Call for Artists for Stony Plain, AB
The Town of Stony Plain Cultural Roundtable is seeking proposals from artists or artist teams to design, develop and paint community mural at the Stony Plain United Church, located at 5012-51 Ave. The selected artist will work with the Cultural Round Table Murals Committee (Committee) and the United Church (Sponsors) in the creation of this free standing mural.
HISTORY OF THE PROGRAM
The Murals Program was initiated in 1990 to tell our story, keep our heritage alive, and revitalize our downtown area. Magnificent outdoor paintings, currently numbering over 30, have been created by artists from across Canada and are located throughout the town. They are an attraction that is ‘always open’ and enrich the lives of our residents and visitors alike. Persons and events depicted in the murals are real, with many of their immediate family members still living in our town. We still have past and present stories to tell with many more coming up in the future! DIMENSIONS 20 ft. long x 8ft. high (160 sq. ft.)
THE MURAL
The mural will depict the life story of Mrs. Cornelia Lucinda Wood (nee Railey), a long-time member of the United Church and one of Stony Plain’s most notable women. The original mural of Mrs. Wood, which was decommissioned when the building it was on was renovated, is not to be recreated in this project, rather reimagined. However, an image of that mural with a dedication to its artist will be placed on the new site by the Town of Stony Plain. Mrs. Wood’s significant life achievements, contribution to the Town of Stony Plain/region and ongoing legacy are to be explored in the mural. Please see the background document for more information on Mrs. Wood’s life and accomplishments.
