June 26th AIR Open House
This past Sunday, the Artist in Residency (AIR) participants hosted their first Open House event. Through the Open Houses; which occur every Sunday between 2 - 6pm until August 20th, the general public gains access to the artist's studios, work and the artists themselves.
We had over twenty people stop by to visit with the artists and explore the studios. As I walked around I was able to join in on conversations that ranged from acrylic and drawing techniques, to arts administration and professional studies, fashion illustration, publishing practices and debates on art history. The atmosphere in the studio was one of excitement and collaboration. I am really looking forward to next week's Open House and to see what the artists can accomplish between now and then!
Below are a few quick shots I took of the event. I hope you enjoy them and are enticed to stop by next weekend between 2:00pm - 6:00pm to meet the Artists. The studio is located at 155 Beaconwood Road Fort McMurray: The Frank Lacoix Arena
For more information about the artists, the program or the Open Houses, please visit the Municipal website: http://www.woodbuffalo.ab.ca/artist
Cheers,
Connor

Meaghan Smith live in your living room; an unforgettable experience
Have you ever heard of a program called Home Roots? It’s a lovely program that supports Canadian music by allowing inspiring singers and musicians to travel a circuit of towns and provinces and play in people’s homes, coffee shops, and town halls; basically anywhere that’s capable of plugging in musical instruments and can seat an audience.
I’ve had the privilege to attend three Home Roots events here in Fort McMurray and they are worth every penny of my $35 dollar ticket. Not only are the concerts as intimate as it can get by literally having bands perform in the same living room I’m sitting in, but it truly was a wonderful experience that, just for a couple of hours, had taken me away from the business of everyday life.
Just this past weekend, I saw Meaghan Smith and Jason Mingle perform and it was magnificent. This was a sold out show, seating for approx. 25 people; which was a comfortable fit around a living room. The couple that hosts the local Home Roots experience open their home monthly to musicians; providing them with a place to stay, home cooked meals, sometimes sight seeing and in return, the musicians perform for an audience, interact with them and have an opportunity to sell merchandise.
Meaghan Smith was phenomenal and all of her songs bled from her own memories and experiences which made each verse and lyric more real and familiar.
Meaghan was nominated for three East Coast Music Awards and is the recipient of the 2011 JUNO for Best New Artist. Originating from Nova Scotia, Meaghan’s album, The Crickets Orchestra, offers a mix of blues inspired folk music that just touches you when you hear it. Although Meaghan was not part of the current Home Roots circuit, she supports the Home Roots Initiative and was able to fit this visit into her performing schedule between Canmore and Edmonton, allowing the host couple to end their Home Roots musical experiences with Meaghan’s show.
For more information about Meaghan Smith, visit her website at http://www.meaghansmith.com/

Mesmerizing Fashion Show: A Follow Up
Below is a message the Nisa Collection team:
Where East meets West
19th June: It was noon on Sunday at McIsland Park and women in a grand array of colour shuffled into the Miskanaw Ballroom from different parts of town. The event that attracted women from all cultures and walks of life was the East meets West, Mesmerizing Fashion Show by Nisa Collection’s Uzma Syed.
Says Uzma,”When I started the business two years ago, I couldn’t have dreamt of something of this magnitude or proportion. “ Started as a home-based business, Uzma has carved a niche for herself and this event has helped bring out her dedication and talent. An absolutely stunning range of colour, fabric and design, Uzma dazzled the audience with her debut collection. There were a million dresses, Pakistani and Western up for grabs and women were literally grabbing them.
Overheard over the crowds, “which one should I take? I like all of them!” “Hey, who’s taken that? My daughter had her eye on it” Women were excited, not only South Asian Canadians who are used to these kind of clothes and designs but every woman’s eyes lit up as the models swish sashayed the ramp in stunning colours, make-up and jewellery.
Uzma closed the show to a grand applause from the audience to her emotional speech rendered with suave and panache. The first ever Pakistani Fashion show in Wood Buffalo was a hit if the audience is to be believed.
In 2008 reminisces Uzma when she moved into this city after living in Toronto for about nine years, she suddenly realised how difficult it was to get her favourite outfits here. She used drive to Edmonton and even there she did not find the variety she sought. “I used to wait eagerly for my next trip back home to get the latest designs. Being fashion conscious and very trendy, I decided I had to do something to change the situation and began the business with support from my brother in Pakistan and my husband. I am so grateful for the opportunity this city afforded me and generous support from volunteers, sponsors and friends, “adds Uzma Syed, who has just made a new fashion statement in town.
Thus with the gracious hand from sponsors Rohit Communities, Fatima Mian –Remax, Import Connection and the South Asian Canadian Xpress news paper, Nisa Collection believes it has taken a step in creating harmony through colours, promoting multiculturalism and has set apart a portion of the admission fee to support Slave Lake residents.

Youth Development speaker is visiting Fort McMurray
The Wood Buffalo RCMP would like to inform you of a guest speaker who will be attending Fort McMurray. Mr Abdifatah (Abdi) Warsame will be working with the local African Community in hopes to establish a mentoring youth program for our equity seeking and racialized youth in the Wood Buffalo region.
Mr Warsame’s visit to Fort McMurray is still being organized and a tentative date for the week of June 13th to June 17th has been set. Mr Warsame will be bringing with him a couple of guest speakers who he has closely worked with in the past, one of whom is Said Dirie. Together they will be presenting to a number of community members and groups. Topics will range from Dealing with Difficult Youth for parents to the Anti Oppression Framework in Dealing with Diverse Communities for the RCMP.
Mr Warsame brings with him an impressive background in youth program development and implementation and his knowledge will certainly be worth sharing with all interested community members and organizers. Mr Warsame is also the Co-Founder for Centre of Youth Development and Mentoring Services (CYDMS) currently operating in Toronto, Ontario.
CYDMS currently runs two programs:
1. Youth Education Services (YES) program
The objective of this program is to make sure Youth will graduate elementary and secondary school in a good standing, learn and develop the proper character attributes to enter High School or Post Secondary.
2. Mentoring and Violence Prevention (MVP) program
The objective of this program is to keep kids in school and out of the juvenile justice system.
Additional information on CYDMS, Mr Warsame and Mr Dirie can be found attached or by visiting the CYDMS website at http://www.cydms.org/ This program initiative has been brought before a number of community members with positive feedback and many others wishing to contribute directly to its implementation.
If you would like to have further information on the above initiative or feel this is a program you would like to contribute to please contact Cst Dustin Greig below and he will forward your information to the appropriate contact(s).

Alberta Arts Days 2011: Five Feature Celebration Sites
An announcement from the Government of Alberta, Arts and Cultural Spirit:
Five Feature Celebration Sites and 64 Host Celebration Sites to lead Alberta Arts Days festivities
Edmonton... To encourage participation, help foster new relationships and increase access to cultural experiences, the Government of Alberta is providing support for Alberta Arts Days events in 49 communities. Sixty-nine groups will share a total of $375,000 to assist with planning and coordinating events in their communities and will be designated as official Alberta Arts Days 2011 Celebration Sites for their efforts.
“We’re hoping the leadership shown by the Celebration Sites will inspire even more Albertans to get involved,” said Lindsay Blackett, Minister of Culture and Community Spirit. “Some amazing relationships have developed from the partnerships that were formed in previous years.”
Each organization receiving support will partner with others in their community to present free, family-friendly events and activities during Alberta Arts Days 2011, September 30 to October 2. Host Celebration Sites must present programming for two days and Feature Celebration Sites must present programming for all three days as well as stage a main event.
“Alberta Arts Days is about family, community, diversity and cultural vibrancy. It’s a celebration of everything great about this province,” added Blackett. “The support and participation of all communities, governments, businesses, organizations and individuals is required to truly showcase Alberta’s creative spirit.”
Hosting an Alberta Arts Days event is an opportunity to foster relationships, develop new partnerships, strengthen community spirit and showcase local talents. It also provides a platform for organizations and communities to boost the impact and reach of existing efforts to promote cultural programming. Last year, 91 communities hosted 681 events. Now in its fourth year, Alberta Arts Days will continue to promote the value of the arts, increase Albertans access to cultural experiences and encourage creative collaborations.
Anyone interested in hosting an event should visit www.AlbertaArtsDays.ca. The site features a number of event planning resources and promotional tools. Also, those that register their events on the Alberta Culture Calendar will benefit from a provincial marketing and communications campaign.
Alberta Arts Days is helping to achieve the goals of our province’s cultural policy, The Spirit of Alberta, which is designed around four keystones: access, capacity, excellence and sustaining cultural industries. It is also part of Culture Days, a pan-Canadian movement to raise the awareness, accessibility, participation and engagement of all Canadians in the arts and cultural life of their communities.

Back To The 80's
Father Mercredi Community High School's MASC proudly presents Back To The 80's
Corey, as an adult, takes us back to his high school days to tell us about how much he liked Tiffany, how much Tiffany like Michael, and how Michael stole his Class President election speech, which caused Corey to lose the election. While Corey doesn't become Class President, he still wants to hold a fantastic party and have a great dance party.
Will Tiffany ever see the evil side of Michael? Will Corey finally get the girl of his dreams? Will the dance be a success? Meanwhile, how will Mr. Cocker cope with the news of his teacher-girlfriend being a previous centerfold model? Will the teachers' relationship be able to survive this hurdle? And...will Feargal ever get a date...will Eileen ever make new friends at the new school?
With music that will make you want to sing and dance, Back to the 80s just might remind you of your high school days! Wear your acid-wash jeans and your Madonna gloves, tease your bangs and comb your mullet. Back to the 80sis totally wicked!
