GRAFFITI ABATEMENT MURAL PROGRAM 2016

The Bob Lamb Bandstand at Borealis Park will be featured as the host location of the Graffiti Abatement Mural Program (GAMP) this year.  The program was launched in 2012, and aims at exploring urban art in a legal and respectful way and while deterring graffiti. To date, there are 4 murals around the urban service centre of Fort McMurray.

The 2012 mural was installed behind Composite High School, by artist Wil Yee (with the help of Composite High students)

The 2013 mural was painted by Toronto artist Uber5000, at Father Turcotte O.M.I School

It’s the creative forces that the RMWB wants to foster in its citizens and residents. Request for Proposals- AFA Collection Conservaton Assessment

In response to recommendations received through the development of a Collection Framework and Policy Manual, and feedback from the Canadian Conservation Institute, the AFA is looking to review the current conditions for artworks in the AFA Collection and usage in its programming, and develop a multi-year strategy for preventive and treatment conservation. The AFA is seeking a contractor to complete an on-site conservation review of the AFA’s current artwork holdings, and assist Arts Branch staff through the preparation of a long-term (six year) Conservation Review Report with Recommendations.  We have recently posted a Request for Proposals on Alberta Purchasing Connection for the AFA Artwork Collection Conservation Assessment. Medal Design Competition for the Western Canada Summer Games

The Western Canada Summer Games 2015 Wood Buffalo (RMWB) is pleased to announce a medal design competition which will be open to the public on Friday, September 19, 2014.

All entrants must be residents of the RMWB and the medals must reflect the unique nature, theme, culture and spirit of the 2015 Western Canada Summer Games and our region’s diversity and big spirit. The design must be original and not previously produced. 
The grand prize winner will receive a $1000 prize. The winner will also be given recognition at a public event hosted by the 2015 Wood Buffalo Western Canada Summer Games. 

Eligibility:
• This opportunity is open to all residents of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. 
• Employees of 2015 Western Summer Games Host Society and their immediate family are not eligible to submit an entry. 
• Medial Design Committee members and jurors are excluded from submitting an entry. 

Submission Requirements:
• The medal must reflect the unique nature, theme, culture and spirit of the 2015 Western Canada Summer Games and our region’s diversity and big spirit. 
• The design must be original and not previously produced. 
• The design is for the front side of the medal. 
• The design needs to fit the medal design template. (The medal design template will be available at www.2015woodbuffalo.com on Sept. 20th)

Glenrose Hospital Call for Submissions

Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital (GRH) Arts in Rehab Council offers artists an opportunity to exhibit their works. We are a health-care facility unique to Alberta and are devoted primarily to high-level rehabilitation care of seniors, adults and children. This facility is visited by approximately 160,000 individuals annually, including inpatients, outpatients, visitors, volunteers and staff.

The Arts in Rehab Council was developed to create opportunities for patients and staff to be exposed to Alberta and Canadian art and artists. The Council focuses on exploring sources for artwork exhibition or acquisition and evaluates any and all art works for display.

EXHIBITION ARRANGEMENTS 
Artists are responsible for framing, delivering, hanging or otherwise displaying and removing their own art. Artists are responsible for supplying supplemental materials to accompany the exhibition and assist in promoting their show, such as a guest book, onsite poster, labels and price list. 

EXHIBITION OPENING 
Artists may choose to have an opening reception for the exhibit. Arrangements for the event must be made with the Arts in Rehab Representative. The artist is responsible for all costs associated with a reception. Full details will be discussed with the artist at the time of booking 

SALE OF WORKS 
Artists have the option of pricing their works on exhibit for sale to the public. All art sales transactions are processed through the Friends of the Glenrose Corner Store where most forms of payment are accepted. The Arts in Rehab Council will assess a 20% commission on all sales of art during the period of the exhibition. The artist will receive payment at the close of the exhibit. Art pieces, including those sold during the period of the exhibition; remain on display until closing day of the show except in extenuating circumstances. Commissions on sales are used to support the Art of the Possible, Artist in Residence program for patients of the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital. The percentage of commission may be negotiated (reduced or waived) for emerging artists. 

PUBLICITY 
The Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital will use the promotional summary provided with the artist’s submission in standard publicity venues such as internal newsletters and local media listings. Artists may arrange for additional advertising at their own discretion and expense.

The International Studio & Curatorial Program (ISCP) in Brooklyn, New York announces an open call to apply for a residency for artists and curators from the province of Alberta. 

ISCP is a leading nonprofit, residency-based contemporary art institution for emerging to mid-career artists and curators from around the world, including the United States. With 30+ artists and curators in residence at all times, the program provides residents with the space, time, and support to develop new projects. With additional activities tailored for professional development and public engagement, ISCP serves as an important platform for producing, presenting and contextualizing contemporary art through a diverse range of international perspectives. ISCP’s public programs encourage dialogue and integrate residents into the cultural landscape of New York City. The residency includes 24-hour access to a private 350 sq. ft. furnished studio space, regular studio visits from Visiting Critics; Field Trips to museums, galleries and other cultural venues; and participation in Artist Talks and Open Studios. Calling all Artists! RBC Canadian Painting Competition

Established in 1999, the RBC Canadian Painting Competition, with the support of the Canadian Art Foundation, is a unique initiative to help nurture and support promising new artists in the early stages of their careers; a time when they need both recognition and financial support.

A regional jury panel of distinguished members from the arts community select five paintings from their regions as follows: Eastern (Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, PEI, Newfoundland and Labrador), Central (Ontario), Western Canada (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut).

The three jury panels then select one national winner and two honourable mentions from the 15 semi-finalists. The national winner receives a purchase prize of $25,000 and the two honourable mentions each receive $15,000.

The winner’s painting will be added to RBC’s Canadian art collection, which features more than 4,000 works collected over the past hundred years. The collection includes original works of art by well-known and emerging Canadian artists, as well as distinguished artists from across the U.S. The collection also includes works by previous RBC Canadian Painting Competition winners and finalists.

AFA- Art Acquisition By Application

Calling All Filmmakers!

CBC Television is pleased to announce another season of Short Film Face Off, Canada’s only television magazine program that features short films from across the country. Now in its seventh season, the critically acclaimed show has helped bring a mainstream audience for short films in Canada and increased the profile of its featured filmmakers. The CBC is looking for the best short films from every region to take part in this program.

In Short Film Face Off, films are screened for a panel of industry professionals who provide commentary and discuss the creative and technical aspects of the films with the filmmakers. The series has a competitive component. The studio panel will choose three finalists and the television viewing audience will ultimately vote for the top film. The CBC and sponsors offer a prize made up of cash and production services to be used by the winning filmmaker towards his or her next short film. That film will be licensed for broadcast by the CBC.   

Films must be under 12 minutes in length, must have been completed in the past two years, and must not have been broadcast on network television. We are looking for comedies and dramas. Music videos and documentaries are not suitable for this program. Directors must be available for tapings at CBC Halifax from June 17 to June 20. The program producers will pay all travel and accommodation costs.

Calling All Artists for the Healing Halls Art Program

The Northern Lights Health Foundation is launching its new Healing Halls Art Program.

Having art visible in hospitals is believed to support the well-being of patients, families and hospital staff, as well as reduce stress and create a positive, healing environment.

Starting in April 2014 the Northern Lights Health Centre will come to life with art from local artists of Wood Buffalo.

Artists have the opportunity to display and sell their art in the halls of the Health Centre, with a percentage of proceeds from sales donated to the Health Foundation.

The art pieces will be available for sale to the public, with 30 per cent of the sales donated to the Health Foundation.

Art pieces will be displayed for a 60 day period before they are removed and exchanged with new art.

To get your art hung in the first intake, please arrange to have your art dropped off at the Health Foundation office by April 1, 2014.

The New Quarterly Magazine Verse Contest- Deadline March 14, 2014

The Nick Blatchford Occasional Verse Contest: $1 000 for one glorious poem

Sponsored by TNQ editor Kim Jernigan and family in celebration of the man who sparked their love of poetry, this contest is for poems written in response to an occasion, personal or public-poems of gratitude or grief, poems that celebrate or berate, poems that make an occasion of something or simply mark one. We are interested in light verse and in verse more sober, in the whole spectrum of tones and occasions. One of Nick's own poems, which we think captures the broadness of his (and our) sense of 'occasion', is pictured at left. For a bit lengthier background on the genre, you can also turn to Amanda Jernigan's funny and thoughtful essay on poems and occasions, linked below. Both originally appeared in Issue 100 of TNQ.

We will award a grand prize of $1,000 to the poem judged most worthy. Another $1,000 in prize money will be distributed as the judges fancy. However the prize money falls, the best of what we see will be published in The New Quarterly, at our usual rates, and posted on our website.

Entry fee: $40 for up to 2 unpublished poems, $5 each for additional poems. Submissions include a one-year Canadian subscription (or subscription extension) to The New Quarterly and may be accompanied by a brief paragraph describing the event that occasioned the poem. 

Eligiblity: Entrants must be Canadian or currently residing in Canada. Entries may not be previously published, accepted, or submitted for publication elsewhere. There are no restrictions on length or number of entries, as long as the appropriate fees are paid. Entrants anonymity will be carefully preserved throughout the judging process. The decisions will be made by August 31; winner(s) and finalists will receive notification by mail.

The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo is issuing a Request for Proposals for up to four temporary public art displays to be placed in various locations throughout the downtown core. We are inviting proposals that feature new projects or projects that have already been developed and staged through past commissions.  The medium for the festival will be light art and/or light graffiti; sound and other multi-media components are also encouraged.  Artists must have the work fully installed and functional by the festival launch date of April 4th, 2014.

Each public art installation will have a total budget of $35,000.00 CAD (inclusive).  Additional details on project locations will be made available to the successful applicant/applicants upon notification.

The Personal Florist is looking for artwork from local artists to exhibit during it's Grand Opening January 2014.

Dates:

• The deadline for submissions is 11:00 PM, Sunday, December 29, 2013.
• Judging will be final by December 31, 2013, with notifications emailed by January 2nd, 2014.
• The Grand Opening is planned for mid January; installation scheduled for 1st week of January 2014.
• Artwork will be exhibited for 2 months. Artwork will be brought down nor earlier than 1st week of March.
