Winter Cities Shake Up 2015

This coming January, Edmonton will take its place on the world stage of winter cities as host of the Winter Cities Shake-Up - an international conference on making winter way cooler!  

The Winter Cities Shake-Up (www.wintercitiesconference.com) is an international conference on all the ways we can improve the quality of life in winter cities. It’s an opportunity to share best practices, think outside the box, and network with delegates and speakers from winter cities around the world. The conference will take place January 28 – 30, 2015. It’s also a great occasion to showcase Edmonton’s leading edge winter initiatives: from cold-climate construction to urban planning, and from internationally recognized winter festivals to our city’s award winning WinterCity Strategy. 


What is the Winter Cities Shake-Up?
Winter Cities Shake-Up 2015 is a conference for people who live in winter cities and want to improve their communities’ quality of life year-round, but especially in the winter. For three days in January 2015, international experts in many areas, including designers, artists, and civic leaders, will gather in Edmonton, Canada to present findings and share experiences in one of three areas:

  • Winter Fun - there are lots of outdoor activities that can bring in all types of people - even those who think they'd rather hibernate in winter. Find out how to program inviting, accessible activities and try some of them out yourself. 
  • Winter Design - explore how we can plan and design our cities so that streets and public places are warmer, more fun and easier to get around in during winter months. 
  • Winter Business - from companies that are finding great economic value in locating to a winter city, to how people are marketing the cold season as one of their community's greatest assets, discover how winter economies can hold great untapped potential for urban centres.

Call for Artists-Giants of Edmonton Mural Program

The 2014 Giants of Edmonton Mural project is an art competition open to all artists currently residing in Alberta. 

Capital City Clean Up’s Graffiti Management Program was established in 2008 to reduce the amount of graffiti vandalism in Edmonton. However, it was recognized early on that positive initiatives would be needed to engage the public. In the winter of 2008 CORUS entertainment (630 CHED) approached the City of Edmonton with a concept to promote the Graffiti Management Program (GMP) using a mural program. The Giants of Edmonton Mural program was established as a result of these joint efforts. 

The purpose of the Giants of Edmonton Mural Program is: 

  • To generate awareness and interest in the Graffiti Management Program by the community- at-large. 
  • To illustrate how artwork can create vibrant, safe and inviting urban spaces. 
  • To illustrate how street art can be an alternative to keeping graffiti vandalism off of property. 
  • To engage citizens in the Graffiti Management Program. 
  • To recognize the people, places and things, which make Edmonton great. 

2014 GIANTS – POST-SECONDARY EDUCATION – CONCEPT DESIGN 

The subject of the mural for this proposal will focus on four post-secondary institutions in Edmonton: the University of Alberta, MacEwan University, NAIT, and NorQuest College. 

2014 GIANTS – SITE AND ORIENTATION 

Location for Artwork 

The mural will be located at 12008 121A Street, in Edmonton on the side of a building owned by Panama Enterprises. The City in consultation with the building owner and the artist will determine the exact location of the mural on the building. Art Location The location is suitable for a two-dimensional public artwork. Suggested mediums for the  artwork could include, but are not limited to, photography, tile artwork, mural art, or painting, etc. The finished artwork will be approximately 450 to 500 square feet in size. Proposal submission should be based on this size. As the artwork is to be mounted, the artist is responsible for ensuring that the maximum weight load for the installation is suitable on the building. Proposals must include the medium and application that will be used for the mural.  

Artwork Design Parameters 

The artwork must adhere to the following design parameters: Ensure artwork does not pose a risk of injury to the public (example: sharp points, slip hazards, etc.); Meet fire codes with respect to flammability, etc.; Artwork must be vandal resistant; Artwork must not interfere with the operation and serviceability of the building; Meet all Alberta building code standards.

Natural History Education and Interpretation Program Coordinator

The Community Services Department is seeking an enthusiastic individual to join our dynamic team of programmers and interpreters to be a Program Coordinator at the Muttart Conservatory and John Janzen Nature Centre. This supervisory role will allow you to exercise your knowledge of natural history and education as you will lead these centres in developing and implementing educational programs to engage visitors in learning about horticulture and nature. You will be required to create and coordinate educational programs, hire, train, supervise and provide support to your staff team and liaise with a variety of other City of Edmonton units and staff to ensure these quality programs go off without a hitch.

Some of your exciting responsibilities are to:
-Plan and organize the implementation of education and interpretation programs for the Muttart Conservatory and John Janzen Nature Centre
-Coordinate the development of new programs for the Muttart and John Janzen Nature Centre and in response to changing curriculum, customer requests, and new exhibits
-Recruit, hire, train and supervise program staff and provide support with scheduling, timesheet submission and evaluation
-Liaise with Communications personnel for promotional needs and prepare and submit information for brochures
-Liaise with bookings staff to ensure facilities are booked efficiently and programs are booked correctly. Set up, monitor and evaluate programs in CLASS
-Coordinate supply purchasing for programs at the Muttart and Nature Centre
-Fulfill supervisor roles and responsibilities in the city-wide safety program
-Coordinate and assist with special projects as they relate to education programs
-Represent Education and Interpretation Programs on facility-based committees
-Work collaboratively with other units, including Special Events, Operations and Bookings

Qualifications:
-Degree/diploma in Recreation/Leisure Studies, Education, Science, History, or other related discipline with training in program development
-One year of program delivery experience in an interpretive or recreation environment and at least six months of supervisory experience
-Knowledge of all aspects of program development and delivery including approaches to youth education
-Demonstrated ability and experience necessary to perform supervisory responsibilities
-Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate, and train others
-Solid knowledge of local natural history and/or horticulture
-Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
-Experience using Microsoft Office (Word), Google (Mail, Calendar) and other computer software programs
-Current Standard First Aid and CPR
-Possession of a valid Class 5 Alberta Motor Vehicle Operators License and eligibility to obtain a City driver's permit

Art Gallery of Alberta is Looking for an Executive Director



The Art Gallery of Alberta (AGA) is seeking a highly organized individual for the role of Executive Administrator. This position provides administrative support to the Executive Director / Chief Curator and the AGA Board of Directors as well as to the AGA Curatorial Department.

Responsibilities in the area of administration for the Executive Director / Chief Curator and the AGA Board of Directors include: meeting scheduling and coordination, preparation and distribution of materials and minutes, correspondence and scheduling and Board support and liaison activities.

Responsibilities in the area of administrative support for the AGA Curatorial Department include: the maintenance of exhibition related correspondence, files and schedules; coordinating visiting artists', curators' and staff travel, accommodation and expense reporting; administering invoices, agreements, contracts and fee payments; assisting with the preparation of grant applications, reports and presentations; the facilitation of meetings and minute taking; maintaining mailing and reservation lists. The Executive Administrator will also field public inquiries and correspondence and provide reception duties for the Executive Director / Chief Curator.

QUALIFICATIONS
The successful candidate will possess: a university or college degree, preferably in art history and a minimum of five years of administration experience, preferably in an arts or related cultural institution. The successful candidate must be highly organized with a demonstrated ability to effectively prioritize workflow. Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills are required, as well as an ability to exercise independent judgment, show initiative, maintain confidentiality and be proactive in the work place. Experience with the Microsoft Office suite of programs (Excel, Word, Power Point and MS Outlook) is required.

This is a full-time permanent position. A competitive compensation package, including extended health benefits, is offered.

Student Intern Opportunity with Fringe Theatre Adventures


The Student Intern – Events and Programs supports Fringe Theatre Adventures with event and program planning and implementation for the Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival. This position provides direct support to the Development Coordinator. 

Responsibilities Events: 
Assist the Development Coordinator with the planning and implementation of a variety of Festival events and activities including but not limited to the VIP Sponsor Event, Opening/Closing Night Festivities, Fire Night Fundraiser 
Work with the Development Coordinator to support the Volunteer department’s Fringe Buck Raffle 
Work on event organization, set up and dismantle logistics Liaise between FTA departments as required 
Attend and contribute to cross-functional Festival planning meetings 

Programs: 
Assist the Development Coordinator with the Official Fringe Establishment Program (OFEP), Festival Membership Campaign (FMC)/Fan Club and sponsorship activities which activate out of the Community Gazebo during Festival 
Student Intern activities in support of OFEP may include business visits, delivery of packages and materials, collecting ad submissions, distribution of point of purchase materials, coordinating program information on the website, assisting the Development Coordinator as a staff liaison with volunteer team in the Gazebo during the Festival, etc.
 FMC/Fan Club support may include assembling membership packages, assisting with tracking and implementation of program, liaising with the volunteer team in the Gazebo during the Festival, etc.

Other: 
Support the Development department team in the distribution and coordination of Sponsor Passes and information leading up to the Festival, as well as, with logistical support as needed for Sponsor Events during the Festival.
Act as a secondary staff resource to support the Development Coordinator with interactions with the Community Engagement Team and Friendraisers Team, leading up to, and during, the Festival. 

Qualifications/Skills and Proficiencies:
Successful candidate will be a student pursuing a college, technical or university diploma/degree in a related field such as Business Administration, Arts and Culture, Communications, Development, Special Event Planning, etc.
Excellent organizational and time management skills; able to prioritize and multi-task in a fast-paced environment 
Ability to work independently and as part of a team 
High degree of maturity and sense of responsibility as this position is a critical support to the success of the Festival 
Outgoing and personable; ability to work with people from all walks of life 
Strong verbal and written communication skills

This position is part of the Marketing and Communications team that gets the word out that the AGA is an art museum of national significance for our city and province. The Communications Coordinator will continue to build and sustain a positive profile for the AGA through media relations, internal and external communications and social media. Qualifications

City Museum Strategy Coordinator Job Opportunity

Reporting to the Program & Operations Manager, the City Museum Strategy Coordinator (CMSC) will: 

- Lead the development of elements for the Edmonton Museums Strategy in relation to city museum development and related programming (Edmonton City as Museum Project) 
- Administer Edmonton City as Museum initiatives and projects including communicating with the steering committee, stakeholders and the public; as well as coordinating this work with other EHC staff on related initiatives (e.g. www.edmontonheritagenetwork.ca) 
- Collaborate with other stakeholders, the public and with EHC staff to identify and develop program opportunities and initiatives that will result in efficient and consistent direction for the Edmonton Museums Strategy. 

Qualifications: 

- Post secondary degree(s) relevant to museum development, public programming or a related field 
- Minimum three years experience in a professional role related to museum development, project management or public programming 
- Effective communicator with excellent written and speaking ability 
- Understands the conceptual and effective use of web-based social media 
- Able to plan and make decisions in a timely manner 
- Able to work effectively within a team as well as independently 
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines 
- Strong working knowledge of MS Office (Mac OS X) 
- Strength in working with program budgets 
- Proficiency in a language other than English an asset 
- Familiarity and appreciation of Edmonton’s heritage activities and events is an asset

Employment Term: 
18 month term with likelihood of extension and continuing contract

Edmonton Exhibition and Events Assistant Opportunity




The Exhibition and Event Assistant provides support with coordinating exhibitions, workshops and speaker lectures for the Alberta Society of Artists in the Edmonton area. This casual position would require the successful candidate to have a flexible schedule in which he or she would be available to work shifts weekdays, weekends and/or evenings on occasion. The Exhibition and Event Assistant would work with the ASA Program Coordinator who is located in Calgary and be a liaison to help administer the opening, maintenance and closure of ASA activities in Edmonton.  

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: 
Be the onsite ASA contact for the receipt, delivery, and shipping of artwork at the ASA storage location (Harcourt House) in Edmonton;
Ensure artwork is adequately wrapped for shipping
Transports artwork to and from exhibition sites; 
ASA volunteers will be arranged to assist the successful candidate with larger shows
Assist with the installation and take down of ASA exhibitions Act as the liaison with gallery partners in Edmonton on behalf of the ASA Program Coordinator 
Organize receptions for exhibitions Provide assistance with other Edmonton events held by the ASA; this could include an ASA volunteer luncheon, workshop and/or speaker events put on by the ASA and open to the public 
Gallery guide when required; this would include providing security, hosting, and information about the artists, art and/or ASA to visitors, coordinating occasional sales to the public Introduce workshop and speakers to participants, provide ongoing support to speakers and workshop leaders throughout their presentations 

QUALIFICATIONS: 
Experience in non-profit is not essential but would be beneficial 
Experience in gallery and art event management 
Skilled in organizing and coordinating events and occasionally volunteers
Knowledge of and interested in Alberta Visual arts 
Able to manage time effectively and efficiently

The Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village is looking for an Assistant Curator

The Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village anticipates hiring into the following position for the summer of 2014:

Do you have an interest in the material culture represented at historic sites and enjoy artifact research and computer data entry? 

The Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village is currently recruiting for a temporary wage position. Reporting to the Curator, the Assistant Curator will enter Materials History information in the collections database for artifacts that are required as furnishings in historic buildings and will identify artifacts in the collection that meet the identified furnishing needs. 

The Assistant Curator will also conduct artifact specific research, as required, aimed at sourcing and recommending artifacts as furnishings or prototypes for reproduction. This position may also include other curatorial work such as moving artifacts, accessioning new acquisitions and other related duties. Focus will be directed toward work at the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village but may include projects relating to other provincial historic sites.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated an attention to detail and will have experience in the proper care and handling of artifacts. 

Qualifications: 
-Post-Secondary degree or certificate in a related field. 
-Experience in database entry, materials history research and the proper care and handling of artifacts is required. 

The primary work location will be at the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village (located 55 km east of Edmonton along Hwy. 16). This position may be required to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends.

This position requires the flexibility to work day, evening, weekend and statutory holiday shifts as hours of work may vary. Heritage Interpreters must have full-time availability up to 36.25 hours per week.

Job Posting at the Provincial Archives of Alberta

Conservator (Contract), Archives Store and Client Services Needed at the Provincial Archives of Alberta

As part of the Provincial Archives of Alberta’s aim to help Albertans preserve their documentary heritage, the Archives Store and Client Services (ASCS) provides conservation services to public clients on a cost-recovery basis. Projects may include privately-owned collections or those held by other institutions. The Archives Store and Client Services seeks individuals to provide conservation treatment and preventive collections care on a contract basis at the Provincial Archives of Alberta (PAA) in Edmonton.

This position reports to the Business Manager, ASCS, and works in collaboration with the other contract ASCS Conservator as well as staff of the Provincial Archives to provide high-quality conservation services. The responsibilities of the position include:

• Providing condition assessments and treatment proposals for client approval;
• Providing accurate cost estimates for completion of treatment recommendations;
• Completing conservation treatments according to the ethics of CAC/CAPC (2000);
• Completing photographic and narrative documentation of treatments;
• Preparing completed projects for pick-up or delivery;
• Maintaining appropriate workspace cleanliness and organization;
• Tracking supply inventory for the conservation service.

All work is project-based, at an hourly rate of $27.50, with tools and materials supplied by the ASCS. Condition assessments and completion of treatment-related duties are included in each project estimate.

Call for Submissions: The Artisan Nook, Edmonton



Submission Deadline: September 30, 2013 No application fee.

The Artisan Nook is accepting submissions for a holiday-themed exhibition for the period of November 15, 2013 to January 15, 2014. Artists who craft small, artistic objects are invited to submit exhibition proposals. The Artisan Nook showcases the exploration of artistic ideas and innovative processes in artisanal, hands-on mediums. Objects woven, printed, painted, carved or otherwise shaped, coloured or created by the artisan are welcome for display. The Artisan Nook is located in The Paint Spot in the Old Strathcona district of Edmonton.

Please include in your application:

  • Resume/CV, artist statement and project description/proposal
  • 5 colour images of your work on CD or by email

ACC Discovery Gallery Call for Proposals- Annual Submission Deadline: August 31

The Discovery Gallery is dedicated to showcasing new work by established and emerging craft artists and small group exhibitions. The 415 square foot space is located on the main level of the Edmonton location and features 7+ exhibitions a year.

2012 Material Culture Institute Symposium in Edmonton

The 2012 Material Culture Institute Symposium will take place at the University of Alberta on May 4, 2012.  The Symposium will address fascinating issues related to the material culture of (dis)ability, including museum experiences and other.

Theatre Alberta Hiring Summer Staff Position: Dramaworks Registrar

Every second summer at Theatre Alberta, one die-hard theatre devotee processes Dramaworks applications from all over the province. The ideal candidate for this position is enthusiastic about theatre, enjoys dealing with people, and is able to work independently and as a team player.

This position offers 13 weeks of full time employment. Employment to begin May 7, 2012. Preference will be given to full time, post-secondary student applicants.

Excellent computer skills, especially data entry experience, and event management experience will be considered assets. Interested individuals must be available to work onsite at Dramaworks at the University of Alberta from July 2 until July 8 inclusive. The remainder of the employment period will be at Theatre Alberta’s office in Edmonton.
