2016 CBC Creative Nonfiction Prize is Now Open!

This is it! Your first writing assignment of the New Year! Send your original, unpublished work of creative nonfiction (between 1,200 and 1,500 words) and you could win a $6,000 grand prize, one of four $1,000 runners-up prizes, a 10 day writing residency at The Banff Centre, and more. Where do I belong? How do I belong? Why do I belong? 

When do I belong? Who do I belong to?

For former Governor General Adrienne Clarkson, the question of belonging is at the heart of her 2014 Massey Lectures. Whether you are a new Canadian or a new high school student—no matter who you are, you have a story to tell.

THE CHALLENGE 
Share your personal story about belonging for a chance to win one of two $1,000 prizes from the Canada Council for the Arts (two age categories: 12-18, and 19 and over). Write from the heart about a moment or journey that made you feel like you belonged—or like you didn’t.

• True stories only (no fiction)
• Word count: 400-500 words (not including title)
• One submission per person

2014 Constance Rooke Creative Nonfiction Prize- Deadline Aug. 1, 2014

The Malahat Review, Canada’s premier literary magazine, invites entries from Canadian, American, and overseas authors for its Constance Rooke Creative Nonfiction Prize. One award of $1,000 CAD is given.

The Constance Rooke Creative Nonfiction Prize is awarded to the best work submitted to the magazine’s annual contest for a genre that embraces, but is not limited to, the personal essay, memoir, narrative nonfiction, social commentary, travel writing, historical accounts, and biography, all enhanced by such elements as description, dramatic scenes, dialogue, and characterization. 

Entries may be sent by regular mail or email.


New this year: Pay only $15 for each additional entry after the first.

The deadline for the 2014 Creative Nonfiction Prize is August 1, 2014 (postmark date).

Guidelines:
The entry must be between 2,000 and 3,000 words. Only indicate title and word count on the first page (no names or addresses). Please double space your work.

No restrictions as to subject matter or approach apply. For example, the entry may be personal essay, memoir, cultural criticism, nature writing, or literary journalism. (Read our Creative Nonfiction mandate here; read the Creative Nonfiction Collective's definition of creative nonfiction here.)

Our Annual Lush Triumphant Literary Awards competition is now open for submissions.

FICTION MAXIMUM 3,000 WORDS (no specific theme, we simply want to be amazed!)

POETRY A SUITE OF 5 RELATED POEMS (MAXIMUM 15 PAGES)

CREATIVE NON-FICTION (Based on fact, adorned w/fiction) MAXIMUM 4,000 WORDS

ENTRY FEE: $27.50 PER ENTRY. You may send a cheque or money order along with your submission (cheque/money order made payable to subTerrain Magazine) or submit your entry and payment online at the link below.

You may submit as many entries in as many categories as you like!

The winning entries in each category will receive a $750 cash prize (plus payment for publication) and will be published in our Winter issue. First runner-up in each category will receive a $250 cash prize and be published in our Spring issue of the following year.

All entries MUST be previously unpublished material and not currently under consideration in any other contest or competition. Entries will NOT be returned (so keep a copy for yourself). Results of the competition are posted here in the fall, prior to publication in our Winter issue.
