Art Gallery of Alberta is Looking for an Executive Director

The Art Gallery of Alberta (AGA) is seeking a highly organized individual for the role of Executive Administrator. This position provides administrative support to the Executive Director / Chief Curator and the AGA Board of Directors as well as to the AGA Curatorial Department.

Responsibilities in the area of administration for the Executive Director / Chief Curator and the AGA Board of Directors include: meeting scheduling and coordination, preparation and distribution of materials and minutes, correspondence and scheduling and Board support and liaison activities.

Responsibilities in the area of administrative support for the AGA Curatorial Department include: the maintenance of exhibition related correspondence, files and schedules; coordinating visiting artists', curators' and staff travel, accommodation and expense reporting; administering invoices, agreements, contracts and fee payments; assisting with the preparation of grant applications, reports and presentations; the facilitation of meetings and minute taking; maintaining mailing and reservation lists. The Executive Administrator will also field public inquiries and correspondence and provide reception duties for the Executive Director / Chief Curator.

QUALIFICATIONS
The successful candidate will possess: a university or college degree, preferably in art history and a minimum of five years of administration experience, preferably in an arts or related cultural institution. The successful candidate must be highly organized with a demonstrated ability to effectively prioritize workflow. Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills are required, as well as an ability to exercise independent judgment, show initiative, maintain confidentiality and be proactive in the work place. Experience with the Microsoft Office suite of programs (Excel, Word, Power Point and MS Outlook) is required.

This is a full-time permanent position. A competitive compensation package, including extended health benefits, is offered.

Art Gallery of Alberta Looking for a Graphic Designer

The Art Gallery of Alberta (AGA) has a great opportunity for a graphic designer with strong print and online design experience, along with conceptual and art direction skills to join its Marketing and Communications team. This exciting position is responsible for the creation and production of print and digital marketing collateral and advertising. As part of the Marketing and Communications team, the Graphic Designer contributes to conceptualization of advertising campaigns, ensures brand consistency in visual materials and supports design requirements across AGA departments. In addition to a portfolio of great work, the successful candidate will be highly organized with a proven ability to work independently, deliver on deadline and manage multiple projects at one time. Experience working within arts and culture is an asset.

Duties and Responsibilities

Print design: ads, brochures, posters, multi-page documents, signage, invitations and e-vites
Print production: securing quotes, liaising with printers, ensuring files are properly prepared for output to print
Design for online marketing campaigns and e-vites
Creating identities for public programs and events
Digital asset management
Presentation of concepts
Assess and apply brand standards and guidelines
Working collaboratively with Digital Media Coordinator and Curatorial Designer to ensure consistent presentation of design throughout the AGA and its communications platforms
Other duties as required
Qualifications

An applicable diploma or degree in Design and Visual Communications
3-5 years experience in a similar role
Strong organizational and project management skills
Experience working with printers and other suppliers, including large format signage and vinyl output
Strong knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite for design and production including Photoshop, illustrator and InDesign
Photography
Well developed verbal and visual presentation and communication skills
Strong interest in the visual arts and experience working or volunteering in the arts is desirable

Job Opportunity with the Art Gallery of Alberta

The Art Gallery of Alberta (AGA) is seeking an outgoing and highly motivated individual for the role of Communications Coordinator. This position is part of the Marketing and Communications team that gets the word out that the AGA is an art museum of national significance for our city and province. The Communications Coordinator will continue to build and sustain a positive profile for the AGA through media relations, internal and external communications and social media. They will establish relationships with key community stakeholders, identifying and leveraging opportunities to enhance the Gallery’s visibility within the national and international arts community.

The Communications Coordinator works to create and maintain buzz about the AGA and its vibrant and diverse exhibition, public and education programming. This position liaises with all Departments in order to gain an understanding of the AGA’s strategic and programming objectives, and effectively develop internal and external communications, including newsletters, staff briefs, website content, social media content, etc.

Qualifications

A degree in Journalism, Public Relations, or other related discipline, along with at least three years of related experience in a communications/media relations position is required; an Art History background and experience in the visual arts or non-profit sector are highly desirable 
Excellent verbal communication, writing/editing, organizational and interpersonal skills 
Knowledge of the functioning of the news media and experience in working effectively with reporters and editors 
Ability to communicate effectively with visual arts experts, as well as general-interest media 
Ability to work independently and as part of a team and to respond to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment 
A proven track record of establishing and meeting deadlines 
Excellent computer skills in Word, Outlook, PowerPoint and Excel 
Demonstrated knowledge of social media and an understanding of Web-based writing and communications

Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and Art Gallery of Alberta coming to Wood Buffalo

Wood Buffalo attracts world-class music & art event

Fort McMurray, AB – March 28, 2012) – The Edmonton Symphony Orchestra (ESO) and the Art Gallery of Alberta (AGA) will put on a marquee cultural event at the Suncor Community Leisure Centre at McDonald Island Park on June 3, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo announced today. 

The ESO will perform A Tribute to Ray Charles, a full-orchestra production of music from the R&B legend, with vocalist and Ray Charles protégé Ellis Hall. The AGA will showcase its touring exhibit About Face, featuring 17 two-dimensional framed works that examine questions of identity from the perspective of First Nations artists.  Drawn from the collection of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, this exhibition features artworks by First Nations artists Terrance Houle, Alex Janvier, Duane Linklater, George Littlechild, Frederick McDonald, April Mercredi, Henry Nanooch, and Pat Nokomis.

“This is a huge event for all of Wood Buffalo to participate in and we are very excited to be a part of the planning,” said Carol Theberge, Executive Director of Community Development. “This collaboration also increases the potential for future endeavours between Edmonton and Wood Buffalo.

“We are pleased to collaborate with City Lumber, Syncrude, WorleyParsons Canada and Enbridge to develop this signature arts event to attract the participation of youth, the arts community and residents, as well as promote local cultural development.”

This occasion will help realize three objectives of the Municipal Development Plan, namely creating a vibrant culture, working together, and creating a sense of home and belonging.

Public Art Lecture Series :: Art Gallery of Alberta

Presented by the Art Gallery of Alberta with support from the Edmonton Arts Council.

This ongoing lecture series features artists and curators who are contributing to public art in the city of Edmonton. Speakers will provide an overview of their practice, as well as give insight into their work in this region.

Public art is considered a key component of the attractiveness and identity of a city. It demonstrates the character of communities, strengthens the local economy through an investment in the arts, and is a reflection of a progressive municipality.

Urban Revitalization: Public Art and the Quarters Downtown with Kendal Henry

Kendal Henry is a public art curator leading the vision and planning for a transitory art exhibition in The Quarters during the summer of 2012. This project will address the changes occurring as the downtown east undergoes an urban regeneration project to develop The Quarters neighbourhood

ATB Financial Young Artists Competition - Grade 4

ATB Financial is pleased to announce the second annual ATB Financial Young Artists Competition. As part of our continuing partnership with the Art Gallery of Alberta (AGA), we’re once again looking for creative Grade 4 students across the province to tell Alberta’s stories through art. Last year’s competition was an overwhelming success, but we know that there are still stories out there waiting to be told.

Connecting to multiple areas of Alberta Education’s Grade 4 Programs of Study, including Language Arts, Social Studies and Visual Arts, we want students to create original artwork and share these stories, building a visual tapestry of our province’s history.

We are looking for expressive, imaginative artworks that showcase the multifaceted viewpoints of our Alberta narrative. Entries must be submitted by a Grade 4 teacher. The AGA and ATB Financial will select 30 winning submissions which will be professionally framed and featured in the spring of 2012 in an exhibition at the AGA in Edmonton.

Artwork will be accepted beginning February 27th, 2012 and the submission deadline is March 23rd, 2012. No late entries will be accepted. Winners will be notified by May 1st, 2012. All entries must be submitted by a Grade 4 teacher. Home-schooled students currently working on the Grade 4 curriculum are welcome to submit.
