Wood Buffalo Community Building Project

The University of Waterloo is working with various agencies and groups within the Regional Municipality to build social and non-profit capacity in our region. In a project that is designed to strengthen community empowerment and engagement, the ultimate goal is to enhance our community's capacity to make Wood Buffalo a vibrant place for people to live, work and raise a family.

This unique nation-building enterprise brings together community leaders from both our region and and Waterloo to help each other develop transformational and lasting solutions. While the primary focus is community capacity building through the non-profit sector, the project is designed to respond to emerging needs and opportunities that are identified by the community.

The project is moving forward by offering workshops for local groups. Under the direction of the The Wood Buffalo Community Building Project Steering Committee (made up of local leaders from the nonprofit, government and business sector as well as leaders from Waterloo Region), a series of workshops have been designed to help nonprofits build their capacity.

According to their website, "Capacity building is any activity - such as strategic planning, board development, operational improvements and technology upgrades - that strengthens the ability of a nonprofit to achieve greater performance and impact." No matter where your organization might be, capacity building is a great investment that can improve organizational development and program success dramatically.

Acrylic Landscape Painting with Margaret Sonnenberg:
Tuesday's starting September 27th to November 1st, 2011 6:30-8:30pm

Artist Bio:
Born and raised in southern Alberta, the move in 1990 to Fort McMurray opened a door for me to enjoy the beauty of the fragile and pristine Boreal forest. Quietly exploring the rivers and lakes in a canoe or solo in a kayak... my husband and I see beautiful secluded waters seldom seen. This is a powerful experience. For me, these moments build a strong connection to the water, the air, and the land. It is these moments I want to share. It is this beauty I try to capture in paint. I attended the fine arts program in Red Deer College and then along with my husband raised a family in Fort McMurray. After the kids were independent I worked outside the home for eight years and then decided painting would become my focus once again. Each painting has a story, mine in the telling but more importantly yours in the seeing. The intention of each painting is to bring its audience a little mystery and a bit of magic and a sense of contentment.

Workshop Information:
Participants of this introductory level studio workshop will learn about the basics about the acrylic medium, color theory, mixing colors, composition and the various step of executing a painting from start to finish. Durban International Film Festival Audience Award for TFG

The First Grader, co-produced by Durban-based, Videovision Entertainment, won the coveted Audience Award at the 32nd Durban International Film Festival it was announced at the Festival’s awards ceremony. The film had its South African premiere on Sunday (24 July) at the Festival with actors Oliver Litondo and Tony Kgoroge, Executive Producer Anant Singh and Guest Of Honour, Minister of Arts and Culture, Mr Paul Mashatile in attendance.

The Audience Award at the Durban International Film Festival is further recognition for The First Grader which has won awards at top international films since it debuted at the Telluride Film Festival. Among the awards won by The First Grader are: The DGB Trade Union Award - Audience Choice and The Bernhard Wicki Award - Best Film at the Emden International Film Festival; the Audience Award: Best Feature Film and Director’s Choice Award: Best Feature Film at the Sedona International Film Festival; the Audience Award at the Doha Tribeca Film Festival and the Pan African Film Festival; Best Film at the Palm Beach Film Festival and was runner-up to The King’s Speech for the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival.

The First Grader has also received endorsements from former United Nations Secretary General, Kofi Annan and Whoopi Goldberg. Annan said, “The First Grader is inspirational and proves the old adage that one is never too old to learn,” while Goldberg commented, “A great movie. Brilliantly done. Fantastic! Run - do not walk - and go see this film.”

The First Grader, based on a true story, is set in a remote primary school in the Kenyan bush where hundreds of children are jostling for a chance for the free education promised by the new Kenyan government. One new applicant causes astonishment when he knocks on the door of the school. He is Maruge, an old Mau Mau veteran in his eighties, who is desperate to learn to read at this late stage of his life. He fought for the liberation of his country and now feels he must have the chance of an education so long denied - even if it means sitting in a classroom alongside six-year-olds. Moved by his passionate plea, head teacher Jane Obinchu, supports his struggle to gain admission and together they face fierce opposition from parents and officials who don’t want to waste a precious school place on such an old man.

“We are delighted that that audience once again reacted so positively, especially at the premiere screening at the Durban International Film Festival,” said Anant Singh. “We are also delighted to have launched the film at the Festival and to continue our association and support for the Festival for the 25 years.” added Singh.

Director, Justin Chadwick commented, “Winning the Audience Award in Durban is brilliant news, especially for its forthcoming opening in South Africa. Wish I was there to share in this excitement.”

The First Grader will be released at cinemas nationally on 23 September 2011 by Videovision Entertainment through United International Pictures (South Africa).

The First Grader is a BBC Films and UK Film Council production in association with Videovision Entertainment, Lipsync and ARTE France. It is a Sixth Sense / Origin Pictures production directed by Justin Chadwick and stars Naomie Harris, Oliver Litondo, Vusi Kunene, Tony Kgoroge and David Chege. The First Grader

Happy Monday, I just wanted to give you all bit more information about an amazing film that will be screened this week in town as part of the new community initiative - Reel Performances.

About THE FIRST GRADER:
In a small, remote, mountaintop primary school in the Kenyan bush, hundreds of children are jostling for a chance for the free education newly promised by the Kenyan government. One applicant causes astonishment when he knocks on the door of the school. He is Maruge (Oliver Litondo), an old Mau Mau veteran in his 80s, who is desperate to learn to read at this late stage of his life. He fought for the liberation of his country and now feels he must have the chance at the education so long denied—even if it means sitting in a classroom alongside six-year-old children.

Reprieve announced for the Aurora Children’s & Youth Choir

Fort McMurray's only community choir for kids is back up and offering programs as scheduled. Previously, difficulties securing space with either equipment or storage for equipment proved overwhelmingly difficult. Now, the problems have been solved and kids can continue to register for this unique Fort McMurray ensemble.

The group's President, Murray Torguson, say that "the problem that caused us to temporarily shut down was really one of logistics." The municipality's shared use program lets us use a school's space but not their equipment. It is an understandable precaution against damage and liability claims. We have our own equipment in storage but it is logistically awkward to haul a piano, for example, back and forth. Fortunately, some creative thinking, and discussions with stakeholders resulted in solutions such as small pico-projectors and 3G technology. Torguson says "it’s amazing what you can do with an iPhone these days!"

Mr.Torguson goes on to say that he's happy the choir can continue. Without the choir, there is a real gap for kids between 5 and 18. While there are some new options for 12-18's, they involve dance and drama that some kids are not interested in.. Choir gives kids the option to sing in public but not have to stand out if they don't want to. We plan to phone those parents who had already registered to give them the happy news!

The choir’s Music Director is thrilled she can continue working with the kids. "I was really depressed at the thought of having to quit. I had rehearsals planned to January and some cool new resources I wanted to share with the kids, lots of pop music included this year. I really love seeing how the kids grow and develop through the year. It's hard to let that go." Joanna notes that the choir has constantly updated its programs throughout the years to better serve its clientele. "We started with 8-15 year olds and now encompass a much larger span of ages. It stands to reason that we also need to update our program and materials for the different age groups."

Rehearsals will be at Westview School on Wolverine Drive as previously announce and will take place Monday and Tuesday evenings. Registrations can be made online or in person on rehearsal night. The choir is hoping to begin September 12th but this is not yet confirmed. Please check the choir’s website for the most up-to-date information.
