Wanda Carroll presents: The Road Less Gravelled
The Road Less Gravelled is a series of funny stories about growing up in a small, remote outport in Northern Newfoundland in the 1970s. The outports (fishing communities) are being modernized during this time. A new grovel road connects Conche to the outside world for the very first time and so the old ways are being left behind. "The Road" in many ways is a history of that time. The stories are woven together to chronicle the live of Wanda Carroll growing up in Conche; as one world is lost to her another is just beyond her reach. Wanda shares her excitement at seeing her bathroom in "The Bat'room Story," and her love for the CBC in "I loves the CBC," and her disappointment in her first encounter with exotic fruit in "The Protestant Pineapple."

Call for Family Friendly Performers
The HUB has started planning the 3rd annual June Bug Children’s Festival for The HUB Family Resource Centre. This event is the Resource Centre's main fundraiser.

Macbeth in Review
I had the privilege of attending the Aquila Theatre production of Macbeth on the weekend. As I reflect on my experience, I am completely in awe of the commitment the actors have to their roles. The old English grammar was wonderfully presented. I was glad to have had some exposure to old English in my studies, as otherwise it may have been difficult to follow.
The lighting effects were well done as they set the stage by replacing multiple props. With the absence of cumbersome props, the focus was truly on the actors and their dialogue. The simplistic costumes were ideal and reflective of the times without being overpowering.
A familiarity with Macbeth was crucial to the enjoyment of this production. Without this prior knowledge, it may have been hard understanding the underlying themes.
This production of Macbeth was put on by TELUS, Keyano Theatre Company, and Aquila Theatre. There were five show times for this production between November 24 and 27.
Aquila Theatre was founded in 1991 by Peter Meineck and has been based in New York since 1999. Currently they are touring with two productions: Macbeth and The Importance of Being Earnest. The production of Macbeth at the Keyano Theatre was the only Canadian stop for their tour.

Auditions for: The Farnsworth Invention
Two ambitious visionaries race against each other to introduce to the world a revolutionary new device called "television." By the fall of 1921, an Idaho farm boy had drawn a diagram of an "image dissector tube" for a prototype television system. As he seeks to develop a functioning machine, he is swept into a epic struggle with an enterprising media mogul who foresees the lucrative potential of this invention. Only one man will unlock the key to the greatest innovation of the 20th century and rule the airwaves.

Vinok Worldance Festive lineup confirmed
Vinok Worldance has confirmed its lineup of song-and-dance numbers in its highly-acclaimed, production Christmas Around the World. The six-night Yuletide extravaganza of international dance takes place Nov. 15-20 in the Grand Ballroom of the Chateau Louis Hotel & Conference Centre (11727 Kingsway).
This year’s version of Christmas Around the World will feature nine dancers, six musicians and three singers hitting the stage with their rendition of dances and music including repertoire from Bulgarian, Chinese, Dutch, Greek, Hungarian, Irish, Portuguese, Romanian, Turkish and Ukrainian cultures. Actor-writer-singer Timothy Anderson returns by popular demand to host the proceedings with his patented wit and penchant for profound food for thought.
For shows taking place Nov. 15-17, tickets are $70 plus GST, with buffet service starting at 5:30 p.m., followed by the show at 7 p.m. Performances on Nov. 18 & 19 are $75 plus GST and start with buffet at 6 p.m. and the show taking place at 7:30 pm. Also at $75 is the Sunday brunch affair, with buffet at 11:30 a.m. and the show starting at 1 p.m. Children’s tickets are also available for $39 plus GST for each performance. Those booking for groups of 20 or more will receive a 10 per cent discount on adult tickets.
Vinok has also announced that Early Bird tickets for Mardi Gras, taking place Feb. 18, 2012, will be on sale for a 10 per cent discount during the run of Christmas Around the World.

Host Bridget Ryan will visit with Vinok Wednesday, Nov. 16 at 7 a.m. and provide a preview of what’s in store for the Yuletide tribute. Vinok is also slated to preview a couple of the routines that will be in the show.

Eye Flower Productions debuts Legion Blues
Local theatre company Eye Flower Productions debuts Legion Blues, a Remembrance Day play staged in the intimacy of a living room. The show will play over three nights on the Remembrance Day long weekend, November 10th -12th at 8 p.m.
Legion Blues is an original play written and directed by local artist Michael Beamish. Set in the early 1950s, Legion Blues explores the issue of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), a condition experienced behind the closed doors of many Canadian households following WWII- a topic poignantly relevant today as Canadian soldiers return home from Afghanistan.
Legion Blues contains scenes of violence and domestic abuse. “I intend to give the audience an intense and raw theatre experience where they are confronted with the horrors of PTSD. So I am setting the play in my kitchen and putting the audience in my living room,” says Beamish.
Previously produced in Vancouver, Edmonton, and Swift Current, this will be Eye Flower Productions’ debut showing of Legion Blues in Fort McMurray. Eye Flower Productions is a professional theatre company dedicated to producing indie theatre.

Legion Blues is written and directed by Michael Beamish and stars Rebecca John, Murray Cullen, and Francis Mennigke. Fight choreography by Nathan Loitz.
Francis Mennigke is originally from South Africa and now resides in Fort McMurray. He is renowned for his awarding winning show Rubbish, which won Best Production (Francis Mennigke), Best Actor (Francis Mennigke and Nathan Loitz) and Best Director (Michael Beamish) at the 2011 interPLAY festival.
Murray Cullen is a former Keyano VPA theatre student. He is now a professional actor and has performed across Western Canada.
Rebecca John, a Keyano VPA Theatre graduate (2004), and University of Lethbridge BFA graduate (2006), is a professional theatre artist and a founding member of Eye Flower Productions.
Playwright and Director, Michael Beamish is the founder of Eye Flower Productions. He is a Keyano VPA Theatre graduate (2003) and a University of Lethbridge BFA graduate (2005). His scripts have been produced at various festivals across Western Canada. He recently starred in Keyano Theatre Company’s production of The 39 Steps, and is the award winning director of Rubbish at the 2011 Fort McMurray interPLAY Festival.

Mar'ce Merrell here. LTTA is hosting a FREE event at Holy Trinity for any musicians or wanna-be musicians. Fiddles are involved. Guitars. Cellos. The spoons. Maybe a few accordions. NO registration is necessary. Come to one workshop or three. Then, attend or play in the jam session on Sunday. Please pass this onto anyone you think might be interested in attending.

Order of Canada recipient and master fiddler Andrea Hansen will teach fiddler lovers to play by ear in three workshops on Saturday October 29 and Sunday October 30.
New fiddlers will join community musicians for a Jam Session and concert on Sunday, October 30.
The Oct. 29th workshops will be held at Holy Trinity High School. The free concert on Oct. 30th will be in the Theatre of the Suncor Energy Centre for the Performing Arts at Holy Trinity High School.
The workshops are free and the free community concert will be open to the public.
About Andrea:
Andrea has dedicated much of her life to teaching people to play the fiddle. Now in her 70s, she's developed a method of teaching the fiddle that brings early success. Her passion is infectious. Jack Howell at Conklin had her at his school last year for a week and this year asked for two weeks. Recently he told me that Andrea's work with his students is the highlight of the year! Andrea has taught in 17 high Arctic communities since 1988. She retired as a professional full-time violinist from the Toronto Symphony Orchestra in 1999. She was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award during the Aboriginal Awards in 2007.
From Andrea's mission statement: "After only a few short days of instruction, students are performing in public. They gain a new sense of accomplishment and self-esteem. Some children experience a sense of approval for the very first time in their lives. The violin has been my passport to the world. I want to share this learning opportunity with as many children across Canada as I possibly can.”
The Details:
Andrea describes this Community Music Event as a two-day kitchen party! She invites anyone interested in fiddling or guitars to join her for three workshops. She'll work with anyone from age 8 to 88.

Presenting Arts Organizations Survey – The Value of Presenting in Canada
Canada’s performing arts presenting networks have launched an important survey of organizations who present the works of touring artists. This one-of-a-kind, national survey is designed to draw a portrait of the Canadian presenting field and to gain fresh views and opinions of all presenters. It is a central piece of The Value of Presenting study, and likely the largest survey of its kind in Canadian history.
The survey was sent out by personal email invitation from EKOS Research to 1500 organizations who have already been identified by presenting networks and stakeholders.
Organizations who present the works of touring artists, but who have not received this email are also invited to complete the survey at www.ekos.com/presentersurvey-e/.
We encourage all presenting organizations to take the time (20-25 minutes) to complete this important survey, which will allow us to gain a much better understanding of arts presentation and its impacts in our province.
The Value of Presenting: A Study of Arts Presentation in Canada is a large-scale enquiry undertaken by CAPACOA and Canada’s presenting networks to understand and communicate the value and benefits of presenting for Canadians and to raise awareness of the role of the live arts presenter in the arts ecology, in communities, in society. Besides this survey, the study will also rely on literature review, live dialogue sessions and online consultations to define that role with the next 20 years in mind.

Full Moon Cafe: First of the House Concert Series
Please join us as we begin the First of the House Concert Series.
Venue: Vista Ridge Lodge http://www.vistaridge.ab.ca/
Date/Time: Friday Sept 30th at 8 p.m.
How to get there: (From Fort McMurray) - Follow Hwy. 63 south to Hwy. 69. Follow Highway 69 past the airport turn off (12 km) towards Saprae Creek. Turn left onto Spruce Valley Road (towards Saprae Creek Estates). Vista Ridge is located at the end of the road.
Performing artists on the bill:
Opener: Singer/Songwriter Jim Dorie http://www.jimdorie.com/
Jim will open up our 8th season! This is fitting because Jim was a regular at the Full Moon Cafe in the past.
Jim feels right at home playing to audiences at house concerts and folk festivals.
Main: Singer/Songwriter Ken Flaherty accompanied by Kevin Meeks

Ken was a co-host of McMurray Music on CJOK radio featuring local musicians and would occasionally drop into the Full Moon Cafe. “I consider myself more of a story teller than a song writer. “ says Flaherty, when asked to describe his style “if I can hold your attention for a few minutes I consider the song successful. I feel that music can entertain and still make a social statement, if you want it to.” Ken opened for the Irish Descendants at a Wood Buffalo Kitchen party back in 2010, Ken performs at house concerts and festivals. Kevin often accompanies Ken.
Admission: $10 at the door, cash only please. Bring an extra $20 to $40 for a CD or two in case you want to purchase CDs.
All proceeds go to the artists.
Vista Ridge has a licenced bar. Please make plans to carpool or cab it if you are consuming alcohol.
