Arts Impact Alberta 2014: Ripple Effects from the Arts Sector

In 2012, the AFA was proud to announce the release of Arts Impact Alberta: Ripple Effects from the Arts Sector , a five-year summary of the impacts and activities of the organizations that receive operational funding from the AFA.

Arts Impact: Ripple Effects from the Arts Sector demonstrated the positive and powerful contributions arts organizations make to Albertans’ quality of life. These contributions are reflected in a variety of important ways: simply put, the arts matter to Albertans; the arts matter to volunteers; and, the arts matter to the economy.

The AFA has now updated Arts Impact Alberta with two more years of data.Arts Impact Alberta 2014: Ripple Effects illustrates how the arts sector impacted Alberta through a seven-year lens and how AFA operational funding is contributing to the health of the sector.  The report reveals that:

"The majority (85%) of adult Albertans attended at least one arts event per year, and just over half participate directly in an art form in their home or community. Nonprofit arts organizations in Alberta present an average of 24,000 events per year throughout the province…Each year about 50,000 Albertans, the equivalent of an entire medium sized city such as Medicine Hat or St. Albert, volunteer for arts organizations that receive operational funding from the AFA. These volunteers give an average of 34 hours of their time and talent to the nonprofit arts organization of their choice, and collectively work the equivalent of an estimated 1,075 full-time jobs…Overall, revenues have remained higher than expenditures for nonprofit arts organizations…The direct GDP contribution of the sector to Alberta’s economy is estimated at $110 million, resulting from approximately $203 million in total economic activity generated by nonprofit arts organizations. Arts organizations receiving AFA operational funding employed more than 3,400 people in 2012-13; approximately 700 full-time staff and 2,700 part-time staff worked for the 450 organizations that received operational funding. The nonprofit arts sector creates around 22 full-time equivalent jobs for every one million dollars of expenditure in the sector. The total employment generated by the sector is estimated at 3,008 full-time equivalent jobs (including jobs generated in other sectors)."

Arts and culture funding is an investment with great dividends that reveals itself not only in a bank statement but in the smiles of your children as they participate in their first theatre show, an exhibition by local artists, or a community concert. The Municipality of Wood Buffalo understands that arts and culture not only creates a powerful sense of belonging and community but it also benefits the local economy. The AFA Arts Impact Alberta 2014: Ripple Effects report gives credible evidence to our long held beliefs and our goal of creating a vibrant culture in Wood Buffalo outlined in our Municipal Development Plan.

Please download the Arts Impact Alberta 2014: Ripple Effects from the Arts Sector report; share the report with the people in your community and in doing so, tell the story of how important the arts sector is to Alberta's cultural fabric!

Alberta boosts efforts to showcase culture

(News release from Government of Alberta News Bulletin located HERE)

March 12, 2012

Province broadens scope of provincial celebrations

Edmonton... Albertans will have the opportunity for broader exposure to the many facets of Alberta’s culture during this year’s annual celebration in September.

Based on input from the recent Culture Forum 2012, Alberta Arts Days has been renamed Alberta Culture Days. Participants felt this change would help encourage broader participation and support the efforts of Alberta’s arts, heritage, nonprofit/voluntary, multicultural and youth serving organizations. It also reflects the importance of increased collaboration and partnerships across the relevant sectors.

“Hosting an Alberta Culture Days event is a wonderful opportunity to foster community relationships and showcase local talent,” said Heather Klimchuk, Minister of Culture and Community Services. “It’s also a great way for organizations to boost the impact and reach of existing efforts to promote the value and availability of cultural programming in our province. Culture connects our people, our communities and our province.”

Alberta Culture Days runs from September 28 to 30 in conjunction with the national Culture Days movement. To support the province-wide celebration, the Government of Alberta is again making funding available to those wishing to host cultural events and be designated official Celebration Sites. All nonprofit/voluntary, multicultural, heritage and arts organizations are encouraged to apply.

Two levels of funding are available: up to $20,000 to be designated a Feature Celebration Site; and up to $5,000 to be designated a Host Celebration Site. Consideration will be given to those who partner with others in their community to present cultural programming. Interested applicants should visit http://www.culture.alberta.ca/culturedays/.

The application deadline is May 8.

“Alberta Arts Days has always been about celebrating our heritage, cultural diversity and provincial pride,” said Klimchuk. “The change in name to Alberta Culture Days is actually in keeping with what communities are already doing. Last year, thousands of Albertans enjoyed 1,046 events and activities hosted by an array of organizations including schools, libraries, recreation centres, arts and multicultural groups, social serving organizations; and many, many others.”

In 2011, 64 Host Celebration Sites and five Feature Celebration Sites were selected to coordinate activities in their communities. All Albertans are encouraged to participate in Alberta Culture Days by attending some of the hundreds of free, family-friendly events; or hosting one of their own. Alberta Culture Days is helping to fulfill the goals of our provincial cultural policy, The Spirit of Alberta. For more information visit http://www.culture.alberta.ca/culturedays/.

Culture Forum 2012 occurred February 24 and 25 and involved nearly 400 representatives from Alberta’s broad culture sector. The discussions that occurred, along with feedback received from the online public survey, which is available until March 28 and can be found at www.culture.alberta.ca/cultureforum2012, will help government, the corporate community and Alberta’s culture sector collectively build a solid foundation for culture to prosper in our province.

Have your say in Alberta's cultural future

(News release from Government of Alberta News Bulletin located HERE)

Edmonton... The Government of Alberta is asking Albertans for their help in charting a course for our province’s cultural future.

The online survey, which is available at www.culture.alberta.ca/CultureForum2012 from February 28 to March 28, echoes the questions and topics that delegates of Culture Forum 2012 recently covered.

“Our culture and our cultural pursuits are intrinsic to everything we do and are vital to our quality of life,” said Heather Klimchuk, Minister of Culture and Community Services. “What makes a tight knit community is the people and the cultural organizations that bring them together. Hearing from a cross-section of community leaders directly involved in cultural programming and services was the first step. Now, it’s critical that we hear from others including those accessing these programs and services.”

Culture Forum 2012 was held in Red Deer on February 24 and 25 and involved nearly 400 representatives of Alberta’s arts, heritage, nonprofit/voluntary, multicultural, creative industries and corporate sectors, as well as a delegation of youth. Delegates heard from presenters and participated in 18 concurrent workshops covering topics such as ‘What does a healthy and sustainable culture sector look like?’, ‘What are the challenges?’, ‘What strategies do you suggest?’, and ‘Where do you see priorities?’ A broad range of ideas, best practices and new innovations were discussed. A high-level summary of what was discussed is available at www.culture.alberta.ca/CultureForum2012.

“I was so impressed by the quality of the discussions and willingness of Culture Forum 2012 delegates to take part in this process,” added Klimchuk. “Hearing now what the broader public has to say about Alberta’s culture will help guide the future direction that government, along with the sector take together."

The Government of Alberta is working to enhance Albertans’ quality of life. The information and feedback received through Culture Forum 2012 and the broader public survey will help government, the corporate community and the culture sector build a solid foundation for culture to prosper in our province.
