Canada Day!

To celebrate Canada Day, The Multicultural Association of Wood Buffalo (MCA) is hosting the Canada Day Pancake Breakfast at MacDonald Island Park, July 1st 2015. At the Pancake Breakfast, families will have the opportunity to celebrate Canada and enjoy the entertainment, food, and activities for seniors, children and adults.

The Canada Day Pancake Breakfast is part of a collaborative effort between MCA, RMWB and ONE to provide a wide array of fun activities for families on Canada Day.

The Pancake Breakfast brings our diverse community together with food, music, and activities that celebrate our multiculturalism and Canadian heritage.

Please come out and volunteer for this great event, we promise will be a day full of fun!

Happy Canada Day

Canada Day, Dominion Day and the First of July are all labels that were given to the day July 1 to celebrate the anniversary of the Constitution Act of 1867.  This act joined Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Ontario and Quebec into a single country known as Canada and providing Canada with a large amount of independence from England.  Sir John A. MacDonald is sworn in as the First Prime Minister  and the Canadian Confederation is formed.  

Fireworks will light up the sky on Canada Day all across the Nation. Parades will line the streets of bustling towns and cities.  Face painters, stilt walkers, music entertainers, and much much more will provide a day of family fun and enjoyment and a proud day for all Canadians.

Many communities extend their celebrations to include more then just one day, such as here in Wood Buffalo.   Canada Day festivities officially begin on June 30th with the Canada Rocks celebrations starting at 9:00pm.  Join performing artists such as the Sentimental Gentlemen and more for a night of live entertainment on stage.  The night will end with an AMAZING fireworks show.  Canada Rocks takes place at the Suncor Community Leisure Centre parking lot on MacDonald Island.  

Then on July 1st, the day kicks off with a complementary pancake breakfast by the Multicultural Association at MacDonald Island. The day will be alive with an art market, workshops, a kids zone, dance performances, Mike the Knight and other live entertainment on stage, face painting, henna art and so much more.  Plus, the Canada Day parade will make its way south on Franklin Ave (starting at Morrison St. to Ridel. St) from 11:00-1:00.  

So, as you join your fellow Canadians in waving those little hand held red and white flags in celebration of Canada Day here are some interesting facts about July 1;

• 1863 - The Battle of Gettysburg began
• 1873 - Prince Edward Island joins Canadian Federation
• 1903 - The Tour de France bicycle race made its debut
• 1881 - Canada and Bermuda are linked by telegraph cable
• 1908 - SOS is adapted as the international distress signal
• 1927 - the first national radio hookup was initiated by the Canadian National Railway
• 1958 - CBC held their first cross-country broadcast 
• 1966 - The first color television transmission in Canada occurs in Toronto
• 1972 - The first Gay Pride march takes place in England
• 1979 - The Sony Walkman was introduced to the world
• 1980 - The song, O'Canaada, was named the official national anthem

Vibrant Culture Award for Canada Day Parade Float 2013

The Multicultural Association of Wood Buffalo invites all cultural groups located in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo to register your floats or walking groups for the YMM Canada Day Culture Parade.

ATB has been very gracious to offer a new addition to the awards, an all-new 2013 Vibrant Culture Award. In collaboration with Events Wood Buffalo and Expressionz Canada, the Multicultural Association introduces the newest award category for the 2013 YMM Canada Day parade, the Vibrant Culture Award sponsored by ATB! The Vibrant Culture Award will be given out to the best float in the culture category. Along with a snazzy trophy, all winners will also receive a $500 donation to the non-profit of their choice!

Our partners simply make our game more fun and exciting. “Our theme for this year’s Canada Day Parade is, ‘Make This Place Your Home’. These cultures are what make our region a national treasure and we want to showcase how proud we are to have them here,” says David Whitelock, Executive Director, Events Wood Buffalo.

For all cultural groups, parade registration will be open till June 21, and the registration form can be found online at, www.multiculturefm.org or by calling up The Multicultural Association at 780 791 5186. To be nominated for the ATB Vibrant Culture Award, all groups must be a member of the Multicultural Association.

The 2013 Canada Day Pancake Breakfast on July 1 in partnership with Suncor begins at 8:30 AM at the Boys’ and Girls’ Club on Riedel Street. A multicultural cuisine breakfast will be served until 11AM at the nominal cost of $2.

The YMM Canada Day Culture Parade is a part of the 2013 Legacy Dodge YMM Canada Day Parade which will begin at 11 AM on July 1, 2013. Starting on Riedel Street, the parade will travel along Franklin Avenue and turn off on Morrison Street. Float staging and sign in will take place between 8-10 AM. The Canada Day parade will be followed by the Award ceremony and a picnic in the park hosted by Events Wood Buffalo.

Festivities continue throughout the afternoon and into the evening with barbecues, sports, music and games, finally wrapping up at 11 PM with a spectacular fireworks show.

CanadaROCKS 2013 Line Up

(Fort McMurray, AB May 30, 2013) – The moment everyone has been waiting for is here! Events Wood Buffalo is pleased to announce the 2013 lineup for the two-day Nexen CanadaROCKS concert happening June 30 and July 1. 

Canadian and international sensation, Simple Plan will be the headliner of the paid concert, happening June 30, local artists including the popular band, Friends of Jack, will kick off the first night of tremendous Canadian talent. After the concert, be sure to stick around for the free Syncrude Fireworks Spectacular. Residents who do not attend the CanadaROCKSconcert will still be able to view the fireworks show from the Sandy Point of the Snye. This will be a show you don’t want to miss! 

Alongside the paid concert, there is also a full day of free events taking place on Canada Day, July 1. The free day of events is sponsored by Legacy Dodge and will start off with the Canada Day Parade commencing on Riedel Street, travelling through Franklin Avenue, and ending on Morrison Street. Roving entertainers coordinated by local production company, Eye Flower, under thesupervision of Michael Beamish and Michelle Thorne will be performing throughout the afternoon while activities such as a Teddy Bear Picnic and track-and-field- style games will take place. 

The second day of CanadaROCKS will start in the afternoon and will continue into the evening. Showcased at the second night of music will be many diverse cultural talents including The Carly Rivers Band, Mackenzie Walas, Daniel A. Gillies School of Rock, The Shantelle Davidson Band, Canadian Idol runner-up JayDee Bixby and the Led Zeppelin Show, a Zeppelin Tribute Band. 

“We’ve been working incredibly hard to make this year’s Canada Day a great celebration,” says David Whitelock, Executive Director, Events Wood Buffalo. “Securing a suitable venue has been a bit more of a challenge this year, however we are extremely delighted that the Clearwater School Field has been made available to us as we have executed successful community events at this location in the past. We are in excited to bring world-class Canadian acts to this field and our region for a weekend of music, fun and civic pride.” 

The June 30 paid concert will cost $65, while the July 1 concert is free for the public. Both concerts and all other events besides the Canada Day Parade will take place at the Clearwater School Field on Hardin Street.

Canada Day: A Pancake Celebration

Good Morning Community,

Enclosed find the road map to celebrating Canada Day during the parade procession. The Multicultural Association will take her place in the Parade with a colorful banner held in front by two of our eminent board members followed by the community of the Region. We are proud that you have prepared and will come in your huge numbers to give a true mosaic of multiculturalism. Come as you are with your flag, traditional dress and that is what makes Canada unique and special among nations of the world, a nation of nations.

Make sure you are not delayed by preparation for breakfast for we have breakfast ready for you at seven o'clock at Pond Crescent Park just opposite the Center of Hope along Franklin Avenue. Hot pan cakes with Canadian maple syrup, sausage and a drink of your choice will be served by community volunteers clothed in Multicultural Association and Suncor embossed white T Shirts. It will be fun for the year. Bring children to experience this event.

CanadaROCKS 2012: star-studded lineup!

Award-winning artists to headline CanadaROCKS 2012

Fort McMurray, AB, April 26, 2012 – Events Wood Buffalo in partnership with MacDonald Island Park is proud to present a star-studded lineup for CanadaROCKS 2012, June 29-July 1 at MacDonald Island Park.

“We wanted to assemble a series of talented Canadian artists across a diversity of popular genres, and we believe we’ve achieved that,” said David Whitelock, Executive Director at Events Wood Buffalo. “From members of Canada’s Walk of Fame to CCMA winners to world-renowned hip hop artists, you’ll have it at CanadaROCKS 2012.”

On Canada Day, Blue Rodeo and Corb Lund with very special guests Doc Walker presented by Country 93.3 FM will take the stage for what will be a special performance. An unprecedented five-time Juno Award winner for Group of the Year and 2012 Canadian Music Hall of Fame inductees, Blue Rodeo will be joined by Corb Lund and the Hurtin’ Albertans, who are 11-time Canadian Country Music Award winners.

On Saturday, June 30, hip hop artist, singer-songwriter and four-time Juno Award winner K’naan will perform following hip hop star Classified in a performance presented by Mix 103.7 FM. Perhaps best known for his hit “Wavin’ Flag,” the theme for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, K’naan was recently featured as one of eight artists along with The Edge and Bono of U2 and Lady Gaga at the “Decade of Difference” concert in support of the 10-year anniversary of the Clinton Foundation.

A fireworks display is scheduled to follow Saturday’s lineup as the community rings in Canada’s 144^th birthday.

Six-time Juno Award nominee and indie rock favourite Joel Plaskett Emergency and support will headline a free concert open to the public on Friday, June 29.

“We’re honoured to work in partnership with Events Wood Buffalo as the venue for CanadaROCKS again this year,” said Tim Reid, Chief Operating Officer at MacDonald Island Park. “The potential construction schedule surrounding our proposed outdoor expansion left us with a small window with which to work for outdoor concerts, but we’re more than thrilled to play host to the community as we celebrate our country – and some great music.”  

 

Tickets for CanadaROCKS 2012 will go on sale on Tuesday, May 1 at 10:00 a.m. at canada-rocks.com or at MacDonald Island Park Guest Services, located on thefirst floor of the Suncor Community Leisure Centre. Individual General Admission and Club tickets will be available for both the Saturday and Sunday shows, while weekend ticket passes are also available.

Club tickets will be available on the complimentary opening night to individualsthat have purchased a weekend Club Seating pass.
