Canadian Conference for the Arts-survey
Foster a national
public dialogue about the importance of arts and culture
The Canadian Conference for the Arts (CCA)
workshop will occur on Wednesday, February 1, 2012 from 3:00-5:00pm at the Kerr
Room, 2nd floor, Prince of Wales Armoury, 1440 108 Ave, Edmonton. The workshop
will be hosted by the Edmonton Arts Council and facilitated by Alain Pineau of
the CCA. The Canadian cultural sector is facing considerable changes in its
operating environment. One of those is an increasingly clear change in the way
the federal government sees its role regarding arts and culture. As some of you
may know, the CCA has learned of the federal government’s decision to put an
end to 45 years of financial support. The
CCA has taken up the challenge of developing a new business model that will
make it financially independent by 2014-15. A Renewed
Mission outlines the CCA as the pan-Canadian alliance linking the arts, culture and heritage
communities. Through research, analyses, and informed public discussions, the
CCA supports the adoption of policies that ensure the vitality of the Canadian
cultural sector and access to culture by all Canadians. The CCA seeks your opinion and input on a set of proposed services and
activities: this will be crucial in the development of a sustainable business
model.
Alain Pineau’s visit is part of a national
tour which will take him to 13 Canadian cities. We encourage all arts and
cultural groups and individuals to attend. The workshop is free but
registration is required. Please visit www.eventbright.ca
Also, there is an online survey that will take 10 minutes to complete and the
information gathered will be crucial in the development of the new CCA business
plan; https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/ConsultationCCA

Canadian Conference of the Arts workshop Feb 1, 2012
Mark your calendar for an important think-tank workshop with Alain Pineau from the Canadian Conference of the Arts.
The workshop will occur on Wednesday, February 1, 2012 from 3:00-5:00pm at the Kerr Room, 2nd floor, Prince of Wales Armoury, 1440 108 Ave, Edmonton. The workshop will be hosted by the Edmonton Arts Council.
The Canadian cultural sector is facing considerable changes in its operating environment. One of those is an increasingly clear change in the way the federal government sees its role regarding arts and culture. Now more than ever before, there is a need for greater cohesion in the arts, culture and heritage sector. This is the message that Alain Pineau, National Director of the Canadian Conference of the Arts is bringing to all of us on February 1
For those who don’t know, the CCA was founded 66 years ago to represent the interests of all Canadian artists and cultural professionals at the federal level. CCA was behind the creation of the Canada Council for the Arts, the federal Act on Status of the Artist, the creation of the Cultural Human Resources Council, to name but a few of its contributions. CCA intervenes regularly on our behalf in front of parliamentary committees and regulatory bodies and it supports cooperative work as in the case of the review of the Copyright Act.
As some of you may know, the CCA has learned of the federal government’s decision to put an end to 45 years of financial support. The Board of the CCA is convinced that, more than ever, there is a need for an overarching cultural organization bringing together all the communities of arts, culture and heritage in
Alain Pineau’s visit is part of a national tour which will take him to 13 cities by the middle of February. Make sure you mark the date of his visit to

A Conference on Multiculturalism hosted by the Multicultural Association
In 1985 the wise men of Fort McMurray crafted the Multicultural Association of Fort McMurray courteously since known as MCA. One of MCA greatest achievements is the ability to contribute to people dialoguing on their culture to make Canada greater pleasant place to live. The partnership of MCA with government on hosting Canada day, among other things brings home the role of bringing nations together as Canadians. Much has happened since then to 2011, 26 years later. To contribute to the debate which Europe and America has dismissed as failure, Multiculturalism, we plan to examine the contributions made by multicultural Association to the community of the Fort McMurray.
Discussion will be centred on:
Is culture in its diversity preserved in community development in the Wood Buffalo Region?
How can the corporate world foster Multiculturalism as community welfare tool?
The footprints of culture: Developing the children and youth in our community neighbourhood.

Wood Buffalo Community Building Project
The University of Waterloo is working with various agencies and groups within the Regional Municipality to build social and non-profit capacity in our region. In a project that is designed to strengthen community empowerment and engagement, the ultimate goal is to enhance our community's capacity to make Wood Buffalo a vibrant place for people to live, work and raise a family.
This unique nation-building enterprise brings together community leaders from both our region and and Waterloo to help each other develop transformational and lasting solutions. While the primary focus is community capacity building through the non-profit sector, the project is designed to respond to emerging needs and opportunities that are identified by the community.
The project is moving forward by offering workshops for local groups. Under the direction of the The Wood Buffalo Community Building Project Steering Committee (made up of local leaders from the nonprofit, government and business sector as well as leaders from Waterloo Region), a series of workshops have been designed to help nonprofits build their capacity.
According to their website, "Capacity building is any activity - such as strategic planning, board development, operational improvements and technology upgrades - that strengthens the ability of a nonprofit to achieve greater performance and impact." No matter where your organization might be, capacity building is a great investment that can improve organizational development and program success dramatically.
UPCOMING WORKSHOPS:

Time: 2:30 - 5:30 pm MT
Location: Reflections, Keyano College 8115 Franklin Ave. Fort McMurray, AB

Public Art Action Forum: A Review
Thanks again to Kristy Trinier for facilitating our afternoon discussion and for her wonderful lecture in the evening. Thank you also to the participants of both sessions held at MacDonald Island park. It was wonderful to hear the discussions around the room and to see the excitement of the participants as Kristy shared her experience, knowledge and personal anecdotes. We are currently working to compile the information that was gathered during the afternoon session for review.
For those of you who were not able to attend yesterday's initiative here is a brief recap of the day's events.
From 2 - 4:30 p.m the Public Art Director of the Edmonton Arts Council, Kristy Trinier facilitated a information session and group discussion centred on Public Art and the various policies and practices of contemporary programs. She started the afternoon with a PowerPoint presentation which gave a descriptive history of Public Art as well as contemporary practices, controversies and related policies. With the conclusion of the presentation the participants formed small groups and discussed questions posed by Kristy. The round table discussions were based on a theme, the whole room was given a theme and then each table a specific questions. The themes and questions progressed each time, building upon the responses of the previous. For example:

The round table discussions were based on a theme, the whole room was given a theme and then each table a specific questions. First Theme: What does our city look like visually right now?
Table 1. What colours/lines/patterns are most visible?
Table 1. What colours/lines/patterns are most visible?
Second Theme: Do you feel and see the culture of your community visually?
Table 1. Does the city visually reflect the people and vitality of our community? If so, how was this connection established? If no, how do you create the connection?

In the room there were seven easels, each easel held a pair of images. Each pair represented two Public Art projects of a similar nature. For example there is an image below of the 'Architecture Pair'. On the left is an image from the Alberta Art Gallery in Edmonton, featuring the creative design of the Randall Stout Architects, Inc. On the right is an image of international artist, Antonia Hirsch's, 'Double Blind' work which is located in Vancouver Community College’s Broadway Campus building. These two images show different ways to engage the interior of a building - for the left project the concept of art was worked into the fabric of the structure, on the rights the work was applied post production in a way that utilizes the space and context of the location. The participants of both the afternoon and evening sessions were given seven tickets each, and were asked to pick one image from each pair that they preferred - dropping their ticket into the envelope below the winning image. Stay tuned - we will tabulate the scores and post the rest of the images on the blog next week. The 7 - 8:30 p.m session was a second presentation from Kristy, elaborating on the content discussed in the afternoon session. The Public Art Action Forum was filled with discussion, debate, questions, and knowledge building.
