Centennial Gala and Historic Book Launch

FMPL Hunger Games Month for the Teens

Join us at Teen Book Club on September 2, 2012 as we discuss Suzanne Collin's hit The Hunger Games. Book club copies of Scott Westerfeld's The Uglies will be handed out for October's discussion.

On September 21, 2012 we will be watching the newly released The Hunger Games at Teen Movie Night. Come on down at 6:30 for a free show and snacks!

Teen Social Club will also be doing a Poetry Night on September 7th, 2012.

Big Spirit Festival 2012

Dear Members, Friends and Cooperating Partners,

The Multicultural Association on behalf of Events Wood Buffalo is proud to announce to you the first ever BIG SPIRIT FESTIVAL. This festival celebrates the diversity of our region and will feature the world's greenest carnival featuring 25 amazing rides, all powered by vegetable oil! The festival will also feature FREE live music from multiple Juno Award winners Digging Roots and Kiran Ahluwalia. The festival will run from 31st August - 3rd September 2012 at the Snye.

We are looking for local talent to showcase our culturally diverse region. Please join us in celebrating this event and making it a success by signing up to participant as a performer. Both groups and individuals are welcome. We have 2 hour slots for performances on September 1st and 2nd from 1.00 pm to 3.00 pm to be filled on first come first serve basis.

Party Under the Dome! Celebrate the Centennial of Alberta's Legislature


Celebrate 100 years with special guests Paul Brandt, Big Sugar and Brett Kissel

Countdown to one of the biggest parties of the summer has begun! On September 2, celebrate the 100th birthday of Alberta’s Legislature Building with a double feature, a 1912 Family Fair in the daytime and a Centennial Concert and fireworks spectacular in the evening.

Family Fair 11:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
History buffs take note! The day will begin with a re-enactment of the building’s 1912 opening ceremony, performed by costumed actors on the Legislature’s front steps. The long-awaited time capsule reveal will follow, along with architectural tours of the beloved landmark. Birthday cake will be served of course, as no party is complete without it!

The 1912-inspired fair features a penny carnival, magic shows, stilt walkers, antique cars, roving musicians and ATCO Gas’s “He’s Got the Pipes” centennial variety show. Local artists, including the Running Thunder Dancers, Gateway Quartet, Kayla Patrick, the Keister Family Fiddlers, the NEK Trio, Marie-Josée Ouimet Jazz Quartet will keep everyone entertained from the ATCO Centennial Stage throughout the afternoon.

Brett Kissel
Brett Kissel, a St. Paul native, is a country singer/songwriter who recently toured with George Canyon. Brett remains the youngest ever nominee for a Canadian Country Music Award, having been nominated for a Rising Star award in 2006.

Big Sugar
Big Sugar brings their explosive show to the Alberta Legislature Grounds with their larger-than-life-sized rock and reggae sound! Frontman and fellow Albertan Gordie Johnson returns to Edmonton following their 40-city nationwide tour in support of the latest cd Revolution Per Minute.

Paul Brandt
Calgary-born, internationally acclaimed country star and local favourite Paul Brandt will be the final act!  Paul recently headlined the Calgary Stampede and is the most awarded male Canadian country music artist in history.

A spectacular fireworks display launched from the Legislature grounds will be the evening’s grand finale! This family-friendly, unlicensed concert will take place on the south lawn of the Legislature grounds.  Guests are encouraged to bring their own seating and parking is limited so transit is recommended.

Festival City Winds Announce Auditions for the 2012-2013 Season

Edmonton, Alberta

Festival City Winds (Adult Concert Bands), under the direction of Artistic Director Wendy Grasdahl, is pleased to announce auditions for its 18th Season. Auditions will take place on Thursday, August 30 (6:00-9:00PM), Friday, August 31 (5:30-9:00PM) & Saturday, September 1 (2:00-5:00PM), 2012 at the studio of Wendy Grasdahl.

Festival City Winds have opportunities for members in the following concert bands:

  • Novice Band (performs band music at level 1-2) – conducted by Dr. Eila Peterson, PhD (Northwestern) – Rehearsals are Tuesday evenings from 7:30-10:00 PM at First Presbyterian Church (10025 105 Street NW)

Sand Silo Mural Public Art Program Unveiling


Today at 10:00 a.m. there was an unveiling for the Sand Silo Mural Public Art Project at the Syncrude   Timberlea Athletic Park.  The mural was created by Larry Hunter who is an artist from British Columbia.  

Larry has worked as a freelance artist/designer for thirty years.  He enjoys large and small-scale public art works and has painted over twenty murals in  British Columbia , Alberta, and Ontario.  To learn more about Larry and his artwork, please visit his website at: www.larryhunterart.com.

Festivals and Events Tourism Growth Program: Sept 21 Application Deadline

Alberta Tourism, Parks and Recreation is inviting organizations to submit applications to the Festivals and Events Tourism Growth Program. The upcoming application deadline is September 21, 2012.

The program aims to assist festivals and events in Alberta reach their tourism potential. The program makes available grant funding of $25,000 to $40,000. Funding is used to work with a third party-consultant to evaluate an organization’s festival or event, identify tourism growth opportunities, and set clear steps towards growing the visitor experience and increasing visitation and revenue.

Eligible organizations include not-for profit organizations, municipalities, and First Nations or Métis governments. The program is most appropriate for festivals and events that attract regional, provincial, national or international visitors, and have an annual audience of at least 1500, of which a minimum 25% are out of town visitors.

Events Wood Buffalo Seeking Volunteers for BigSpirit Sustainival

The time has come to celebrate our BigSpirit! Events Wood Buffalo is showing our love for our community with four days of Sustainival carnival rides, and two concerts the weekend of August 31st to September 3rd. Sustainival gives you the chance to ride amusement park rides, all powered by vegetable oil, for the first time in North American history. The Carnival will run all four days, and concerts take place September 1st and 2nd.

For Sustainival we will require five volunteers at all times from 12pm-12am (shifts can be as long/short as you would like, let me know what your availability is!), on Sept 1st and 2nd, we require two people from 12pm-6pm for general assistance, and for the concerts (Sept 1st and 2nd) we will require two volunteers each night from 6pm-12am (at the latest!). I would prefer to have people who can commit to the entire six hours for that position! Duties will be determined by the supervisor of the area to which you are assigned.

This is our last event for the Summer, and we hope to see you there!

Alberta Museums Association Conference


 


There are many things within the museum sector that we do not talk about, and many that we have talked about for years, but have taken little action on. Challenges in museum management and operations — such as financial stability, succession management, deaccessioning, storage and space issues, and dissolution and closure — are often considered too contentious to discuss. There are also the stories that museums do not tell; the artifacts that museums do not display; the multiple viewpoints that are not shared; and the questions asked by the public that museums do not know how to answer. It is about time we face our fears and challenge our perspectives to be courageous leaders capable of making real change in our museums and our communities.

The 2012 AMA Conference will be a catalyst for original research that will bolster the knowledge and skills available to museums in all stages of organizational life as they confront sustainability challenges and start having those crucial conversations that keep our organizations nimble and vital.

Wood Buffalo Country Fair 2012 - Cancelled


The September long weekend will be filled with Country Fair, farmers markets and corn maze activities, please come and join us. The Wood Buffalo Country Fair. a unique local event that showcases the artistic, culinary, artisanal, and horticultural talent and tradition in the Wood Buffalo region. This is an all ages free event in association with Dunvegan Gardens.

With a number of categories for submission, there is something for every age and interest.

Acceptance of arts and crafts: Sunday August 26 2-9pm, Monday August 27 2-9 pm
Acceptance of culinary and horticulture: Friday August 31st from 3-7pm

Times of the event:
Saturday September 1, 10am-5pm,

September 2, noon-5pm,
September 3, 10am-3pm

Entry pickup- September 3 from 4pm-6pm
Chili Cook off – September 2 starting at 1pm
Entries will be accepted at Dunvegan Gardens

Athabasca University offers Heritage Courses


Courses for Heritage Professionals at Athabasca University


Whether you're an aspiring, emerging, or established heritage professional, or a volunteer or amateur history enthusiast, the Heritage Resources Management (HRM) program at Athabasca University has a course for you. There are currently 13 distance-based classes open for registration, ranging from the introductory undergraduate level up to advanced graduate studies, offered either in an undergraduate University Certificate in HRM or a graduate Post Baccalaureate Diploma in HRM.
Two courses are offered in paced format in a conventional September-to-December semester. Both are graduate courses.

HERM 501: Issues in Heritage Resources Management
HERM 542: Issues in Planning Historic Places

The graduate courses HERM 512, (Advanced Methods in Heritage Research) and the final project practicum course, HERM 691, are offered as individualized study courses on continuous offer.

They also have 9 undergrad courses, including ones on preventative conservation, collections, heritage policy, and interpretive programming, among others. These courses are offered continuously, with start dates on the first day of each month.  www.heritage.resources.athabasca.ca

Attention Alberta Artists! Upcoming AFA Individual Artists Project Grant Deadline!

The AFA’s latest deadline for applications for the AFA Individual Artists Project Grant program is September 1, 2012! 

The Individual Artists Project Grant program supports the development of individual Alberta artists Traditional Aboriginal artists, arts administrators, and artist ensembles by providing a grant for a specific project.  
Grants are available for;  
  • Aboriginal Traditional Arts
  • Art Acquisition 
  • Cultural Relations (the deadline for this category is ongoing)
  • Dance
  • File and Video Arts
  • Literary Arts
  • Music
  • Theatre and performing Arts
  • Visual and New Media

Get Up and Go Wood Buffalo 2012 Volunteers Needed!


Get involved in our Non-Profit Fundraising

Eligible non-profits can apply to volunteer the day of Get Up and Go Wood Buffalo to receive an honorarium towards your organization.

There will be a minimum number of 3 volunteers required per organization for the day of, and all volunteers must represent a registered non-profit organization to be awarded funds. You can have family and friends included as representatives in your group. All funds raised will be divided PER-INDIVIDUAL-PER-HOUR of volunteer service.

Please send back the application form no later than Aug 16, 2012.
