalities. The 2012 conference, to be hosted in Fort McMurray, January 25 through 27, 2012, follows in the footsteps of the very successful Growing the North Conference held in the County of Grande Prairie, January 2011.

The 2012 conference will once again focus on the economy, and since it is held in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, it will also focus on oil sands, environment and quality of life issues. Planning for the conference is in the process with NADC, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, the Fort McMurray Chamber of Commerce and other partners. While oil sands are always a focus in the Wood Buffalo region, this conference will also focus on all the other things that make the Wood Buffalo region special.

A Conference on Multiculturalism hosted by the Multicultural Association

Multiculturalism: The Contribution of Multi Culture to the Socio-Economic Development and Progress of Fort McMurray; Town Since 1985.

In 1985 the wise men of Fort McMurray crafted the Multicultural Association of Fort McMurray courteously since known as MCA. One of MCA greatest achievements is the ability to contribute to people dialoguing on their culture to make Canada greater pleasant place to live. The partnership of MCA with government on hosting Canada day, among other things brings home the role of bringing nations together as Canadians. Much has happened since then to 2011, 26 years later. To contribute to the debate which Europe and America has dismissed as failure, Multiculturalism, we plan to examine the contributions made by multicultural Association to the community of the Fort McMurray.

Is culture in its diversity preserved in community development in the Wood Buffalo Region?
How can the corporate world foster Multiculturalism as community welfare tool?
The footprints of culture: Developing the children and youth in our community neighbourhood.
