The Legislative Assembly Office supports the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly – providing nonpartisan procedural, administrative and educational services.

As an ambassador for the Alberta Legislature you will use your dynamic interpretation and presentation skills to deliver tours and inquiry-based educational programming focused on the history, parliamentary process and political practices of the Alberta Legislature. To engage our visitors in an exceptional experience, you will project a professional and nonpartisan attitude in interactions with clients along with a strong commitment to client service.

Completion of or enrolment in postsecondary education is required. Knowledge of educational programming, cultural and/or historical interpretive techniques and an interest in history and the political process are assets for this position. Extensive training and resources will be provided. Proficiency in French or other languages is an asset. 

Starting rate of pay for Heritage Interpreters is $18.08 per hour with an increase to $19.93 per hour upon completion of training plus 11.2% in lieu of holiday and statutory entitlements.

This position requires the flexibility to work day, evening, weekend and statutory holiday shifts as hours of work may vary. Heritage Interpreters must have full-time availability up to 36.25 hours per week.

The Prince of Wales Prize for Municipal Heritage Leadership

Heritage Canada The National Trust (HCNT) believes that historic places are the cornerstones of community, identity and sense of place. The National Awards Program recognizes individuals, organizations, corporations and rehabilitation projects that give new life to Canada’s historic places. HCNT's awards are presented at a ceremony held in conjunction with our annual conference. Selections are made by independent juries whose members represent, on a broad basis, the regions of Canada, the various disciplines relating to heritage conservation, and the voluntary heritage movement.

"I have always believed that if you want to effect change it is not enough merely to champion an idea, but absolutely vital to make the effort to create tangible examples on the ground that prove this philosophy, and then inspire other communities to do the same." HRH The Prince of Wales.

In keeping with His Royal Highness’ commitment to architecture, the environment, and inner-city renewal, The Prince of Wales agreed to lend his title to the creation in 1999 of a prize to be awarded annually to the government of a municipality which has demonstrated a strong and sustained commitment to the conservation of its historic places. The local government must have a record of supporting heritage preservation through such means as regulation, policies, funding and exemplary stewardship. The nomination must provide evidence that heritage properties in the given municipality have improved over a period of time.

The award consists of a metal plaque and a scroll, as well as a flag or pennant to be flown outside the winning municipality’s headquarters and/or placed on permanent display. The Prince of Wales Prize logo must be displayed on the homepage of the municipality’s website.

The New Quarterly Magazine Verse Contest- Deadline March 14, 2014

The Nick Blatchford Occasional Verse Contest: $1 000 for one glorious poem

Sponsored by TNQ editor Kim Jernigan and family in celebration of the man who sparked their love of poetry, this contest is for poems written in response to an occasion, personal or public-poems of gratitude or grief, poems that celebrate or berate, poems that make an occasion of something or simply mark one. We are interested in light verse and in verse more sober, in the whole spectrum of tones and occasions. One of Nick's own poems, which we think captures the broadness of his (and our) sense of 'occasion', is pictured at left. For a bit lengthier background on the genre, you can also turn to Amanda Jernigan's funny and thoughtful essay on poems and occasions, linked below. Both originally appeared in Issue 100 of TNQ.

We will award a grand prize of $1,000 to the poem judged most worthy. Another $1,000 in prize money will be distributed as the judges fancy. However the prize money falls, the best of what we see will be published in The New Quarterly, at our usual rates, and posted on our website.

Entry fee: $40 for up to 2 unpublished poems, $5 each for additional poems. Submissions include a one-year Canadian subscription (or subscription extension) to The New Quarterly and may be accompanied by a brief paragraph describing the event that occasioned the poem. 

Eligiblity: Entrants must be Canadian or currently residing in Canada. Entries may not be previously published, accepted, or submitted for publication elsewhere. There are no restrictions on length or number of entries, as long as the appropriate fees are paid. Entrants anonymity will be carefully preserved throughout the judging process. The decisions will be made by August 31; winner(s) and finalists will receive notification by mail.
