MacDonald Island Community Art Gallery presented by Kirschner Family Corporation is excited to announce their 5th Annual Charity Exhibition titled Filling the Palette is open for viewing Monday, November 9th through to November 29th and benefits the Wood Buffalo Food Bank!

This year the silent auction component of the exhibition will be held online at 32auctions.com/fillingthepalette commencing during the Open Reception on November 12th. 10 artworks will be for auction while the rest can be purchased at the displayed price. 50% of the sale price will go to the Wood Buffalo Food Bank with the other 50% going to the artist. 

Do not miss the Open Reception November 12th, from 7PM - 9PM. Enjoy light refreshments, live music and view a variety of artworks from local artists, having the chance to bid on artwork for yourself and donate to a great cause!

NORTHERN LIGHTS QUILTER'S GUILD - Our History

On November 24, 1997 a ‘Getting Organized’ meeting was held with 14 quilters in attendance. There was a general discussion on goals and objectives, and nominations for the first executive, and the Guild began.

The decision to join the Canadian Quilters Association (CQA) was made at the January 12, 1998 meeting. The name NORTHERN LIGHTS QUILTER’S GUILD was accepted at the February 9, 1998 meeting and the announcement of Official Membership in CQA was made at the April 6, 1998 meeting. Meetings were set to be held the second and fourth Monday of each month at Greely Road School; with one being a business meeting and the other an instructional meeting. Annual Membership was set at $20.00 a year.

The membership immediately got to work with in-house demonstrations, instruction and mentoring, show and tell, advertising, fabric discounts for Guild Members, and charitable donations to various causes. By the end of April 1998, the Planning Committee consisted of 11 members. We continue with many of these activities still today.

By 2003, membership had grown to over 40. Throughout the past 5 years, instructors from other sources were being invited to teach interesting techniques and workshops. The Planning Committee kept coming up with new and unique ideas to keep the quilters quilting. Throughout the years, we have utilized several venues in the city for meetings or quilting days, i.e. Haxton Centre, Hub, Bob Lamb/Keyano College, Heritage Park, Bear Paw Quilt Store and Suzy Q's to name just a few.

The Guild has been and continues to be very involved throughout the years very in supporting community organizations through making and donating Charity Quilts. Over the years we have supported many organizations such as the Festival of the Trees, Canadian Mental Health Association, Heritage Park, The Hub, and many others.

Throughout the years, our Guild has maintained a membership of 40+. We have experienced much transition, however we still hang on to our eldest and a founding member, Yvonne Whelton. Our venue is now Heritage Park and Bob Lamb, alternating with one meeting and then a weekend of quilting each month. Membership fees are now just $75.00 a year. The planning committee continues with course offerings from teachers in and out of town as well as meeting activities such as mystery quilt projects and Social Committee plans for celebrations throughout the year with gift exchanges and potlucks. We have a website, www.mcmurrayquilters.org that keeps members (old and new) up-to-date and also increases our visibility for those who are new to Fort McMurray and want to join in the fun and creativity of quilting.

Since the beginning and still today, The NORTHERN LIGHTS QUILTER’S GUILD provides an environment of sharing and appreciation for the art of quilting for quilters of all levels.

Main Gallery

Harcourt House supports eight exhibitions annually in this space and only applications from established artists, local, national or international, will be considered for this space. Individual artists and groups are open to submit to the Main Gallery as long as they meet the definition of an established artist. Please see definitions below.

The Main Gallery has two programming deadlines in a year:
June 30 and November 30.
 

Front Room Gallery

Harcourt House accepts proposals for the Front Room on an ongoing basis. The Front Room Gallery is a space for individual and collaborative artists to showcase experimental work, timely works, projects in progress, topics that provoke viewer engagement and for those simply learning the basics of exhibition installation. Emerging and established artists will be considered. Please see definitions below.

Harcourt House pays CAR/FAC fees of $1750.00 for the Main Gallery exhibitions and $400.00 based on a solo Front Room show.

As of September 27, 2012, Harcourt House will accept DIGITAL FORMATS ONLY. Images and written support must be burned to a SINGLE CD.

Please clearly label CD with artist’s full name and the gallery submitting to.

All written support should be sent as a SINGLE PDF, WORD, or OPEN OFFICE FILE. This includes: project description, curriculum vitae (C.V.), artist statement, and slide list.

Images must be in JPEG FORMAT. Please do not send any paper documents, printed images, or return envelopes as submissions will not be returned.

Annual Museums and The Web conference registration now open

TREX (Travelling Exhibition Program)

The Alberta Foundation for the Arts (AFA) has supported a provincial travelling exhibition program since 1981.The mandate of the AFA Travelling Exhibition Program is to provide every Albertan with the opportunity to enjoy visual art exhibitions in their community.

“Art for everyone” – Open Call

Charity Exhibit, Sale and Auction

MacDonald Island Community Art Gallery and the Wood Buffalo Artists Forum is organizing an annual charity exhibit, sale and auction to benefit the local United Way campaign.

Participating artists have the opportunity to donate a portion of their work for a good cause and to cover their costs (Half the proceeds from the sale of each piece of art will go to the United Way and the other half will be presented to the artist.)

Chosen artwork will be displayed at the MacDonald Island Community Art Gallery from Dec 1, 2011 to January 18, 2012.

The Exhibit Opening will be held at the Gallery on December 1, 2011 from 7 – 9pm.

Please submit a digital photo of your piece, along with your name, contact information, title of the piece, the size of the piece(including frame), the medium used, price and whether you would like to donate 100% or 50% of the proceeds by November 21, 2011, to anamaria.mendez@macdonaldisland.ca.

Grand Opening of “The Beauty of the North” Exhibit

The MacDonald Island Community Art Gallery is delighted to invite the public to the grand opening of “The Beauty of the North” exhibit on Thursday evening. The exhibition features six large canvasses created by local artists and students from across the Wood Buffalo region.

The paintings reflect the natural beauty of Wood Buffalo and were crafted last Saturday as part of Alberta Arts Days, and will be on display until Sunday, October 23. Russell Thomas, Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo Councillor, and Lucy Moore, Principal at Holy Trinity High School are scheduled to speak at the opening.

DaDe Art & Design Lab presents Kai Georg Scholefield

Kai Georg Scholefield, recent addition to the Bee Kingdom Art Collective who received Leftenant Governor Award for emerging artists in 2010, is very excited to have a solo glass art show at Dade ART & DESIGN LAB, in Calgary titled Final Fantasy II. This exhibition will start on September 16 and run until October 30, 2011, and consist of fine art glass sculpture, paintings and mixed media sculpture, including wood, steel, and concrete.

Kai's work will be a variant of his first solo exhibition, titled Final Fantasy which was hosted by the New Glass and Photography gallery in Berlin, Germany in 2010.

Kai Scholefield is also the President of the Calgary Glass Initiative foundation, which in the last several years has sponsored, curated, and funded public exhibitions of fine art glass at places such as the Triangle Gallery of the visual arts in Calgary, as well as traveling art exhibitions. CGI's current initiative is to open a publicly accessible glass studio in an effort to foster appreciation for glass art locally, nationally, and internationally.

Last night was the grand opening of a new art exhibit in Wood Buffalo. The Artist in Residency Program participants presented the bodies of work that they have been creating over the past three months. The grand opening at the Suncor Centre for the Preforming Arts, located in the brand new Holy Trinity High School (Timberlea) hosted over seventy five art enthusiasts. The exhibit titled Raw Destinations: explorations of the individual phenomena will be available to the public from August 29th - October 21st, so please visit the incredible new facility and see the show. RAW DESTINATIONS:

EXPLORATIONS OF THE INDIVIDUAL PHENOMENA

 

August 29th – October 21st 2011

Featuring: Lucie Bause, Kriza Borromeo, Megan Green, Carli Gaudet and Paul Neiman

The artists of the first Municipal Artist in Residency Program have challenged themselves and worked over the summer to create unique bodies of work. The collaborative nature of the studios space gave the participants the opportunity to pull inspiration from one another as well as offer critical reviews and constructive feedback on each others works. Although the environment presented an interactive and open space the works produced there represent five distinct perspectives and practices.

Raw Destinations presents select pieces from the final bodies of work created by each of the residency participants. As a group, the artists spent three months working together and interacting in the same studio space. However, each artist has expressed that their experiences were predominantly internalized and self exploratory throughout the residency. The artists wish to convey their individual perspective and the growth that they experienced while in this program. It is from that sentiment that is the foundation for the title, Raw Destinations: Explorations of the individual phenomena.

These artists are in the process of finding their stride and personal styles. The subject matter presented in this group exhibit ranges from the fashion and beauty industry to traditional landscapes and taxidermy. The thematic influences cover a gamut of artists from art history such as Klimt to contemporary American rock band Weezer. Viewers can see works that raise poignant questions about the male gaze, gender roles and the concept of home. It is also apparent that some artists are focused on honing certain techniques, choosing to focus on the materiality and process of creation rather than a working from a specific conceptual driver.

Although the works may at first glance have little correlating thematic or subject matter, upon a closer review of the artist statements and individual works the viewer may realize that many pieces reflect significant pop culture influences as well as an exploratory approach to materials. These two things serve as a common thread between these emerging artists.

Portrait of Honour Tour

The Portrait of Honour Tour Scheduled to make stop in Fort McMurray on September 2nd, 2011.

The Kinsmen and Kinette Clubs of Fort McMurray are hosting a unique local presentation.

The Portraits of Honour Tour is dedicated to honouring the fallen Canadian soldiers from the Afghanistan mission in a touching visual tribute. In this poignant 50 foot mural by a Canadian artist has captured a lifelike portrait of every soldier lost. This project will raise awareness in all Canadians of the lifelong impacts and challenges faced by the families of both fallen and wounded military personnel. We are pleased to announce that the National Portraits of Honour Tour will be coming to Fort McMurray on the weekend of September 2, 2011. This is the same Portrait of Honour display that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William and Catherine included in their Royal Tour.
